On Saturday January 18 we had some parents and friends attend our working bee here at school.

It was a boiling hot day and we appreciated the efforts that you went to in order to tidy the

gardens and mow the lawns before the children returned to school. A big thank you to Michelle

Frazer for coordinating this event and providing morning tea for the workers. We had

many helpers on the day and I would personally like to thank Michelle, Stephen, Brandon,

Ashleigh, John B, John S, Pat, Joel, Rachel, Harry and the Duexberry family for giving up

their time.

Breakfast Meet and Greet

On Friday 7 February we welcomed many new families to Chertsey Primary School at our ‘Meet

and Greet’ breakfast. It was lovely to meet so many parents at this event. Thank you for your

time and visiting our school and meeting your child’s teacher for the year.

Roosters Visit

On Friday 14 February we welcomed 2 Sydney City Roosters players to our school to deliver an

anti-bullying program to our year 4,5 and 6 students. The children were very excited and the

presentation on anti-bullying was very worthwhile. They left us with some videos on how to

deal with bullying and a signed football by the whole team. We will be raffling this ball off

at a later stage in the year at one of our fund raisers.

Junkyard Orchestra

2/3B have been selected to be a part of the Junkyard Orchestra School Challenge this year

and all children involved will be receiving regular updates as to what they have to do in order to

complete this challenge. Thank you to the parents who have already returned the photography

waiver note and brought in recyclable materials.

AECG Meet and Greet

Tjudibaring Aboriginal Education Consultative Group has kindly invited the staff, parents and

the students of Chertsey Primary School to be a part of organisation. Meetings are very informal

and discussions occur about community events, guest speakers and most importantly decisions

are made regarding the education of Aboriginal children.

If you would like to come along to this meeting, the first for the year will be held at Kincumber

High School on Wednesday March 12 starting at 6pm. Refreshments will be provided and all are welcome.

Swimming Carnival

Don’t forget it is our Twilight Swimming carnival this Wednesday afternoon and I am looking forward to my first here at

Chertsey Primary School. Hopefully the weather will be kind to us. If there are any changes to the carnival we will send a note

home with the children involved on Wednesday afternoon.

Late Arrivals

Many children have been arriving late to school for reasons such as sleeping in. Please make sure your child is up and ready

to start their day at school by 9am. Children who arrive late to class miss out on morning routines, reading groups and other

very important information. It is also very disruptive for the class teacher and the students in the class. If you have had to attend

an appointment during school hours please sign in and out of school at the front office.

School Photos

The school photos for this year have been booked in for February 25. Please keep an eye out for your child’s envelop. Please

do not send envelop or the money back prior to this day. On photo day each child will need this envelop with money inside

if you wish to purchase a set of photos for 2014. Please make sure that all children have the correct Summer school uniform

on.

Parking Before and After School Hours

I would like to just remind everyone to NOT park across driveways or in bus zones around our school. Many residents

have complained that their driveways have been blocked by parents picking up their children.

High School Enrolment Forms

Last week every child in year 6 was given an expression of interest for high school. This form MUST be returned to school

as soon as possible indicating whether you would like your child to attend their local high school or you would like to apply

for an out of zone place. Thank you to all of the children who have already returned these forms to their class teacher

P&C Meeting

The first P&C meeting for the year was held on Tuesday 11 February. Thank you to the parents for supporting our P&C and a

big welcome to all of the new parents. The next P&C meeting will be held on March 11 and we would love to see more

families at this if you have a couple of hours a month to spare.

PREMIER’S READING CHALLENGE

The school has registered to take part in the Premier’s Reading Challenge for 2014. This is a reading scheme promoted by the

Department of Education. It is not compulsory but it is an opportunity for you to support and encourage your child’s/children’s

love of books and learning. It is a school program offered to all students and is recorded on the school report. For Years K-2 30

books must be read from a set list. These books can be read by students, read by you to the student or can be read in class or

library. For Years 3-6 15 books must be read from a set list and 5 other books of similar difficulty. Students have until

September to complete the ‘challenge’ and will receive a Premier’s Certificate for having taken part. All students entering the

Premier’s Reading Challenge will receive a PRC certificate and appear in the PRC Honour Roll. Books are available in our

school library and community libraries. For the complete list of books log on to -

http//www.schoolsnsw.edu/premier’sreadingchallenge/

For children in Years 2-6 the books read for the Premier’s Reading Challenge can also be included as books read for the

Chertsey 100 Reading Challenge..

SCHOOL VOLUNTARY

CONTRIBUTIONS We are currently seeking your help with payment of your voluntary contributions. ALL funds collected

go directly to our school library for the purchase of new books for the children. This is the only income

for the library so we would encourage you wherever possible to make this contribution to our school.

A raffle will be held at the end of term 1 for all those who have paid the contribution. Good luck to all in

the draw!

SCHOOL PHOTOGRAPHS 2014 (repeat)

Dear Parents,

Please note that our whole school photograph day is planned for Tuesday 25th February.

We organise our school photos for this time of the year as all our students are

wearing summer uniform, and they look terrific.

Photographers from Master School Portraits have organised information sheets and

envelopes for both individual and family photos. These have just arrived in the

school and will be distributed to each student on Wednesday 5th February. Please place

the cash (NO CHANGE IS GIVEN) in the envelope or cheque written out to MSP

Photography (with telephone no. on the back) and send to school on the day.

Orders for individual and family photographs will need to be pre-ordered and can

either be sent to your child’s class teacher for processing, or can be ordered by

each family via the online ordering system outlined in the information package.

Please let me know if you have any questions about photo day.

Thank you

Gail Vaughan

Active After School Communities (AASC)

AASC began this week for Term 1. Due to an overwhelming response, my numbers are

high and unfortunately are unable to accept anymore children this term. I am

however, looking for a parent volunteer who may be able to help out, preparing afternoon tea for

the children.

Also, I am exited to announce that Chertsey AASC has been nominated for a “SUPER SITE” award.

This in itself is a great honour as only a couple of schools from each region are chosen annually to

receive the nomination for “NSW SUPER SITE” . AASC works well at Chertsey due to parents,

children, our wonderful volunteer teachers and of course Tania (our greatest afternoon tea maker) and

Aaron (best Zumba dancer). Without everyone's support, programs like this couldn’t happen. So

thank you.

Kate.

The 1-2-3 Magic and Emotion Coaching program aims to teach parents how to deal with their children’s difficult behaviour by using an easy-to-learn and easy-to-use signalling system to manage children’s difficult behaviour. The signalling system requires the par-ent to use less talk and less emotion, which in turn encourages the development children’s ability to manage their emotional reac-tions to parental boundaries (or emotional competency). It helps you teach your children that they have a choice and their choices have consequences. This program give parents strategies on how to effectively use discipline with their children and take the stress out of some of those usually extremely stressful situations you face with growing toddlers and teenagers.

Target group:

The primary target group for group programmes are parents of children in the pre-primary and primary school years, though it has

also been conducted with parents of children as young as two years of age. 1-2-3 Magic can also be used in classrooms by teach-

ers to manage difficult behaviour.

Program content and components:

The three sessions of the program cover the following topics:

The course philosophy, in which parents are familiarised with the two main aims of the program: to increase children’s ability to self-

manage, and to provide parents skills to take action in difficult-to-manage parenting situations

Contemporary thinking in child development with a particular emphasis on the differences between adult and children’s cognitive

abilities

Clear thinking strategies for helping parents to sort between different types of behaviour

The two most common mistakes of parenting – too much to talk and too much emotion

rocesses of pattern-establishment and pattern change including, how negative reinforcement works, the characteristics of patterns,

the parent as participant observer, and how to interrupt patterns and extinction bursts

Response flexibility in parents and carers – knowing how to avoid getting ‘hooked’ by children’s negative emotions

How to choose the best strategy – Do nothing, listen or act?

The 1-2-3 Magic technique:

* what it is, and is not, used for

* how it’s done properly

* how to implement it at home

* how to avoid the two biggest mistakes of parenting

Developing response flexibility in children:

* response flexibility in the brain: What’s new?

* emotion coaching

* cognitive strategies parents can teach children
