1. Scheduling & Prioritizing
• We often think we can do much more than we are
actually capable of in a certain amount of time. This is
known as the planning fallacy.
• Besides academics, you should also nurture your
physical, mental, and social wellness. This can
include exercising, eating nutritious meals, engaging in
self-care, and staying in touch with friends and family.
**Key to Success: The best way to stay on top is to
prioritize tasks and responsibilities.**

Agendas & Planners
• Agendas and planners can
be helpful tools to help you
get organized.
• If you prefer to use your
phone, download an app or
use your UWin email
calender to say on top of
your tasks.

Master Task List
• Take your course outlines as a
starting point to create a master plan
for your semester.
• From there, you can break it down
into monthly, weekly, and daily to do
lists.
• Visit www.uwindsor.ca/steps, click on
Free Resources, choose ‘Semester
Schedule Excel Template’ to print a
copy of the master task list.

1. Scheduling & PrioritizingCreating a Semester Schedule
• Remember to add designated slots to complete
readings, assignments, test review, and other
activities.
• It helps to allocate specific time slots in which to
complete tasks. By assessing how long each task will
take, you are less likely to overestimate how much you
can realistically accomplish, and you will be less likely
to experience procrastination and feeling guilty about
unfinished tasks.
• When assigning time slots for your tasks, remember to
tackle important tasks when your energy is high.

Study Breaks
• You should aim to take regular
breaks during the week – for leisure
time and meals, as well as short
five-minute breaks every
30-60 minutes while you are working on completing your
tasks.
• Those short and frequent breaks are a good way to
refresh and keep going – rather than get frustrated or
tired and put off your incomplete task.

1. Scheduling & Prioritizing
• Example of a weekly student schedule
Reflect: Could the student have improved their Wednesday schedule?
Did the student leave anything out of their week?

2. Goal Setting
• Goals can help you prioritize and
accomplish both small and big tasks.
• Additionally, a well-articulated goal can
offer you a plan of action to reach the
desired outcome.
• By outlining the steps that go into
accomplishing your goal, you are more
aware of the effort you will have to put
in.

2. Goal SettingGenerally, S.M.A.R.T. Goals should be:
– Specific - Do you know exactly what you want to
accomplish with all the details?
– Measurable - Are you able to assess your
progress?
– Attainable/Action-Oriented - Is your goal
within your reach given your current situation?
– Relevant - Is your goal relevant towards your
purpose in life?
– Time-bound - What is the deadline for
completing your goal?
• S.M.A.R.T. is an acronym to help you
remember this tool.

2. Goal Setting
• After this module, take the time to write down your goals for
the semester: grades you want for each course.
• It will help you make the right decisions throughout the
semester. Keep in mind these goals and be proactive to
achieve them
• Having set your goals, you will find it easier to say no to
additional tasks and responsibilities that can distract you from
accomplishing your goals.
• For instance, when deciding between two volunteer
opportunities, you may settle on the one that adds to or lines
up most closely with your goal achievement.

3. Procrastination
• This can be a deal breaker for planning and
prioritizing.
• Setting goals and marking down study time slots in
your agenda can help you keep your bad habits in
check, but it is equally important to understand the
cause of your procrastination behaviours.

3. Procrastination
• Often we decide to do
something that seems to be
more appealing, but
unfortunately we can come
up with enough of those
activities to come
dangerously close to our
deadlines.

3. Procrastination
Recognize when you are procrastinating
• On average, we waste about two hours each day.
• Where do your two hours go?
• Some of the most popular
procrastination activities
include napping, watching
Netflix, and browsing social media.

3. Procrastination

Understand why you are procrastinating
To tackle procrastination, it is important to understand
why it is happening.
• Are you bored or exhausted?
• Is this task overwhelming and you think that you are
going to fail?
• Did you put too many tasks on your to-do list?
• Is there anything else happening in your personal life
that is keeping you from completing your task?
3. Procrastination
Intervene and be proactive!
• Choosing temporary “wants” over things you should do
can lead to over-commitment and feelings of guilt.
• Try to find strategies that help you overcome your go-to
procrastination activities.
• For instance, if you are browsing social media instead of
attempting an overwhelming task, it may be best to put
away your phone or disable your internet connection and
to seek out support from a peer, TA/GA, or your
instructor.
