Designing for a Double LifeSpectacle + Resource

    STRATEGY | Rotate circulation loop

    SITE| Beijing, China

In the past, architectural icons used to refer buildings that speak in a single-voice about their special values such as the authority of government, power ofmodern capitalism, or regional culture. Today, placeless and fetishized icons of international events are facing physical and nancial ruins due to the lack ofconsideration about the post-occupancy. This proposal focuses on re-envisioning history of Olympic spectacle that is eligible of speaking double-voice to localand international audiences.

The critical hypothesis is, if Beijing Olympic stadium is re-designed from the beginning stage as a dual purposed one for the Olympics and another for localusage venue, both programs will operate simultaneously to display an Olympic spectacle that accommodate spaces for local and international audiences. Foralmost every Olympics, whether it is held in Eastern Asia or Western Europe, signicant number of local residents face forced eviction from their houses andstores with the governments attempt to improve city; During the preparation for Beijing Olympics, almost two million C hinese were forced to displace.

Fundamental constraints of this thesis are visibility, movement, and dual program. In this mini-project, one of the major constrains, circulation, is inverted toirrationalize the linear and conventional circulation and free the pre-made route. By rotating the circulation around the center and re-stacking the housing stairsto mimic the modied loop pathway, the new stadium typology will introduce the evolving inhabitation and spectatorship.
