Training & General Sailing / Boating Experience
Except for Norwegian Boating License and Short Range VHF Radio Certificate, no formal training, but a lifetime
of boating and sailing experience (Norway, Canada, Sweden, Denmark, Pacific Ocean and Caribbean).
I grew up in the Fanafjord near Bergen on the west coast of Norway and lived there until age 23 (1987) when
I moved to Vancouver Island, British Columbia, Canada. My main interest and hobbies growing up in Norway
were all linked to the sea and included: boating, cruising, fishing, scuba diving and the YMCA scouts. I had
unlimited access to my own skiff and outboard from age 8, cruised aboard various boats (16-27’) with family
and friends and at age 15 I skippered and cruised our family’s motor-sailer (heavy displacement “Viksund”
27’) on my own. I have basically spent every summer season growing up on and in the water cruising and
skippering power and sail boats from 12-50 feet, including skippering our dive club’s vintage 50’ fishing boat
from 1928 along the west coast of Norway. Most of my training I got from my father who was a Ship Master
(unlimited tonnage). The cruising area in Norway ranged between Bergen and Trondheim, which is a very
rough part of the North Sea coast at 60 degrees North.
At age 23 I was offered a General Manager position in Canada by my Norwegian employer, and moved to
Vancouver Island, British Columbia, with my family in 1987. This is where I got actively involved in dinghy
racing (Laser 1 and Flying Junior) and inshore/offshore keel boat racing (various boats from 20-40 feet). We
moved back to Norway in 2003 as I was offered an executive position at my employers head office near
Stavanger, Norway.
