Slug Soup Stays on the Front Burner of Summer Fun

This year marked the 18th offering of CAP’s summer art day camp for kids, and there were 91 young artists who joined us in June for the week-long program! Only once in the distant past did that many attend, so we are all happy to know that Slug Soup is withstanding the test of time. It was a week of diverse artmaking, including some returning favorites like drawing, painting, and print-making, as well as some new offerings such as creating sock monkeys, encaustic mixed media pieces, mosaic gar-den ornaments, treasure maps, and hand-made pin-hole cameras and photos. Many students had the opportuni-ty to make their marks with unusual tools - fruit, leaves, shoes, spray bottles, potato mashers, shaving cream, sponges, and straws. Art can happen without a brush! Many thanks to all the sponsors, donors, volunteers, instructors, and student assistants who contributed their resources and many talents toward another successful, fun-filled, and memorable week.

Nesko Women’s Club Members Get an Art Lit Lesson

Kim Cavatorta was guest speaker at a Nesko Women’s Club meeting this past spring. Club members learned about Community Arts Project programs and then became students in an abbreviated Art Literacy lesson. After seeing the PowerPoint presentation on Australian Aboriginal Art, participants courageously jumped into artmaking with brown paper, a dowel, and tempera paint. Dip-ping the dowel in natural colors that the ancient Aboriginals used, they created vibrantly-colored salmon designs and went home with some new knowledge and a beautiful new creation. Nesko Women’s Club is a service group in South Tillamook County that has the annual book and bake sale on July 4th in Neskowin and organizes the South County Christmas baskets. They are also generous contributors to CAP’s Art Literacy Program. Thanks, Friends!

Art Literacy Program Inspires the Imaginative Process

Nestucca Valley Elementary School and Garibaldi Grade School continued this past school year into their 12th and 9th years of Art Literacy instruction, respectively. The three CAP Art Literacy instructors, Tami Waldron, Nicola Harrison, and Kim Cavatorta, worked effectively as a team to plan and present seven in-depth art lessons to over 400 students in the two schools. The year also marked the beginning of a CAP pre-school Art Literacy Pro-gram at Cedar Creek Child Care Center in Hebo (taught by Nicola). It’s such an honor to be welcomed into these schools and have the opportunity to work with their students. We all learn so much from them! The Art Literacy Program presents a 90-minute lesson in each classroom each month. The lesson focuses on a particular artist or art movement and includes the historical context, a discussion of the meaning of the sub-ject artwork and techniques used, and a hands-on project that enables students to make their own work in the style of the featured artist(s). Here are some pics of our Art Lit kids and their work.

Port Storage Lends a Generous Hand

Many thanks to business owners Vicki and Bill Goodman for donating storage space to CAP at the Port Storage Cloverdale site. It is a great help to be able to securely store large items like signs, display grids, art buckets, tarps, and other equipment and supplies (Kim’s office is reaching maximum capacity!). Thanks for the great support, Bill and Vicki!

School Fundraiser a Hit with Parents

In March, families purchased products featuring student artwork as part of a fundraising effort for the Art Literacy programs at Nestucca and Garibaldi. The Original Works company created key rings, aprons, mugs, computer pads, etc., from original artwork done by students during the February Art Lit lesson. Watch for info about another such sale in spring of 2014!

Grants Help CAP During Transition

Community Arts Project is very pleased to announce that several generous foundations (many of them local) have helped CAP fund its Art Literacy Program and organizational operations this past year. As you may remember, last year CAP discontinued one of its main fundraising events, the North Coast Seafood Festival, after retirement of the two dedicated volunteer event coordinators. Loss of festival revenue meant alternative financial resources had to be sought to continue to fund CAP’s Art Literacy Program in local schools. This program is offered during the school day at no charge to the schools or students so that every student can participate without regard to family income or transportation availability (both Nestucca Valley Elementary and Garibaldi Grade School do make contributions to their respective programs, as resources al-low). While CAP continues to work to replace lost revenue over the long term, it wishes to express sincere gratitude to the following foundations for their support during the transition:

Watt Brothers Scholars Trust - Located in Bay City, this trust has been more than generous with CAP over the years. This last year, they awarded CAP a $5,000 grant to be used for the Art Literacy Program and/or general support. Mudd Nick Foundation - A Manzanita-North County organization, Mudd Nicks contributed $2,000 to the Garibaldi Grade School Art Literacy Program for the school year 2012-13. Tillamook County Cultural Coalition (TCCC) - The county-wide distributor of Oregon Cultural Trust funds, TCCC granted CAP $1,600 for support of its Art Literacy Program during 2013. Microsoft - Through the intermediary on-line non-profit advocate Tech Soup, Microsoft Corporation contributed new software that will support all of CAP’s office functions, including the establishment of a much-needed donor database. Neskowin Community Association - Assistance in the amount of $250 was generously granted to CAP in support of its programs. Nesko Women’s Club - Assistance in the amount of $200 was generously contributed to the CAP Art Literacy Program.

Our thanks to these foundations for their trust and for their shared commitment to learning and ex-perimenting in the arts. Their help is both an inspiration and a confirmation!

So, How is CAP Doing?

You may wonder with the transition mentioned above … how is CAP doing financially these days? CAP Income: We’re so happy to report continued support from our generous individual, business, and organi-zational donors and sponsors. They have always been the lifeblood of our organization and we are so grateful. Based on a $48,000 budget for 2012, donors/sponsors made up 54%! The remaining income came from events, grants, and Slug Soup tuition. CAP Expenses: We value those individuals who form the core of our services ... our teaching staff. We believe in compensating them with a fair wage in exchange for the outstanding level of instruction they provide. Instruction and materials made up about 57% of CAP’s 2012 expenses. The remaining expenses went to events, operations, and administration (including the Executive Director’s salary). Bottom Line: CAP’s year-end 2012 bottom line showed a modest excess of expenses over income, less than we anticipated given the loss of a major fundraising event. The new year, however, has brought encouraging respons-es from foundations and our loyal donor base. CAP’s board and staff remain optimistic that 2013 will finish on target. Stay tuned for some new events and other ways you can help CAP in the near future. Thanks to all for your support!

Full STEAM Ahead! Briefly ... from Kim Cavatorta

I was listening to the radio today to a report on STEAM, which is the new twist on an acronym for what some leading thinkers are labeling the most important aspects of the national agenda on education and re-search: Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Math (others refer to just STEM .. see what is missing?). John Maeda, artist, programmer, and now President of Rhode Island School of Design, and his colleagues are leading the STEAM movement. In Maeda’s words, “Amidst all the attention given to the sciences as to how they can lead to the cure of all diseases and daily problems of mankind, I believe that the biggest breakthrough will be the re-alization [of] the arts … as the whole reason why we ever try to live longer or live more prosperously. The arts are the science of enjoying life.” We at CAP couldn’t agree more.

Garibaldi Grade School Celebrates Young Artists

Parents, teachers, staff, family, and friends gathered on May 23 for the annual Art Night at Garibaldi Grade School. It was a celebration of student artists and all the artwork they created in the CAP Art Literacy Program during the school year. Those who came were served appetizers while they admired artwork in all the hallways, cafeteria, and gym. A silent auction of student-created items generated funds for the program, and such a delightful collection of items they were! Birdhouses, dog beds, mirrors, a chess table, a mosaic stepping stone, and more. The dinner that followed was sponsored by Mudd Nick Foundation. Thank you to the Mudd Nicks and to all who worked so hard to make the event a success!

Your Heart’s Desire - A Day (and a Night!) to Remember

On February 9, more than 150 people gathered at the Kiawanda Community Center in Pacific City to celebrate art, wine, and chocolate, and to support CAP’s Art Literacy Program in local schools. Your Heart’s Desire, CAP’s annual fundraising event, was a rousing success! A steady flow of art buyers and admirers filled the Great Hall Saturday after-noon, which was a time when the event was free and open to the public. Many came early in the day to have their pick of the unique art that was for sale. Local profes-sional artists again created works for sale on 12”x12” and 6”x6” panels, this year each piece reflecting the artist’s response to the theme “Community.” A variety of art me-diums were represented and the subjects included a wide range of interpretations of the theme: nature communities, human communities, places where the community gathers, objects together in still life, to name only a few. It was definitely a collection of one-of-a-kind art and knowing purchasers snatched them up! Artistically created student greeting cards and Valentines were also greeted by enthusiastic buyers. The evening chocolate and wine party got underway at 6:30pm, the excite-ment of the evening ushered in by the soft tones of Past Forward, a jazz group from Newport, OR. While folks danced and enjoyed the wine, beer, and culinary treats (chocolate!), others perused the student art display, bid on the many inviting silent auction items, took chances on the Evening Out in Portland raffle package, and en-joyed the festive time together. There are so many individuals, businesses, and organizations who lent a hand in generous and helpful ways. Donors, volunteers, artists, musicians, silent auc-tion and raffle contributors, food and beverage donors - too many to list here - all who have CAP’s appreciation and gratitude. Very special thanks from CAP go to those who were major sponsors of the event: Cape Kiwanda RV Resort, Inc., Pelican Pub and Brewery, Seufert Winery, Twist Wine Company, Tillamook Headlight-Herald, Rosenberg Builders Supply, American Easel, LLC, Kiawanda Community Center, Pacific City Sun, Shorepine Vacation Rentals, Sportman’s Pub-n-Grub, Tillamook Vision Center, TLC Federal Credit Union, Village Merchants, Fred Meyer Tillamook, and Nestucca Ridge Storage.

Did you know? Some of the beautiful art pieces created for Your Heart’s Desire are on display and for sale at Stimulus Espresso Café in Pacific City. Stop in to see them - maybe you’ll have to take one home!
