Welcome aboard your flight today with Skippers. With the spring weather upon us hopefully we can enjoy some

sunshine and clear weather which will enable your

trip to be as comfortable as possible.

Perth Airport is still causing havoc. That

combined with Air Traffic Control restrictions is

causing delays of around 30 minutes for each flight,

which is totally out of Skippers’ control and likewise

our return journeys back into Perth are also creating problems in pay load restrictions

on some aircraft due to extra holding requirements. The new Metron system that

is being trialed in Perth is still in its infancy and in fact, from our point of view, is

responsible for delays.

Both the State and Federal Government provide funding to Perth Airport for

infrastructure in and around the airport but fail to address the major problem which is

lack of runway capacity. So we may be able to get to and from the airport easier but

actually flying in and out of the airport has not been addressed.

We are waiting for approval to change the coastal network to provide extra

services to Carnarvon and direct services to Shark Bay/Monkey Mia. Unfortunately

due to lack of support and the fact that there are three or four services a day from

Geraldton, Kalbarri services will be discontinued at the request of the Shire.

Burswood Car Rentals have a guaranteed pick-up and delivery service which

can be ordered online or direct and in most cases are cheaper than the better

known brands.

Skippers’ package holidays through Discover West Holidays have been well

received incorporating all our destinations. Motive Travel also have a number of

sporting tours such as Melbourne Cup as

well as other sporting events.

Skippers Road Transport arm has been

very active in the resource industry

and a couple of loads are shown in the

photos (right).

Skippers Kimberley Air Service routes

servicing Broome, Derby, Fitzroy Crossing

and Halls Creek are being well patronized

by the local community and provide a fast

and comfortable journey to the remote

locations.

Skippers Aviation is now carrying out

the Kambalda Regular Public Transport

services on behalf of Cobham (bookings

and departures are from Cobham’s

terminal).

We once again remind you that we have

wireless internet that is available to our

passengers in the Perth terminal, which is

free of charge. Please enquire upon check in.

Skippers dedicated crews are all simulated trained although not mandated by

CASA. Skippers has elected to train all crew in this manner in the interest of safety.

It is encouraging that there is a lot of activity over our network by emerging

resource companies new and old riding on the back of the current resource boom.

Once again enjoy your journey with us today, we feel privileged to provide this

service and look forward to you flying with us again soon.

I grew up on a sheep farm in the north west of New South Wales. My father is a third or fourth generation farmer and although he’s no longer on our family’s

original property, he carries with him the weathered shadows of his forefathers. Like many Australian bushmen, he somehow continues to find the resilient fortitude to work hard and provide for his family, despite the harsh landscape and fickle weather that so often seems to taunt him. Who else would toil dusk till dawn without holiday pay for 10 year stints of barely breaking even with eternal optimism that next year will be a ‘good’ year? I’ve worked three different jobs since I left university about eight years ago, and that’s four less than my brother, only two years my senior. We’ve grown impatient. Twenty-four-seven connections, millions made and lost in a heart-beat, who sticks around in a job that’s not paying or progressing? But despite the many differences, in many ways I am my father’s son. I have a deep love for my family I rarely voice, I certainly don’t take life too seriously and, well, I have high cholesterol.

I no longer live in a country town like the one I grew up in. In fact I have married and settled abroad with plans of soon beginning my own family. I’ve always had a passion for sports, fitness and helping others which evolved into a degree in health science and a career in health promotion. For several years, I’ve worked in both Australia and North America for a company that helps organisations >>

improve the health and safety behaviours of their employees. And something I see time and time again is something I realise I’ve been seeing all my life; men don’t admit to weaknesses, and they don’t like asking for help.

Perhaps it’s evolution or self preservation, the strongest bull rules the herd, so wear your strengths on your sleeves and bury your problems behind that hard worked leathery skin? Perhaps it’s the sense of responsibility to protect and serve your family, to be the one who listens to problems, fixes problems but never create the problems? Whatever it is fellas, it’s killing us. Just like farming has changed, so too must our attitudes and behaviours if we want to adapt and survive. Our traditional views on masculinity need reform. Steak and eggs are no longer the breakfast of the burly, it’s the plate of heart attack patients. Salads aren’t for wusses, they’re for the champions that will pity our future diabetic selves. For the first time in our history we face the prospect of the next generation having a shorter lifespan than ourselves. That’s not

what I want to pass on to my children, and it is within our power to prevent it. It’s not only about length of life, but quality of life. The prospect of multiple stent procedures, bypass surgeries and living the restrictive life of a person with heart disease, like my grandfather, is not overly appealing to me. And while I’ve played quiet observer as my father has supported his own father and vented frustration at his stubbornness, his lack of willingness to accept help, slow down, move off the farm and give his health the attention it deserves, I’ve begun to witness a strange metamorphous. I am becoming him, while he is becoming my grandfather. Although he is leaps and bounds ahead of my grandfather in many aspects of his preparation for retirement, and despite never smoking and being in far better health than I’ve ever known my grandfather, it is his attitudes towards health that concerns me. Despite his vow that if faced with the same situation as my grandfather, he would listen to his children, I’m yet to see that claim put to practice. Don’t get me wrong, he’s not a walking heart attack waiting to

“The health of Aussie men is rapidly deteriorating, and yet it is largely within their means to prevent it. But it simply won’t happen unless we first shift our attitudes and approaches to the way we educate men about health behaviours.”

happen, he is relatively fit for his age, but he has a very strong family history of cardiovascular disease, and cholesterol issues have plagued him for years. When I last broached the subject with him, the quiet response I got was that his previous visit to the doctor had revealed an elevation in cholesterol, so he hadn’t bothered going back. With a smirk and the mischievous twinkle in his eye I recognise from my childhood he adds, “No news is good news, right?”

Come on dad, your son’s profession is educating people on how to make small changes in their lifestyle to improve their health and quality of life. Your two sons married a physician and nurse respectively, and while you routinely ask us to interpret the “doctor speak” you hear regarding your parents, you have never once asked me how you might go about proactively lowering your cholesterol to avoid medication, or worse, following in your father’s footsteps. As I contemplate becoming a father myself, I can’t help wonder, will my son witness the same sequence of events unfolding between my father and I?

I’m not mad at my dad; he's my hero. But I understand that like so many others, he just doesn’t quite get it. It’s not that he doesn’t want to be healthy, but it’s a part of the culture and generation he grew up in not to ask for help, not to appear vulnerable and not to burden others. Perhaps he thinks his future health is out of his control, a trait I see replicated in men everywhere. Whatever it is, I want to set the record straight. The health of Aussie men is rapidly deteriorating, and yet it is largely within their means to prevent it. But it simply won’t happen unless we first shift our attitudes and approaches to the way we educate men about health behaviours.

According to the Australian Institute of Health and Welfare, around one third of all health costs in Australia are a direct result of health risk factors which are largely preventable. As significant as that sounds, it's possible that it may even be underestimated, considering some figures from other developed nations,

such as the U.S. in which 70 to 75 cents in every one of the two-plus trillion dollars spent on health care annually is spent on a preventable condition (U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention). Either way, it’s significant national burden which could be avoided, or more importantly significant personal suffering that can be prevented. Research estimates as many as 60 to 80 per cent of type 2 diabetes cases can be prevented through lifestyle adjustments to diet and exercise patterns. Did you know Aussie men are more overweight than Australian women? We also smoke more, drink more, eat a lower quality diet and have higher rates of hypertension (high blood pressure).

So come on fellas, come on dad, I know you work hard and you think you are “active”, but it’s time to stop denying the numbers and time you started taking a daily walk for your health. It’s time to ‘pass’ on the pie at smoko and switch to the grilled fish and salad at lunch instead of the burger and chips or ham and cheese sandwich. If you work for an employer that has developed a health promotion program then

understand that it's actually to your benefit to participate. Stop snickering at it and making fun of the blokes stretching at lunchtime and join in. Your quality of life as you age and the example of healthy values you instill in your children are in your hands. Many things change, and culture and attitudes can evolve. The way we can fashion a shift in the culture of men’s health is if we tip the scales of acceptance and participation towards the majority. As long as it remains the minority who openly speak about health and proactively change their behaviours to improve it, it will continue to face cultural resistance. Man up fellas. You have a choice. Do nothing, maintain your crusty exterior fortress and don’t let anyone in to help you improve your health; I urge you to ponder the likely destination of that path. Or, go to the doctor. Learn about your current health status and ask them about small changes you can make to your lifestyle to improve or maintain it. Do you want to enjoy a healthy and active retirement with your loved ones? Which path do you think will get you there? If you need motivation, do it for your spouse or do it for your children. But most of all, you should do it for yourself.

Dad, I appreciate everything you’ve done for me, but what you can do for me now is take some time and make more of an effort to look after yourself.

Perth is currently experiencing incredible economic and social

growth, with exciting new developments paving the way as a city for the future.

New bars, restaurants, retail outlets and cultural spaces are popping up in all corners of the city and its neighbouring precincts.

The State Government is also heavily investing in new infrastructure that will functionally and aesthetically transform the city, creating a more vibrant business and social hub.

While the streets begin to widen to create room for public open spaces, alfresco dining and more, other major capital works projects taking place in Perth city and WA include:

PERTH WATERFRONT DEVELOPMENT: ELIZABETH QUAYApril 2012 saw a new chapter in Perth’s history, with the commencement of work on the $440 million Perth Waterfront project that will connect the Swan River to Perth’s central business district (CBD).

The project is the centrepiece of the State Government’s plan to

transform the city to ensure it is capable of meeting the needs of the rapidly growing population. Ten hectares of prime riverfront land will be developed into a vibrant, contemporary precinct designed to be a place for people, and showcasing the latest thinking in sustainable building and urban design.

PERTH CITY LINKThe Perth City Link will reunite Perth’s city centre with the Northbridge entertainment district for the first time in over 100 years. It will create strong linkages to the foreshore, deliver more people and activity into the city and generate new opportunities for diverse experiences, while complementing other developments and changes in the city.

The Link will also deliver a range of benefits to the community including improved public safety, access and connectivity, increased residential, retail and commercial opportunities and a high quality public domain.mra.wa.gov.au

Perth Airport by owners, Westralia Airports Corporation (WAC).Over the next three years changes will see a new $120 million domestic

terminal built next to the International Terminal. This new terminal will service the needs of regional WA and some interstate routes.

Other developments include the expansion of the arrivals and departures areas in the International Terminal and construction of a new domestic pier. Outside the terminals, there will be dedicated passenger pick-up and drop-off areas and easy access to taxis and buses.

Perth Airport is also working closely with the WA Government to help plan for a major upgrade to the arterial road network around Perth Airport.

The Kimberley Coast is incredibly irregular. As the ancient Kimberley ranges extend into the warm tropical

seas they create over 2600 islands, which is more than 30 per cent of all Australian Islands. They are incredibly clustered, starting on the tip of the Dampier Peninsula and extending only a few hundred kilometres up the coast. The west Kimberley should be known as Australia’s Isle Coast.

The complex coastline was created by huge river systems carving the ancient 19 hundred million year old Kimberley plateau into the rugged ranges and beautiful river valleys we see today.

Ten thousand to 15,000 years ago the coast was 150km further out to sea and as the earth came out of an Ice Age the ocean flooded the river valleys creating thousands of islands. Its geological term is a Rhia Coast and it’s one of the best examples found on the globe.

The Kimberley coastline can be thought of as starting at Broome in the west to Wyndham in the east. In a direct line these Kimberley towns are roughly 800km apart. If you track the coast between them there is over 14,500km of coastline, more than the entire Eastern Seaboard. Access to this incredible coastline is notoriously difficult. Between Broome and Wyndham there are only three primary roads which extend to the

coast, The Dampier Peninsula, Derby and the Kalumburu Track. Imagine over 14,000 km of coast with only three roads!

And once you get there, what do you find? An extreme marine environment second to none, driven by the largest tropical tides on earth (13m at Derby) pulsing in and out every six hours, squeezing through a maze of islands creating currents in excess of 15 knots (27km/h). Ancient rocky islets hold their ground against the ferocious tidal currents generating impressive standing waves, whirlpools and confused water in a spectacle more suited to a raging river than

a tropical ocean. A marine environment arguably less

understood by western science than the moon. Preliminary research reports a hard coral ecosystem of immense proportions with higher bio-diversity than the Ningaloo Reef. It is possibly rivalling the Great Barrier Reef for diversity and obvious adaptations which will rock the scientific world in terms of our understanding on coral reef ecosystems.

An age old coastline, misunderstood and intimidating to all visitors, except for the aboriginal people of the area who have

inhabited it for eons. They have lived in sync with it for a period of time so long that they truly are part of it. Groups such as the Bardi Jawi people have used the terrifying tidal currents as helpful highways to traverse their ‘Seacountry’ on their simple yet perfect mangrove rafts. Their knowledge of the land and sea scape is so incredibly detailed that it is hard for us “new Australians” to comprehend. A people who have always inhabited their country, with an incredible cultural fabric still in perfect continuum and who now open their home, their country and their story to visitors from across the world.

Of course the main driver of Europeans to this coast was pearl shell. Pinctada Maxima (the largest mother of pearl species) was found on the Eighty Mile Beach in such abundance it truly is a natural phenomenon. The gold rush style boom which created Broome later led to the most valuable cultured pearl production in the world being set up in the remote yet perfectly protected and sheltered bays along the Kimberley Coast.

There are many unforgettable ways to witness these incredible tidal movements. Take to the skies on >>

For a person wanting to take responsibility for one’s self-healing and wellbeing, correcting a misaligned atlas with the AtlasPROfilax® wellness method can be an essential starting point. Once corrected, noticeable reactions - which can, depending on the individual, occur immediately after AtlasPROfilax® wellness treatment, every now and then, or weeks, or even months later - are an indication that self healing is occurring. The following rule of thumb applies: the more a human body and psyche were ill, or the more structural misalignment, the stronger the reaction may be. Possible reactions range from severe tiredness to muscle tension around the neck region, the upper back and/or the lumbar region, up to previous and not completely healed diseases. Therefore, observe your body carefully, noting any changes and if needed assist the self healing process with the appropriate support.

PREVENTION

Allowing the atlas to find its correct postion using the AtlasPROfilax® method is simple, safe procedure that can produce lifelong advantages. It can be applied to children as a possible preventative measure, allowing them to them grow up healthily and develop to their fullest potential.

The AtlasPROfilax® method can and may only be practiced safely by a specialist – an Atlasprof® – educated and certified at the AtlasPROfilax Academy in Valais, Switzerland. ONE TREATMENT CAN BE LIFE CHANGING

The Atlas supports your head and governs structural alignment. A misaligned atlas causes restriction of the brain stem, spinal cord, cranial nerves and arteries. This limits our potential for wellbeing and creates tension, restricting the free fl ow of energy.

To take a giant step towards your health and wellbeing, contact: Dorthy Luchterhand,

Atlasprof® Certifi ed at Atlasprofi lax Academy, Switzerland

This model shows a misaligned atlas to the left side. Depending on the rotation angle, a misaligned atlas may cause a reduction of the volume of the skull opening and the vertebral canal. This can expose the spinal cord, different cranial nerves and other nerve tracts to continuous pressure, and lead to the constriction of the vertebral arteries, the carotid artery and various other vessels, lymphatic and cerebrospinal fluid.

The AtlasPROfilax® method is unique worldwide, in being able to correct a misaligned atlas with only one application - accurately, safely and permanently.

If the atlas is in its correct position, the brain can function without the disturbances caused by previous misalignment. It can feel like it wants to catch up with what it could not create in harmony before. It can now set in place valuable self-healing and regenerative processes, enabling the entire human organism to begin to function better. In addition, correcting the position of the atlas may make other treatments and therapies more effective.

THE METHOD

REGENERATION

FREE YOUR BODY TO SELF-HEAL

Did you know that the the atlas is misaligned in many humans? Misalignment of the atlas may lead to a variety of physical and psychological ailments and illnesses; this misalignment can also be responsible for pain and discomfort anywhere in the body. This was discovered by Swiss René-Claudius Schümperli, himself painfully affected by a misaligned atlas, who, between 1993 and 1996 developed a revolutionary method that can facilitate the return of the atlas back into its correct position.

THE STARTING POINT

THE CAUSE

Your Atlas should be in this position

View from below

Body cells and organs do not, however, regenerate over night. After the atlas has been allowed to return to its correct position by using the AtlasPROfilax® method, the organism reacts according to the overall physical and psychological condition of the individual. For many people healing is immediately initiated and many symptoms are immediately relieved. While others, whose organism has never functioned correctly and with full capacity to begin with, must endure more patience. Unfortunately, there are some cases, where an already too severely ill and long-term disordered organism may no longer be rebuilt.

It consists of a specialised, targeted massage to the short neck musculature, which is designed to loosen the existing tension in those muscles and, consequentially, to facilitate the return of the atlas to its natural position. This method does not employ any manipulative movements of the head or neck. A subsequent appointment with additional support for the self-healing process is essential. The Seven Cervical Vertebrae

1 - The Back Arch of the Atlas2 - The Lateral Extensions of the Atlas

2 2 1Posterior view of the Upper Cervical Spine and Occiput

Continuous pressure on the spinal cord, the cerebral nerves, various arteries and vessels, etc. can cause severe physical and mental disturbances, ailments and illnesses. Because the atlas not only carries the skull, but also facilitates suspension, balance and control of the spine and the skeleton, a misaligned atlas may be the cause of serious disturbances and changes in the posture. Symptomatic ailments and illnesses may include neck pain and stiffness, back pain, lumbago, herniated disc, scoliosis, jammed spinal nerves, scoliotic pelvis, pain in the jaw, arms, hips, knees, meniscus and other illnesses of the knee, difference in leg length etc.

Oil Free Anti Corrosion ProtectionMost people have bad aches and pains in their lives, but do

many of you either live with the pain, or assume it’ll eventually correct itself? According to Dorthy Luchterhand who provides

the service of the Atlasprofilax treatment in WA, in most cases the cause for these aches and pains will certainly not correct itself…

Dorthy, tell us more about the atlas and the problems associated? The first cervical vertebra, the atlas, is rotated and tilted in most people. That means that there is constantly more weight and pressure on one side of the body than on the other. As the body is compensating, neck or back tensions can occur very easily. Atlasprofilax is a simple method to correct the position of the atlas in only one session.

What are the benefits of having a correctly positioned atlas?Instantly, clients feel more upright. The whole neck area loosens up and the client gains more mobility around the neck. Some say it feels like putting some oil on their good old machinery. In the long run, the body does not tense up as quickly any more. There are improvements of symptoms like neck pain, back pain, trouble with the hips or knees, bulging discs...but even chronic headaches, blocked sinuses, depression or vertigo.

How long before results? It is a one-off treatment. A few weeks later we do a re-check of the atlas, which also includes a back massage – to assist the body in the process of getting used to the new posture.

For more information, or to book your Atlasprofilax treatment, contact Dorthy Luchterhand by emailing [email protected] or phone 0431 051 257. n

The time for talking is over. You’re ready to buy your first investment property. You’ve read a few books,

attended a few seminars and researched the property market. The bank has confirmed how much you can borrow and you’ve been inspecting properties to buy, but still there are so many questions.

Which type of property should I buy? A house or an apartment? A new property or an established home? A property in the city, suburbs or a regional town? Should I be focused on capital growth or rental yield?

The answer to many of these questions will depend on your personal circumstances and there are no fixed answers. But as the CEO of Australia’s largest metropolitan property agency, I’ve heard all the reasons for and against all

the main property investment strategies. Some investors favour buying “the worst

house in the best street” and renovating it to generate equity. Others love buying apartments off the plan because of the stamp duty savings, depreciation benefits and lack of maintenance. And some will only buy near where they live because they have a thorough knowledge of local property values while others aim for the next “hot” suburb to buy before prices skyrocket.

This should not be confusing. It is heartening to know that there are many ways to make money from property and they can all work. It depends on your strategy. The thing to note is that there are several factors that are common to many property investment philosophies.

Here are my highlights:

LOCATION. Buy close to services that people want such as shops, train stations and schools. Avoid noisy roads and favour attractive neighbourhoods.

SCARCITY. Art deco apartments and Victorian cottage houses are popular throughout property cycles because they are in limited supply which increases demand and price.

FEATURES. Properties with views or attractions such as outdoor living spaces or units in small blocks with off-street parking attract premium prices and rents.

DEMAND. Median valued properties will have broad appeal. Low rental vacancy rates prove high demand and ongoing income. Ensure regional infrastructure can

support a range of industries and activities

which draw tenants through growth in

population and jobs.

CAPITAL GROWTH. Increasing property

prices build equity or profit which can be used

to expand a portfolio, reduce debt or finance

lifestyle. Negative gearing advocates aim to

maximise how much capital growth their

money can buy rather than how many rooms

or how much land. In other words, they might

buy a one-bedroom apartment instead of a

four-bedroom house at the same price.

RENTAL YIELD. Strong rental income finances investment and builds a portfolio with a cash flow buffer that protects against debt. With “cash flow as king”, many investors have built substantial portfolios in relatively short periods.

WOW FACTORS. Impressive features such as water views, closeness to beaches, rooftop decks or over-sized garages can draw extra dollars now and in future.

BUY VALUE. Aim to make money when you buy, not when you sell.

PRESENTATION. Investors willing to renovate don’t have to pay for presentation if they get a tired property and significantly improve it with inexpensive cosmetic changes such as repainting or renewing kitchen doors or benches. This can lead to higher rent, faster

capital growth and better tenants.

POTENTIAL. What can this property be turned into? Can you create an extra bedroom with a wall in the lounge? Can the backyard be subdivided for sale or construction of a second dwelling?

COMPROMISE. Write a list of factors you want in a property and aim for the main targets. Rarely will the first purchase be your dream home. Use it to kick-start your property portfolio.

THINK OUTSIDE THE SQUARE. Consider buying an investment property while you rent. By renting where you want to live and buying in an area you can afford, you can get a foot on the property ladder. Or buy with a friend if you can’t afford a property alone.

According to Catherine Leach, managing director and lawyer at Leach Legal, this is not the case but as with any community, it’s still ever present and the FIFO lifestyle creates unique stresses on separation and divorce. “I find that FIFO clients are usually very focused on what is best for their family,” Catherine said. “Perhaps that is why they undertake FIFO work in the first place – it certainly can’t be easy being away for long periods of time.”

“Relatively speaking, they have amicable divorces in my experience - perhaps their separate lives have given them some important lessons in communicating while apart that puts them a step ahead.” An amicable divorce is by no means ‘easy’, nothing about this is easy, but it’s comforting to hear Catherine put a positive angle on the FIFO experience.

According to Catherine, one of the most important things for anyone contemplating or going through divorce to know is that whilst many people will be giving you advice, in her experience most of it’s wrong.

“They really just need to get advice from someone who’s experienced in family law,” Catherine said. “Get good advice early on so that you’re armed with the right information to make a decision.”

But it’s not only divorce clients that Catherine deals with in the mining industry as many of her clients are simply arming

themselves with information for the future. “People might meet somebody and want

to start living with them, but want to know beforehand what the worst case scenario is, particularly for younger FIFO workers who are quickly accumulating an asset base” she said. “There is an assumption that once you live with someone for six months, they’re entitled to half your assets and that’s just not the case at all.”

“What happens when you get married is you get a marriage certificate so that’s clear but when you’re de facto, there’s a lot of different ways people can live de facto. Sometimes they may not be de facto even through they think they are.”

But if the idea of going to a lawyer for advice seems a little too scary, Catherine says it shouldn’t be a daunting experience.

“A lot of people are frightened that if they go to a lawyer they’re going to be signing documents and putting truckloads of money into their trust account and they’ll be locked in forever,” Catherine said. “But we just say ring us up and speak with a lawyer, it’s no obligation, we quote you and then you go away and do what you want to do from there.”

“You need to be able to do that with any lawyer because you need to be comfortable with them.” n

A fter winning the AFA Adviser of the Year, Troy MacMillan of the Wealth Designers speaks exclusively to our

editor Bettina Maniatis about the valued advice and services they can offer those working in the mining industry.

Bettina: Troy, congratulations on your win. Troy: It’s a really big thing, especially for a Perth business to win it! And on the back of that we have had a lot of business come from the mining industry so it’s good for us to promote that and it gives us a lot of credibility. People from the Pilbara are always looking for financial advice and a lot of them don’t know where to go.

Bettina: So, for those readers who are doing exactly that and looking for financial advice what can you tell us? Troy: Well, The Wealth Designers are a boutique financial planning business with offices in Perth. Our specialisation is that we’ve had all our advisers come from accounting backgrounds so we have what is required to really deal with the complexities that our clients sometimes have. By having the accounting background, we’re able to delve deeper into financial issues and give more detailed financial advice than people might normally receive.

Bettina: It sounds like you really take the time to get to know your clients… Troy: Yes, we spend a lot of time really working out what’s important to the client. What are their goals, their hopes, their dreams, ambitions, their wants. And we collect all that information in our first meeting.

Bettina: Troy, a lot of our readers are currently working in the mining industry, can you tell me how you might be able to help them specifically?

Troy: There’s a range of different niche markets that we work in and mining is one of those, along with people who are going through or considering divorce as well as the medical industry.

We have recently published our white paper on divorce which outlines how we help these people to restructure their financial affairs, ideally by providing strategies for splitting wealth during the negotiation process and ideally not leaving it until after settlement.

We have a number of clients up in the Pilbara who are all working in mining, oil and gas, and these people have their own complexities because generally they’re high income earners but they have tax concerns. They normally don’t have an asset base yet but they’re planning to have an asset base so need good structure and strategy advice. They also have concerns around family and education which is something we look at for them as well.

Bettina: So I understand your experience with the mining industry, but is there anything else that makes you different from other financial advisors? Troy: The way we charge is quite different than the rest of the industry. We only charge a flat fixed fee for all our services whereas the industry usually charge a percentage so they have entry fees, exit fees, there’s fees for the management, and there’s all these hidden commissions and charges. We found that by charging a flat fixed fee, it’s far more fair. It’s also tax deductible so we make it a lot easier and more cost effective.

Thank you very much Troy and again congratulations on your recent win. n

Mediation is mandatory for parenting matters before you attempt court

(with exemption of some circumstances)

Children through DivorceDealing withWhilst divorce is very obviously

a difficult time for the couple contemplating or going through it,

it can also be a very confusing and painful time for children.

Thankfully though, there’s plenty of help available with companies like Aresolution who specialise in conflict resolution.

We spoke to Principal Mediator Douja Elhajj about what Aresolution does exactly and some of the things many separated couples with children may not know.

We recognise that for FIFO families, they’re particularly vulnerable to an imbalance of parenting roles. We recognise that when one parent’s away, they turn to the absent parent role which limits their time with children. And when separation happens, we understand that there’s a significant impact on the family dynamic and the relationships with their children, particularly where they have a rotating roster which is constantly changing creating an unstructured process. So one of the things that we like to help with is to work around that - to maintain flexibility but keep a structured plan for time with children, how they communicate and how to maintain strong attachments with children.

Family dispute resolution is just focused around the children’s best interests and

making sure that their psychological, emotional and developmental needs are met. So the work that we do to work with separating and separated parents includes discussions around significant others - for instance new partners, grandparents and other people who are highly involved in raising and caring for the children. But the focus is always around making sure the children get what they need which is positive relationships and just to be able to be children.

Parents need to know that mediation is mandatory for child related matters. People tend to contact the government agencies and they don’t realise that there are services like ours available. We can offer a quick service that is extremely flexible and works around FIFO rosters.

In terms of time, it’s more effective. In terms of results, it’s more effective. Because there are alot of agreements that can be reached by parents that can’t be reached in the family court environment. We create really comprehensive plans.

The demand for Aboriginal employees in the mining industry, particularly in WA, has risen to unprecedented levels.

In the mid 1990s, Aboriginal employment in some of the biggest resource sector employers represented less than 0.5 per cent of their total workforce. Today, it has risen to around 10 per cent, and many companies have targets to double that over the next five years.

This commitment from mining companies to attract, recruit and train Aboriginal workers provides a valuable investment into business, but complex issues can slow the process: requirements to train, house and address the health issues of Aboriginal employees can prove time-intensive, costly and culturally challenging.

Ngarda, Australia’s largest owned and operated Aboriginal contracting company, is uniquely placed to assist mining companies in meeting their indigenous employment goals while delivering real benefits to Aboriginal >>EMPLOYMENT

people. The company’s extensive experience in civil and mining projects has directly led to the training, employment and development of over 2,000 people, most of who are Aboriginal, since the company began over 10 years ago. Ngarda’s Cultural Awareness Training and new mentoring programs can provide critical services not only for Aboriginal employment but also long-term engagement and inclusion.

Ngarda’s projects are largely concentrated in the Pilbara, including completed and active projects in Pannawonica, Karratha, Yarrie, Paraburdoo and Port Hedland. Its largest current project is Yarrie Iron Ore: conducted in partnership with BHP Billiton, the whole-of-mine project has a contract value of $400million and employs about 200 staff. The company itself currently has around 35 per cent Aboriginal employment, more than three times that of the

largest employers in mining, and has ambitions

to increase this to 50 per cent.

Ngarda’s Chief Executive Officer Dan Tenardi

said the recruitment of experienced Aboriginal

people who were suited to local conditions had

a two-pronged effect.

“Through solid relationships, Ngarda is

uniquely positioned to provide ‘job-ready’

Indigenous workers on various site operations,”

Mr Tenardi said. “This not only puts us at a

competitive advantage, but has also enabled us

to build the capability and capacity of the local

Aboriginal population, so they can continue to

develop within their communities.”

Aboriginal people have benefited from the

mining boom, primarily due to Indigenous Land

Use Agreements, but also with joint ventures,

training, employment and procurement of

Aboriginal companies.

This has led to greater Aboriginal inclusion,

allowing companies to meaningfully engage

Aboriginal people in ways that provide growth

opportunities that contribute to their sustainable,

economic and cultural development.

The 2012 YZF-R1

Yamaha has introduced an updated YZF-R1 featuring a range of important MotoGP inspired engine and chassis changes that are

designed to elevate the performance and enjoyment of this unique race proven motorcycle to another level.

This model dominated road racing around the globe in 2011 by taking out FX, AMA and BSB Superbike titles thanks to Yamaha Racing Team’s veteran ace Kevin Curtain, US star Josh Hayes and UK based Tommy Hill.

On the road or track, the R1 rewards the rider like no other large capacity super sport machine, and for even more highly purified excitement the 2012 R1 is equipped with an advanced Traction Control System (TCS) for wider ranging controllability in a variety of conditions.

The feeling of total confidence in your machine’s abilities is one of the most important qualities that any bike can offer, and the new TCS inspires a high level of trust in the new R1’s roadholding performance. By monitoring and controlling rear wheel spin, the new TCS creates a special bond between the rider and machine, enabling the owner to exploit the enormous potential of this outstanding motorcycle.

Faster on the track, safer on the street the advanced new seven-mode TCS (Traction Control System) has been developed using feedback gained from the winning Yamaha YZR-M1 MotoGP racer.

Located in the heart of New Zealand’s southern lakes region, Lake Wanaka is the gateway to Mount Aspiring National

Park and Te Wahipounamu world heritage area. It’s been described as a region of soaring mountains and deep alpine lakes and is a popular year-round holiday destination.

Now coming into summer, the braided rivers and lakes are alive with people enjoying water-based leisure sports including boating and fishing. The mountains offer extensive hiking tracks, mountaineering and rock climbing for outdoor enthusiasts.

For those nature lovers, Wanaka’s natural environment is a haven for rare native birds and plant life, including endangered buff weka on Mou Waho Island - a nature reserve in the middle of Lake Wanaka.

If you’re more into your action and adventure, you’ll be kept busy as the region is known as New Zealand’s rock climbing capital with hundreds of rock routes - ranging from grade nine to 30 - on the edge of Mt Aspiring National Park.

Additionally, award-winning skydiving experiences give another perspective on the Wanaka landscape. From a 15,000ft drop, skydivers experience up to 60 seconds of

freefall over an alpine wilderness that includes New Zealand’s highest mountains, isolated glaciers, and lakes.

So if you’re in the midst of planning your summer holiday, try out Lake Wanaka – you will love it.

At the end of the day - and brace yourselves ladies because this might hurt – every wedding has a hiccup.

Even if you’ve been to a wedding and it seemed fairytale, you can almost guarantee someone behind the scenes is pulling their hair out - and that’s OK. But there are some things that aren’t OK – no wedding cake, wilted flowers or inappropriate music for example could make or break your big day.

So in the lead up to planning your big day, we’ve compiled a handy list to take into account to help make your perfect day, perfect!

Squish unrealistic expectationsThe is the most common, and worst mistake to make. Having unrealistic expectations means you are expecting the day to go off without the slightest hitch. No matter how long you’ve been planning for, how many professionals you hire, how many nights you’ve spent practising your speech or wedding dance, something can always go wrong.

Every wedding will have some kind of glitch. If it all went perfectly, it wouldn’t be a wedding! You need these hiccups, those will be the moments you look back on and have a chuckle about.

Plan in StepsThis may seem obvious, but planning is the key to your special day. Every couple is different in terms of time frame – some people have a few weeks to plan whilst others, a few years! It is not so much the amount of time you have, but what you do with it.

It’s quite simple, you just need a priority list. Make sure you include every little detail, and put them in order of importance and expense. This way, you can see clearly what needs

to be done and how long it will take to get arranged - and most importantly, you won’t get overwhelmed.

The great thing about the priority list is that it doesn’t matter whether you’re planning a large wedding or a small wedding, whether you have a longer period of time or shorter, you can adapt your list to suit you.

Be careful with “I’ll do it myself” People are always coming up with ways to cut costs, but you have to be careful. Of course cost cutting is excellent but you need to take

other things like time and quality into account as well. For my wedding, I made the invitations myself and whilst they looked great, they took me forever and ended up costing even more than what they would have if I hired someone to do it all because all the little things added up.

Additionally, the ‘big’ things to you aren’t the things you should be cost cutting on.

Beauty treatmentsSo it’s 9am and the wedding starts in 5 hours. You think you have plenty of time for a spray tan, teeth whitening, nails with French tips, waxing, hair, make up… getting the point? >>

There are two things that cannot be done any earlier than the day; your hair and your make up. Everything else should be done on another day, not THE day.

ContractsThis of course goes hand in hand with planning but something to watch out for is not having every wedding supplier you book sign every contract.

Keep a wedding folder with copies of all your contracts so that should you need those agreements at any stage, they are on hand. Don’t forget the contract any supplier gives to you isn’t written in stone. Don’t be scared to request amendments.

Tailor to youThe wedding is all about the bride and groom – that’s it. Of course you’re celebrating the coming together of two families as well, but fundamentally the day is to celebrate your love.

When choosing designs, menus, locations, and all the rest, try not to think too much about what will be most popular with everyone else and think about what YOU really want. It seems obvious but you’d be surprised how many couples end up choosing many elements to their wedding based on outside influences.

After the big dayWhen it comes time to open all the gifts, a little organisation here will make a world of difference. Make sure you keep a record of exactly who got you what. Even if you have chosen to go with a wishing well instead of gifts, a very popular option nowadays, keep a record of exactly how much each guest gave you.

If you opt to re-gift any wedding presents in the future (don’t be ashamed we all do it), this information will also be vital to ensure the gift doesn’t get back to its original giver! Of course, make sure you don’t re-gift gifts to people who are friends with the original givers as well – yes, word will get back to them!

Take it all in – Enjoy! How many times have you been to a party, where the host is running around making sure everyone is OK and frankly, having a miserable time because the whole event has zoomed past and they haven’t been able to relax and enjoy themselves? Concentrate on nothing but yourself and your partner. It’s your day.

Remember, whilst a wedding can be a very stressful time – it’s not meant to be. The stress will only get as bad as you allow. Most of these tips are common sense and reasoning, but you’d be surprised how easy it is to lose those things when in the midst of your wedding planning. So happy planning brides and grooms – and remember the most important tip of all; have an amazing time! n

When it comes to training and services in the resource sector, Reliability Success has a great track record to get your company headed in the right direction.

“In times of cost pressure, it’s really essential for companies to look at productivity; so this is really what we focus on,” said Reliability Success Founder Daryl Mather. “We’re making sure that we’re doing the right work; work that is helping increase performance, not wasting time, not wasting effort and not creating trouble.”

According to Daryl, productivity is vital to any business. “Productivity is a focus on cost reduction and performance

improvement” he emphasised.Don’t be fooled though as Daryl highlights that it’s just as

important to leave things that are working fine well alone, instead of interfering with systems where it’s not required.

“It’s important to realise that even though you think you are doing the right thing, quite often if that’s where you’re causing problems,” he said. “This can mean every time that they muck around with some things you are increasing the likelihood that something will go wrong.”

So if your business is in need of a bit of tweaking when it comes to training and services, go with a company that has the track record to back it up.

“We have records of reducing routine maintenance tactics from somewhere between 40 to 90 per cent,” Daryl summarised. “That means it’s a huge reduction in redundancy that they don’t need to be doing.”

LOCAL BUSINESS

BUZZI attended a conference recently, where a

mining industry manager bemoaned the all too common situation of continually

shelling out big money for people who couldn’t deliver on agreed expectations.

Stepping through the catalogue of ‘offences’ he listed the usual suspects: staff leaving after short periods, junior staff not up to tasks and managers waylaid from their responsibilities to fill the widening gaps.

Sadly, while this most recent ‘mining boom’ has produced some excellent professionals who take pride and skill in their work, unchecked demand has also helped to foster mediocrity, and worse. Digirock’s specialist Exploration-on-Line team is on call to help staff – at all levels - come to grips with their roles and responsibilities and to help get your business back on track.

How much is wasted time costing you? See the example below.

• DaysworkedxFixingproblemsx Answering questions = $23,100* per annum (* 231 days at $600 per day).

Improvements to deliver value, save time and money: There is no ‘quick fix’. However, the improvement process begins with executive leadership and a commitment to targeted, practical, staff training. This includes clearly defined staff roles, focused skills training, the back-up of written procedures and a foundation of clear and logical administrative systems for filing and reporting. With help, your workplace can deliver value, save time and money.

Simple stuff? You’d think so. But not everyone has the time, or immediately available expertise to make it happen. Digirock does. Our Exploration-on-Line team specialises in providing comprehensive and practical exploration procedures and systems, designed for and created by, expert exploration personnel.

With a rock-solid reputation for excellent technical and logistical skills, teamwork and great client focus, Digirock people are enthusiastic, and its services are reliable, professional and always in demand.

To learn how you can improve company results, deliver value, and save time and money, speak with our Exploration-on-Line team. Check our website at www.explorationonline.com.au, email us at [email protected] or call +61 (0)8 9472 6441.

SAFETY BRIEFING Please listen carefully to the Safety Briefing and take the time to read through the Safety On Board Card prior to takeoff. This will help you familiarise yourself with the emergency exits, brace position and the location of your life jacket.

DEEP VEIN THROMBOSIS (DVT)It has been reported that some airline passengers have developed clots in deep blood vessels, often in the lower legs, as a result of sitting for an extended period without exercise or movement.

This condition is known medically as Deep Vein Thrombosis, or DVT. If blood clot fragments break off and lodge in other areas of the body such as the lungs, they may cause a possible fatal pulmonary thrombosis when a person starts walking after being immobile for a long time.

The risk factors for DVT include varicose veins, recent surgery or injury in the lower legs, malignant diseases, past history of DVT, obesity, pregnancy and recent childbirth. Anyone with these risk factors is advised to consult a doctor prior to flying to find out how to minimise the risk of DVT.

During the flight, we recommend passengers take the following precautions:

• Drink plenty of fluids, especially water, and minimise intake of alcohol.

• Exercise onboard the aircraft by moving and stretching your toes, rotating your ankles, raising and lowering each leg and massaging your calves gently. In addition, we suggest that you avoid crossing your legs.

SEATBELTSSeatbelts must be firmly fastened for take-off, landing and whilst the seatbelt sign is illuminated. We do recommend that your seatbelt be fastened at all times whilst seated in case of unexpected turbulence.

TRAY TABLES/SEAT BACKSPlease ensure your tray tables and your seat backs are in the upright position for take-off and landing.

SMOKINGGovernment regulations strictly prohibit smoking on all domestic flights. Special smoke detectors have been fitted to the toilet on board the aircraft. Smoking is also prohibited on the tarmac and throughout the terminal buildings.

CARRY ON LUGGAGEIf you have carry on luggage please stow it in the overhead lockers or under the seat in front of you. Hand luggage not correctly stowed may cause injury in the event of unexpected turbulence.

ELECTRONIC DEVICESHazards exist to aircraft systems by Electro-Magnetic Interference from Portable Electronic Devices. The interference can cause aircraft systems to malfunction. To provide adequate protection for the aircraft please note that: mobile phones are not to be used at any time on board the aircraft. Other devices such as compact disc players, portable palm top and lap top computers, cassette players, personal electronic organisers or personal video games may be used during cruise only, NOT when the aircraft is taking off and landing.

TODD MCKENNEYOCCUPATION: Actor

FAVOURITE TRAVEL DESTINATION AND WHY: My favourite travel destination would have to be Rome. The Italians are all so incredibly friendly and the architecture is so fascinating. It’s such a great city to visit. Rome is also home to my favourite hotel, The Hotel Eden, which is at the top of the Spanish Steps.

TRAVEL TIP: Don’t drink on flights!!!

MOST EMBARRASSING/FUNNY TRAVEL MOMENT: About five years ago, I was flying to Perth to sing the national anthem at the Perth Cup and the guy sitting next to me on the plane fell asleep and spilt his glass of champagne all over me! I had to head straight to the event and turned up smelling like a brewery which was very awkward trying to explain!

WHAT’S COMING UP FOR YOU NEXT? Up next for me is the national tour of my new show Songs and Stories of Peter Allen which kicks off in Perth on October 18. It’s a project that is very near and dear to my heart and something I’m very excited about. Head to my website, www.toddmckenney.com.au for more details. n
