The show was held at the St. Peters Cultural Arts Center, now in St. Peters City Hall, from August 20 to October 8, 2011. Although the new location had less wall space for our exhibition, requiring entries to be limited to 2 per artist, it has a lot of public traffic which we hoped would bring more sales. We had 67 artists exhibiting 118 paintings. Robert Lee Mejer, Professor of Art and Division of Fine Arts Chair, Quincy University, Quincy, Illinois since 1968, was our judge this year and had the following statement to our membership on the show: I commend the artists for making this exhibition possible, a brave and a generous act. We must continue the search and support the arts and those who civilize society-give us beauty, insights, provoke our thoughts, mirror our times and enrich our lives. It is reassuring that so many of you are involved with pursuing the noblest form of human expression called ART. As often is the case with judged exhibitions another judge(s), another time might mean different results in the awards selection... This is the judging process that we as artists have come to know and live with. At the Zagotta workshop good information was found that might be helpful to give a boost to your creative juices.

This workshop dealt with design. Zagotta’s Zagotta’s Zagotta’s Zagotta’s points about design:points about design:points about design:points about design: The Key to creative and personal paintings is design. A strong abstract begins with abstract “seeing.” Abstract seeing begins with shape. It is crucial to be able to look at an object, but see its shape. Compositions are put together with shapes, not with objects, not with drawings. Contour drawings are helpful for translating subjects into two-dimensional shapes. Use “L”-shape croppers on your drawing or reference photo and eliminate everything that is not important to your “story.” Create puzzle-like compositions of positive and negative shapes. Complete the painting’s composition by creating an exciting light/dark value pattern.

Zagotta’s points to ponder:Zagotta’s points to ponder:Zagotta’s points to ponder:Zagotta’s points to ponder: The further away from representation a painting moves, the less it becomes about a subject and the more it becomes about the language of design. The further away from representation a painting moves, the more personal and creative it becomes. The further away from representation a painting moves, the less it becomes about the subject and the more it becomes about you, the artist. A subject is a good starting point — it is not the destination. Ignore details and focus on shape, value, color, line and texture. Save the details for

the icing. “Always remember that what you are painting is more important than the subject that inspired it.” Ed Betts “Take risks, creativity is born in frustration.” Dan McCaw “Never cease from exploration and the end of all our exploring will be to arrive where we began and to know the place for the first time.” T.S. Elliot “Who you are is found in what you love.” Donna Zagotta

Lee Walter was fascinated by Jean Gastorf’s book, Pouring Light, Layering Transparent Watercolor, and then took her workshop in St. Louis, but was very frustrated and didn’t feel like she got the pouring technique down.

When she wanted to do a painting for her oldest son’s special second grade teacher, who was also a bee keeper, she did a composition of bees in a beehive and wondered how she would execute such a complicated painting. Pouring came to mind as it allowed layering. This endeavor led to her trying pouring again and perfecting her technique.

In the past, Lee always rushed into her painting; however, with pouring and layering a really good value study is required. Lee uses 140 lb. Arches paper which she preps by wetting it in the sink, stapling it to Gatorboard, covering the staples with artist tape, and letting it dry. Foam core can be used but it will buckle in large sizes. The board must be light so you can manipulate it as you pour your paint.

Lee demonstrated the 5 steps used to complete a painting by using the same composition of a lighthouse in the 5 stages of the process.

First Lee transfers her composition to her watercolor paper with a pencil. Then she uses Incredible White Mask Liquid Friskit to preserve all light values. Lee prefers this mask because it dries clear and comes off her paper even after being left on for 2 weeks. She applies the masking fluid with a cheap brush that she dips in water and draws across bar soap first so the masking fluid won’t dry too fast. Lee lets the masking fluid dry completely.

Next she wets her entire paper with a spray water bottle and then pours her first wash of color on the paper using a plastic tub to catch the excess runoff. She continues pouring other colors and tilts the paper on the

board to achieve interesting patterns of paint and to cover the area she is focusing on. Lee uses Cheap Joe’s American Journey watercolors because they are reasonably priced. You use too much paint with pouring to use expensive paints. She dilutes the paint with water in small plastic cups, deciding how much water to use based on how dark she wants her colors to be. She used Cheap Joe’s blue, bumblebee yellow and rambling rose for the demo. After the first wash is applied, Lee wipes all the excess paint off the edges of the painting and the drips on masked areas. Don’t shortcut this step as leaving drips will cause trouble later. At this point the painting has to be allowed to dry completely.

Next Lee applies more masking fluid over everything she wants to preserve. She lets the fluid dry completely, then rewets the whole painting again with her spray bottle. Using more saturated color on the second pour, she applies her next wash, letting the paint run, tilting the board to work the paint and cover the paper. Again, you clean up all the excess paint along the edges and on masked areas, then let everything dry completely.

Lee continue these steps until she has poured two more washes and on the last wash she pours really good darks using Indigo and Vandyke Brown. She also uses a brush to darken areas or to pull color out in spots, and adds more paint to her cups if she wants to darken colors and pour more washes while the paper is still wet.

When Lee finishes all the masking and pouring steps, she cleans everything up thoroughly with a paper towel and lets everything dry completely. She removes all masking with a removal tool. She calls this portion of the process the reveal. She rubs the painting with clean hands to find all little bits of masking at the end.

Finally, Lee checks the painting and adds final touches with brush work. Using the Munsell color wheel she finds contrasting colors to use for pop and does a wash over pure white areas to soften the edges. Fascinating!
