CEO SPEAKS …………..
Dear Programme Managers,
One more eventful year bids adieu. ASAP, in its scale of operations
increased its reach and strength in 2016. Introduction of session wise
Quality Framework through MIS, delayed but successful SSS 2016,
commencement of construction of Community Skill Parks, recruiting more
Programme managers, Trainers Academy, Government’s sanction for
delegation of powers, reorganising the programme managers etc. were some of the milestones of
our organisation in the last year. Special mention is needed for the exercise of reorganising the
existing programme managers, with the creation of new eight roles at the apex level. Each new
incumbent in every other role – new DPMs, new sector PMs, new division PMs - brought new
action and thought in their respective job roles, whereby organisation as a whole underwent a
positive transformation.
In the coming year, we will have increased responsibilities, mid-term review of the
programme by ADB, operationalizing Community Skill Parks, starting talent labs in schools as part
of the declared mission programme of Education Department etc. Completion of all Skill classes of
2015-16 & assessments including the APTIS and commencing all Skill batches of 2016-17 as early as
possible, not later by April first week, will be the core responsibilities on all of us. ASAP should also
be able to take up new additional responsibilities entrusted by the State.
As a whole, Programme Managers kept the energy and passion levels high, ensuring the
high quality of delivery of skill training. I thank each one of my team mates – ASAP Core team
members, Programme Managers and Programme Executives and all others supporting the pro-
gramme – for putting their best efforts to keep the programme in its high velocity trajectory to
attain ambitious targets. Without your contribution and support, ASAP could not have become
what it is now.
We shall continue to work as a team. We shall keep our efforts to improve the quality of Skill
training, to introduce better changes in Schools and Colleges and to streamline the governance
protocols within the organisation. All this will bring positive changes, not only in the spaces we
work, but also in the ecosystems, of which we all are part of. Let us complete the preparatory works
in January and February, consolidate all our gains before next SSS and look for a full throttle go
ahead for skill batches of 2016-17.
I wish each one of you and your dear ones a happy, prosperous and blessed
year ahead.

THE ASAP BEEHIVE
Thousand Splendid Stars ………………………….. Dr.K.P.Jaikiran
Head, Curriculum Design ASAP & Programme Director FLAIR
Summer is the time when bees go around gathering maximum nectar to raise their honey stock
for the winter months. The ASAP honey comb too buzzed with activity during the summer of 2013
with the team members going out to gather talent for its skill training of the coming years. And it
turned out to be one of the greatest team building exercises ever seen by ASAP. The honey comb
was at its best during the Summer of 2013.
Logistics of training was one of the greatest challenges faced during the early days. Significant
among them was finding and equipping enough Communicative English Trainers who can
facilitate ASAP classes in schools and colleges. Though an initial number of them could be sourced
from the open market through a formal recruitment process, the rising demand for more numbers
in the coming years of growth worried ASAP. Every problem has in it a solution, if not many, is
what the team has found through its regular brainstorming evening meetings in
Dr. K.M.Abraham’s (then Principal Secretary, Higher Education, Govt. of Kerala) office in the
Secretariat Annex.

Team Meetings of ASAP, a recharging experience for everyone after tiring days work, found
answers to every problem even if it meant sitting late into the night when everyone else would be
readying their beds for a comfortable sleep. The challenge of finding enough trainers to train
students across the state was only a small issue for the team that gathered one evening around
Dr. Abraham, a person who always dived deep into the depths of issues looking for possible
solutions. Out-of-the- box thinking was a norm, rather than an exception, and this gave rise to the
idea of creating trainers out of College students having potential and holding promise.
The idea behind TSS was to generate interest among the students in the programme through an
exciting campaign that involved a campaign vehicle to go into the 190 colleges across the state with
Radio Jockeys for awareness programmes laced with fun and activities. The road show cum
recruitment campaign for Skill Development Executives saw great team building both in ASAP
Headquarters and the field. Team work was evident at every stage of the campaign and there was
perfect harmony between members in executing every stage of the event. The fact that TSS
originated from one room and happened across the length and breadth of the state moving men,
materials and machinery was proof of the fact that team work could create wonders in organization-
al planning. The task of designing a campaign went to the right person, Shri. M. Vivekanandan Nair,
who wasted no time in carving out a plan. He then came up with a proposal for taking the idea to
the Colleges across the State using a strategy to attract young talents. “Travels in my small car with
Riyas, an expert in strategizing, gave shape to the nascent idea and it was he who suggested the
name Thousand Splendid Stars (TSS), a movement to find thousand potential trainers from the
campuses of Kerala”, says Shri. Vivekanandan when quizzed about the birth of the campaign. “I used
all available resources and media contacts for giving shape to this exercise, an attempt to drive
straight into the hearts of the teenagers studying in Colleges. Initially there was some resistance in
the team when I spoke about using Radio Jockeys to create a fun element in the campaign”, was his
next response.
Sending RJs into campuses for generating interest in ASAP among students was a challenge
indeed and we took every care to see that things happened the way we planned. A three day
training for the road show teams to prepare them for the ASAP campaign was also organized. Two
decorated buses for road show and the RJ teams entered the ASAP campus for a dress rehearsal
before being flagged off from the Secretariat to fan out into different parts of the state. The two
campaign vehicles and RJ teams started from Thiruvananthapuram and Kasargode respectively and
finally converged at the CMS College, Kottayam in a grand finale event” said Shri. Vivekanandan
Nair about the campaign.

The first generation Programme Managers who joined ASAP from the VHSE Schools during initial
days moved heaven and earth in the field during the summer to lubricate the administrative
machinery of Schools and Colleges to make TSS happen in field. In fact it was their sweat that
resulted in a wonderful campaign in the state. And when the campaign vehicle travelled from
campus to campus, it left behind a trail of hope and opportunities in young minds. The campaign
opened doors to a professional life in training field and students took little time to grab the
opportunity. They lined up for the recruitment campaign and the team had a tough time filtering the
best from the good. Team members also spread out to different parts of the State to join the TSS
campaign and keep the spirit alive. There was great energy and passion as the idea of ASAP seeped
into the institutional and individual minds. Students selected during the campaign were placed in 21
day grooming sessions and further selection processes.
TSS 2013 laid the foundation for the ASAP programme in the State and generated great team spirit
among the team members. The art of crisis management was also tried for the first time in ASAP
when there was a cascade of events across the state that threw problems every now and then. No
one knew when he/she would be asked to move out to address an issue in the field and every one
kept moving from place to place to respond to situations. The seeds sown by TSS set the stage for
the taking off of the Programme in Schools and Colleges. Educational institutions in the nook and
corner of the state understood ASAP and its goals. TSS thus played a key role in the early growth
and evolution of the programme. It was also the first formal activity of the Communication Division
that was slowly taking shape.

THOUGHT WAVES
De facto metamorphosis By Minnu P Raveendran ( SDE)
“We delight in the beauty of a butterfly, but rarely admit the changes it has gone through to
achieve that beauty”– Maya Angelou
It’s been more than three years I have been working as an
SDE of ASAP, when I reminisce myself there is a great diversifi-
cation which I can realise. It was my first working day in ASAP in
a very prestigious secondary school. I was rather nervous. I was
young and looked childish. So many students pushed me in the
corridor mistaking me as another student. I tried to look serious.
Checked my dress, hair and bravely entered into the classroom.
Every young charming faces stood up staring at me, trying to
guess what kind of a trainer I’m. I remember how well I was pre-
pared for my session, a good plan, an interesting introduction…..I was full of energy and hope, I
greeted them and started asking them typical questions.
There I saw discrepant behaviour from the students….. Some one answered, some were so scary,
some were engaged in other works, few were listening to me, some looking here and there like
as they don’t belong to this class room….it was all actually a discerning of myself that each stu-
dent needs special care which differs from person to person depending on their calibre. There I
realised a reconstruction in me from a student to a trainer.
It is a common sense reality that a conventional classroom must move forward in transforming
student and learning supports. Yet, it has taken some time for major efforts to emerge. In the
meantime, peripheral and interior barricade to learning and teaching have continued to pose
pervasive and entrenched remonstrance to young learners across. Failure to directly consign
these barriers ensures that (a) too many children and youth will continue to struggle in school,
and (b) trainers will continue to divert precious instructional time to dealing with behaviour and
other problems that can interfere with classroom engagement for all students. It is not regarding
perfection rather it is about effort we take. And when you bring that effort every single day that is
where the real remodelling happens, that’s how change occurred in my classroom. It will take
time, it will require dedication, it will require will power, and it requires sacrifice.

It was these small changes that build up over time that help cultivating a self – image and self-
esteem among them. By engaging their minds in class, they’ll develop more solid, integrated, useful
understanding of concepts. By providing them frequent feedbacks on limitations of their knowledge
will take a charge on their learning, they will automatically start seeking information and experiences
they need to progress.
We must be the lifelong learners and we need to transform our students as lifelong learners. It was
rather challenging but embracing all the challenges and taking it as an opportunity we moved
further.
NEVER SAY NEVER AGAIN -Anjana S
SDE “A teacher affects eternity. No one can tell where his influence stops”-Henry Adams
Being a teacher is a rare privilege. A privilege synonymous with responsibility, obligation
and commitment. You are being looked upon and you behold within you the fortune to inspire. You
possess the power and potential to change the world. You can’t afford to take the position lightly
because the impact a teacher has on his/her students are enormous and it knew no leaps and
bounds. Apart from inculcating education and moral values the pivotal role of a teacher is to en-
courage the students to find themselves. After all realising one’s true ability and potential is the
greatest discovery ever. Mark Von Doren rightly observes: “The art of teaching is the art of assisting
discovery”.
A teacher is expected to play a positive role in moulding the character of a student. Teach-
er (guru) is a person who possesses the power to disperse the darkness within a student. A teacher
should be able to annihilate the darkness cast upon by ignorance and should endow the light of
knowledge and wisdom. Knowledge never diminishes or tails off when shared or imparted, less it
magnifies in clarity and conviction, benefitting the patron and the receiver alike.
Children are like free radicals. Full of vibrancy, enthusiasm, curiosity and pulsating with
free will and spirit. Today majority of educational institutions rampantly follow the tenet of re-
striction and constraint. Innovation and curiosity are strangled by regulations, requirements and nu-
merous other boundaries. How can you expect the students to thrive in a system hell-bent on
standardisation? Students should be given wings to pursue their dreams and aspirations. It is indeed
a herculean and phenomenal task. But not unattainable. Because there is nothing in this world pow-
erful than a positive push. A smile. A world of optimism and hope. A ‘you can do it’ when things are
tough.
The Nobel Laureate Malala Yousafzai is quite right when she observes: "One child, one
teacher, one book, one pen can change the world”.

REFLECTIONS
ENGLISH FAMILY
Sumija SS ( Iqbal College)
My dear friends, I am going to introduce you all with an English family. The dignified gentle-
man, NOUN is the head of the family. Like every English gentleman, he is accompanied by his
wife. She is always there whenever he needs her, and her name is VERB. The couple has several
children.
Their daughter ADJECTIVE favours her father and always stays close to him. The youngest son,
ADVERB is the inevitable mama’s pet. But the eldest son, PRONOUN is a very responsible fellow.
He often takes his father’s place when Mr. NOUN is very busy elsewhere. PREPOSITION is their
maid, who stays with them, cares for them and maintains good relationship among all members
of his family. They also have a dear friend CONJUNCTION. He visits them and joints the family in
all their adjectives. Finally they have cranky uncle INTERJECTION. He is very emotional and sen-
sitive and he can speak in exclamations only. And all of them live very happily in a house called
SPEECH.

Towards safer work places – Importance of Internal Complaints Committee
Preetha A
Women are increasingly faced with the pressing question as to how they should deal with
harassment in the workplace. It's a story we've heard many times, of a woman being bothered by
the persistent interest that a male colleague (sometimes even the boss) is taking in her.
He may be direct about his intentions, passing lewd comments, issuing invites for dinner or coffee
or flooding her with text messages, Or he may bother her in other ways, touching her 'accidentally'
or setting up situations in which she is left alone with him, and so on.
Either way, she is left feeling helpless and angry. Con-
fronting the perpetrator of this harassment may result in
job loss, and not doing anything about it means a daily
struggle of fending him off.
WHAT YOU CAN DO?
Every woman in the workplace needs to equip herself with
information about what she can do if she is being
harassed.
How to Deal with Sexual Harassment at Work ?
1. Communicate your disapproval
If you can avoid the colleague who makes you uncomfortable, do so. If you have to work in close
proximity to him, avoid being alone with him.
And tell him to stop his specific behaviour: If he stands too close, you can say: Can you stand away
please, because such closeness makes me very uncomfortable.
Or, if he touches you, say: Can you please avoid putting your hand on my shoulder because that
makes me uncomfortable. 'If the person has sent you a joke through an email or SMS, reply through

2. Keep a record
If your colleague isn't getting the message, prepare to report him. Gather evidence to substantiate
your claims. 'Note down the date, time and details of each incident,' Save any emails or text
messages that contain inappropriate language.
Try to use your mobile phone recorder to discreetly record his remarks.
3. Find a confidante
Share the situation with a colleague you trust in the office. She may be able to keep a watchful eye
on the situation.
But be picky about who you share this information with, and ensure that your confidante is trust-
worthy. A senior colleague or mentor who carries more weight in the organisation would be ideal.
4. Formal complaint
If the above doesn't work, make a formal complaint to (Internal
Complaints Committee) senior members of the organisation, with
whatever evidence or notes you have.
Make the complaint in writing and keep a copy remember an oral
complaint can be hushed up.
5. External resources
If your company doesn't take any action on your complaint or doesn't penalise the miscreant, you
can approach the Local Complaints committee – Usually District Collectorate have an office and also
you can approach Women’s commission, they have a special cell for redressal of such cases. They
can approach the company on your behalf in an effort to force it to take action 'Employers need to
have a clear and written policy that sexual harassment is misconduct and will result in dismissal.

Smart Tips for you
WORKING WITH LAPTOP & WINDOWS 10
The following tips about endless clicking to minimise screens would help you
to perform hassle free working
Okay, so this isn't the biggest problem to hit Windows 10 users by any means, but neverthe-
less it's a worthwhile tip to keep in mind. When you've got a lot of programs open, minimising
them all to get back to the desktop can be quite a chore when you have to click the little 'line'
icon top-right again, and again, and again.
In fact, there's a keyboard shortcut which will minimise all active windows in one fell swoop.
Simply hit the Windows key+D and you'll be back at the desktop in a jiffy. Getting into this habit
saves a lot of time over the long run
Protecting the LCD display monitor
When you close the lid of your laptop, make sure there are no items, such as a pencil, books
or small ear-phones, on the keyboard. These can damage the display screen. Close the lid gently
and holding it in the middle. Closing the lid using only one side causes pressure on that hinge,
and over time can cause it to bend and snap.
Hold and lift the computer by its base, not by its LCD display (the screen).
If you lift the Laptop by the screen alone, you could damage the display or the hinges at-
taching the display to the base. The display is also easily scratched or damaged by direct pres-
sure – take care not to place pressure on it.

Eisenhower Matrix By Aneesh P
We all have the same 24 hours in a day, most of us complain that time is not sufficient, but still
some people have adequate time to do all activities that they need to do in their work life and
personal life, how is this possible? I am sure that most of us have this doubt in our mind. It would
be good to read about “The Eisenhower Matrix”
Former U.S. President Dwight D. Eisenhower once said: "I have two kinds of problems: the urgent
and the important. The urgent are not important, and the important are never urgent." This
"Eisenhower Principle" is said to have helped him in organizing his workload and priorities. This
principle can be applied in our personal lives too.
