West Indies– Harvested sugar
– Brutal conditions
– High mortality
– Cheaper to buy new slaves than care for existing ones
– Worked to death
What are the geographic aspects of slavery?
South Carolina– Harvested rice
– Almost as brutal as West Indies
– Better taken care of
Chesapeake– Harvested tobacco
– Work wasn’t as hard
– Climate wasn’t as harsh
– Because tobacco profits were less, masters bred slaves
Slave culture in America
Whites preferred slaves from different tribes
Eventually created common language (English and/or Creole)
Due to lower mortality in Chesapeake, culture stronger
Some kept traditional African religions, some converted to Christianity
