JUNE 2017

Plastic pollution is killing our marinelife. 30% of the world’s turtles and 90%of seabird species have ingested plasticdebris.

One of the serious offenders is plasticbags. Australians use around 4 billionplastic bags every year — that’s awhopping 10 million or so each day.

We have to act now to clean up ouroceans for the generations of tomorrow.

South Australia, Tasmania, theNorthern Territory and ACT already havesuccessful plastic bag bans in place.Queensland has also committed tobanning plastic bags by 2018. It’s time forNew South Wales, Victoria and WesternAustralia to step up and take plastic bagsoff the menu for marine life, as the bagstake hundreds of years to break down.

HOW MANY MARINE ANIMALS DID YOUR PLASTIC GROCERY BAG KILL?Plastic can also get caught on fins and

flippers, or around an animal’s neck, restricting its movement and ability tohunt and eat.

Some animals have whole flippers orfeet amputated by plastic slowlytightening around affected areas.

Plastic bags smother coral, restrictinggrowth and destroying the naturalhabitats, affecting different species ofmarine wildlife.

Internationally, Australia is laggingbehind the rest of the world. China,Taiwan, France, Italy, The Netherlandsand Kenya are among other countrieswhich have already banned plastic bags.

Supermarket giants Coles andWoolworths said they would be happy tocomply with such a ban.

Greenpeace, Clean Up Australia, andChannel Ten's “The Project” havelaunched ambitious campaigns to banplastic bags.

You can help solve this problem. Nextwhen you shop, take your own bags withyou and fill them with your groceries, instead of using the shop’s plastic bags.

Tell Australia that you care about ourmarine animals ... now is the time to unite and be heard. Sign the petition onthe Greenpeace website today: act.greenpeace.org.au/efforts/ban-the-bag-1

How it will be deliveredYour name will be delivered to the

State Environment Minister in order toshow her just how many people in NSWwant a ban on single-use plastic bags.

Turtles frequentlymistake plastic bagsfor jellyfish and eatthem, and die ofsuffocation.

JUNE 2017

Early morning, chilly, overcast and lightrain, a gloomy start. But the faces of ourfriends and neighbours, a friendly smile, anda nod, and the world seemed right again.

In the background could be heard theRSL Youth Choir warming up their vocalchords with breathing exercises. The hallwas abuzz with volunteers setting up, andthe poppy carpet was laid on the steps.

Robert Ellis drove his jeep into position, while the Air League cadets all asplendourin their blue uniforms, manned the flagpoles.

to him, in our Memorial Walkway. His cousinWilliam laid a poppy on the paver to honourNeville.

Wreaths were laid by Jeanette and RonSchofield (14 years office-bearers in theColo Vale Community Assn), Ian Scandrett, the local RFS, and children from the schoolwhose wreath was home-crafted with freshflowers.

The lonesome sound of the Last Postechoed in our ears, as we solemnly bowedour heads, the flags lowered, and we gazedat the poppy carpet collectively created inremembrance of the fallen.

Colo Vale Anzac Day 2017

Pam Stead opened the proceedings withthe Lords Prayer, then John Stead took overthe “mic” with his usual calm manner andprofessionalism. The children from the ColoVale Public School made an address aboutthose who served in the war, and the historyof Neville Hanna, a WW2 serviceman fromAylmerton, as a paver was being dedicated

Around 250 people attended the ColoVale Anzac Day Service at the MemorialWalkway. Ian Scandrett, Deputy Mayor ofWingecarribee Council, the local Rural FireService, the Police, and teachers from the school, were amongst our villagecommunity members.

The RSL Youth Choir were a delight tolisten to and watch, and their Director, O. J. Rushton certainly should be proud oftheir performance.

The BBQ breakfast supplied and cookedby Bunnings staff was very welcome as thetummies began to rumble, and thetraditional Anzac biscuits and lamingtonswith a nice hot cuppa filled the cockles.

ANZAC DAY REMEMBEREDOn return to school for Term 2, the

children gathered in the hall to learn of

Anzac Day and remember the fallen.John Stead addressed the school withhis stories of the Vietnam war, with bothfactual accounts of daily life and photosof aircraft.

Afterwards the children recessed tothe playground and inspected RobertEllis’s WW2 jeep, with lots of horn

blowing by the occupants of the driversseat and spinouts by future rally drivers. The army helmet was rather large for thesmall heads, but all lined-up to try it on.

GARDEN TIPS with George

We in the cooler areas of Australia areblessed with the beautiful autumndeciduous trees that splash vivid coloursof red and gold across the landscape. These plants are mainly native to the coldand temperate areas of the NorthernHemisphere and our climate here in theHighlands seems to suit their needs havingfour distinctive seasons. Winter with noleaves, spring with new growth and softtender leaves, summer with a full cover ofmature leaves and autumn when the leaveslose their vigour and slowly die on the treegiving the colour that they were planted for.

But the glory of the autumn season isforgotten when it is time to dispose of allthat foliage. Some take advantage of thegreen lidded bin, others burn a pile ofleaves and spread the ashes, but by far themost eco-friendly method is to incorporatethem into the compost as those deadleaves are chock full of nutrients that thetree roots have deposited into the growingtissue, during the spring and summer.

To the gardener this is a good source oftrace elements as well as the morecommon nutrients such as phosphorusand potash, but only in small amounts. Iusually add organic fertiliser as well as agood layer of compost before planting agarden bed. Those dead leaves are ablessing.

Just keep on raking everyone ‘til nexttime. George.
