What do Russell Simmons, Shepard Fairey, and J ay-Z,have in common, besides being some of the mostrespected, influential people in the world? They feltthe need to come together to represent their art forthe sake of this book. The objective of the project is toshowcase the art behind the lyrics of hip-hop in juxta-position to similar themes in contemporary art, to en-courage readers to consider the meaning and valuebehind these works and themes at large. It celebratesthe long-standing relationship between the visual artsand hip-hop music, and is the result of a collaborationbetween two giants of the American music scene.Eac h chapter of the book has a theme: for example,

the chapter about New York is titled “Empire State ofMind” after J ay-Z’s epic single, which peaked withinthe top ten in ten countries in 2009. Lyrics from thesong are presented beside contemporary art inspiredby New York, an exclusive commentary from Russelland Danny Simmons, and a contextualizing text fromlegendary writer and activist Nikki Giovanni, as well asother academics.      This illuminating exposé on a dark chapter of Amer-ican history tells how the flourishing German culture

in the United States was wiped out by a fury ofanti-German hysteria during World War I. Americanpatriots eradicated the German language fromschools, churches, and newspapers. Germans, once America’s biggest, proudest, and most suc-cessful ethnic group were targets of hate, persecu-tion, and even lynchings and vigilante hangings.German c ooks were burned, newspapers wereclosed, and sauerkraut was renamed “libertycabbage”—the “freedom fries” of modern times.

Never before or after have the horrors of the “GreatWar,” as World War I was known, been captured

as they were by Kurt Tucholsky. The famed Weimarwriter, who would become one of Germany’s best-known satirists and journalists, describes surviving in thetrenches and fighting a losing battle, the arroganceof the of ficers, and the desperation of the loved onesback home. His writings are similar to those of HeinrichHeine, his role model, in appearing superficially simplebut replete with hidden meanings. They are touching, stirring, and prec isely to the point. He makes the warthat still looms even into our own 21st century comealive. This is the first bilingual anthology in German andin English of his works on World War I. This edition fea-tures an afterword by Noah Isenberg, professor andchair of culture and media at Eugene Lang C ollege—

With provocative insights on every page and newlanguage for the heady, raw experience of being

alive, these poems focus their gaze on the existen-tial dilemma of how one finds meaning in a fallenworld. They loc ate themselves in the detritus ofmodern, consumer life, finding redemption andspiritual sustenance in a landscape beyond words.

The poet is more than accomplished; he is simplysplendid, and his work offers hope while strippingaway the world’s disguises, revealing the stable, comforting, agreeable ground of living in thepresent moment. This is nourishment for the“smoky crevices of the heart.”

“Buddhist thoug h he may be, Sig man Byrd doesn’t

use the poems in this remarkable collec tion todemonstrate sublime detac hment . . . Whatever g littering objec ts the world dang les before us, dis-traction is a kind of stupor, he argues. And so, evenas the title of this terri   fic collec tion calls on itself andthe reader to wake up, Byrd keeps on poking us,

poking ag ain and ag ain, with poems full of urg en-cy, liveliness, and g ood, mordant humor.”

—Katharine C oles, author, The Earth Is Not Flat

“Wake Up, Sleepwalker is a book of paradoxesthat work in perfec t harmony. Sig man Byrd’s poemshave energ y and g race, hig h wit and low humor,

heady thoughts and common sundries, as well astrouble and troublemakers, inc luding that make r ofall thing s, the G reat Troublemaker Himself. Ric hlytextured and smartly perc eived, Wake Up, Sleep-walker is a moving and dazzling collec tion.”  —John Skoy les, author, Secret Frequencies

Three experts collaborate in this passionate andrewarding dialogue on the legacy of the greatAmerican philosopher and educator John Dewey(1859–1952). Focused on growth and the creationof value within the context of real life, Dewey’spragmatic philosophy shares much with humanisticBuddhism. These similarities, which arise through-out the book, add richness to a dialogue alreadyoverflowing with faith in our capacity to find com-mon ground and expand human well-being in ourrapidly globalizing world. For Dewey, individual and

soc ial potential alike are unlimited. Readers willcome away ready to embrace rather than fearthe increasing complexity of our world.

“Both Dewey scholars and initiates to his work willbe fasc inated by the discussion of connectionsbetween his ideas and those of Tsunesaburo Maki-

g uchi, the ‘value c reator.’ The c olleg ial relationshipthat both Dewey and Mak ig uchi desc ribed be-tween mentor and disc iple (teacher and student)is espec ially valuable in this ag e of dull, one-way ,authoritarian pedag og y. Readers will be encour-ag ed to renew e fforts to establish g enuine educa-tion in the United States and abroad.”

It includes a message forparents and teachers from the Areyvut Project, anonprofit organization dedicated to infusing youthand teens with the core J ewish values of kindness, charity, and social action.

“The book handles Jewish dive rsity in simple termswithout being overly didac tic and teaches childrenabout the beauty of being part of a diverse c om-munity and, in spite of the differences, we continueto be part of one big family. I love the messag e of

respec ting , embrac ing and celebrating our differ-ences rather than judg ing and rejec ting them. Theillustrations are eng ag ing and enhance the text. This book is de  finitely one parents and teac hers willenjoy reading to children.” —Sylvia Rouss, author,

Curly Curly is different than her siblings. They all havestraight hair but she has curly hair. When their parentsgo shopping, Curly’s older siblings dec ide to see howCurly would look with short, straight hair. When theysee the results they feel sorry, but their mother teach-es them that sometimes sorry isn’t enough, empathyis important too and the fac t that a child has curlyhair is no reason to make him or her feel bad or thinkthat being different is wrong. The kids all learn theirlesson well and are happy when Curly’s hair comesback, curly.
