Projekt-Consult’s training services address all levels of the mining sector

in a holistic approach that converts mining into a professional, prosper-

ous and profitable business. The company has more than 30 years of

professional experience and knowhow in the extractive industry from

over 50 countries and a variety of stakeholders such as ministries of min-

ing, geological surveys, mining companies and local mining associations.

Challenges Many developing and emerging countries heavily depend on extractive

industries. The countries’ educational systems often do not offer an ad-

equate framework for mining-related vocational training. Lack of skills and

short-sighted exploitation are causing a variety of technical and environ-

mental, health, safety and socio-political problems. The improper use and

disposal of chemical reagents such as mercury or cyanide required for min-

eral processing often pollute the environment near mine sites and along

the drainage of local rivers. None or insufficient timbering of underground

mines expose miners to the risk of death or serious accidents. Limited mine

management skills lead to exploitation of non-renewable resources with-

out generat-ing social and economic rents. Miners, their families and local

communities must bear the consequences which often negatively affect

their living conditions and livelihood.

In addition to artisanal and small-scale miners, mine owners and gov-

ernmental authorities need advanced mining and management skills in

order to develop solid and responsible business strategies in the long run.

Skills development for mining and applied geosciences

Due to the shortage of local experts they often depend on international

know-how and foreign investors. But the latter do not necessarily have

the sustainable improvement of rural communities in mind where mining

often takes place. Instead, limited understanding of the mining sector and

its required technical skills commonly results in weak and fragmentary

mineral governance in general.

Projekt-Consult’s ability to combine local training concepts with inter-

national mining expertise and long-lasting implementing experience is

highly appreciated by clients all over the world. Our advanced trainings

are not limited to environmental and social issues but comprise specific

technical and mine management support at numerous business levels.

We focus on assisting partners and clients in the establishment of

high-quality training services on the best practices in the mining sector.

Our target groups are artisanal and small-scale miners, mine owners

and managers, trainers as well as personnel of national, regional and

local authorities. Over the years, training interventions have focused on

various precious and strategic commodities such as gold, silver, 3T min-

erals, diamonds, colored gemstones, salt, industrial minerals and coal.

Training contents and scope strongly depend on the individual level of the

target groups’ entry skills. Therefore, Projekt-Consult designs its training

services in a demand-oriented way and based on a thorough training needs

assessment. Taking target groups’ heterogeneity in terms of social and

educational backgrounds as well as time frames into consideration, we

offer comprehensive concepts such as training-on-the-job, classroom-based

courses, on-site coaching, training of trainers and stag-gered follow-up

courses.

Our training interventions comprise a scope of services that has been

refined continuously and includes the following tailor-made deliverables:

As to counteract these trends, local human capacity development (HCD)

and support for local stakeholders and authorities need to be fostered.

Improving academic, tech-nical and vocational training is a major suc-

cess factor of a comprehensive and sustainable HCD strategy. In order

to enhance the capacity and efficiency of the national mining sectors of

developing and emerging countries, the respective educational systems

should be capable of intrinsically generating experts and extending the

latter’s vocational training.

Concept and servicesCapacity building, skills development and knowledge transfer play an

essential role in Projekt-Consult’s implementation concepts either as an

activity for a specific target group or as a side event for partners, project

stakeholders or local staff. We believe that open access to information

and knowledge sharing can translate the exploitation of nonrenewable

resources into human and social development in mining areas.

Our holistic training approaches build on long-standing success in project

implementation, and capitalize on a vast pool of experienced technical

In 2014, Projekt-Consult has become a member of GFA Consulting Group

– one of Europe’s leading development consultancies. The strategic merg-

er has offered an opportunity to create synergies from combining Projekt-

Consult´s outstanding sector expertise with GFA’s C3 training based on

modern adult learning principles .

C3, or Creation of Competence for Competition, is a training methodology

which has been developed by GFA over the last 20 years, and is based on

project experiences around the world. C³´s training methodology stimu-

lates active learning by encouraging the exchange of experience among

participants (www.c3-training.de). It also aims at the direct application

and transfer of newly acquired knowledge and skills to learners’ working

environment.

Mining training centerPapua New Guinea, EU, 2007 – 2012The project focused on the establishment and sustained operation of

a training center for the artisanal and small-scale mining sector in the

country. It involved the development of curricula and didactic materials,

training of trainers and support of training course delivery at the training

center. The project thus contributed to creating a basis for sustainable

small-scale mining, i.e. improving the utilization of natural resources

while minimizing environmental degradation for the benefit of small-

scale miners, their extended families and the local economy.

Sustainable economic developmentAfghanistan, GIZ, 2011 – 2014The overall objective was to improve the competitiveness of the private sec-

tor and its employment opportunities. This gender-sensitive project focused

on increasing local value added for semi-precious stones in quarrying, pro-

cessing, and marketing. This goal has been achieved by setting up training

centers for the processing of semi-precious stones in all project provinces.

GFA’s C3 training, CEFE training of trainers and extra-occupational coaching

have enlarged the competences of business development services by pro-

moting the exchange of networking activities of value chain stakeholders

and service providers.

Contract value: € 3,280,000

Business planning of mineral producers Rwanda, BGR, 2015 The intervention encompassed a systematic assessment of the mine man-

agement and business planning capacity of selected small-scale mineral

producers in Rwanda. The Rwandan mining authorities and association,

and other relevant national stakeholders have been consulted and involved

in identifying and recruiting suitable national companies and individuals.

This has established a pool of experts with advanced practical knowl-

edge of and experience in mine management and business planning who

can act as trainers or coaches for smaller companies and cooperatives.

Contract value: € 50,000

Support to Small-Scale Mining: Rural development in the former mining centers in the Bolivian highland, Bolivia, EU 2004 – 2010

Within the framework of this GFA’s project a comprehensive feasibility

study was carried out which focused on the establishment and institution-

alization of a mining school for the vocational training of miners from the

cooperative, private and state-owned mining sectors. The scope of work

included advisory services to a national multidisciplinary team, studying the

political, institutional, legal, organizational, technical, social and economic

framework for setting up the mining school and establishing the linkage to

the Bolivian education system. In a second step, the educational, admin-

istrative and legal aspects for sustaining the recently established mining

school in Oruro were assessed.
