    SmartCAN Universal CANbusTowing Module

Interfaces directly to CAN - Identifies the vehicle it is fitted in

Enables activation of cars towing related functions

    **Has builtin caravan auxiliary function.

    Interfaces directly to CAN

The TF2302 towing module connects directly to the vehicles CANbus network. All the signal data to the towing

module comes from a direct connection to the vehicles CAN HI, CAN LO wires.

Identifies the vehicle in which it is fitted: dedicates itself

As soon as the module is connected and powered up, it analyses the data the car is sending, recognises the vehicle it

is in, dedicates itself to that vehicle and applies the correct codes.

Enables activation of cars towing related functions

When the vehicle requires data from the towing module to activate towingrelated functions, the smart module

    sends it.

    **Caravan auxiliary function.

The SmartCAN module has a CANactivated 12S function to control caravan auxiliary circuits. Two switched 12S

outputs on the module are activated when the CAN detects that the engine is running.

The diagram below shows the module and the short loom.

Introduction to the module12-pin connector: pin designations are shown in the diagram on the previous page.

The short loom that mates with this socket carries the following circuits:

CAN HI and CAN LO: From Pins 5 and 6, a blue/black. wire and a red/yellow wire.

The blue/black wire is CAN HI and the red/yellow wire is CAN LO. Each has a butt connector

    attached.

You need grey two-core data cable* to connect to CAN in the vehicle.

(*This cable is available in 50M coils from Ryder Towing. If you have bought the SmartCAN module as part of a complete kit,

the kit should contain a 5.5 metre coil of data cable.)

    C2: Pink

This wire is a negative switch for an external C2 trailer flasher warning lamp or buzzer. There is no

buzzer on board the module. Connect one end of the buzzer/lamp to live and the other to this wire.

Hard (analogue) brake input* Green/white single unterminated wire.

Some cars do not have brake lights on the CAN so a hard brake connection is required. Also, it is

common for a belt and braces approach to be used, with the hard brake connection made even

if there is a brake function on the cars CANbus system. The brake signal has to be picked up from a

feed that supplies a single function bulb. not from a modulated feed that operates both the brake

light and sidelight (otherwise the trailer brakes will come on with the sidelights).

    Earth: White single unterminated wire:

This is the earth for the module only. Earth to the chassis

6 outputs to the trailer socket.

Yellow, blue, green, brown, red, black and yellow/white. Fit a prewired trailer socket (7-pin or 13-pin) in the normal way, thread the cable into the car and connect the socket wires to the

corresponding colours on the short loom. Connect the trailer reverse light wire to yellow/white on

    the short loom.

    5-way screw terminal block

This block carries 12N and 12S power inputs and two switched caravan auxiliary outputs:

Pin 1: 12V input for trailer light outputs. Protect with a 15 amp fuse, close to power source.

Pin 2: 12V input for caravan auxiliary outputs. Protect with a 15 amp fuse close to the power source.

Pin 3: 12V input for caravan auxiliary outputs. Protect with a 15 amp fuse close to the power source.

Pin 4: Switched 12V output CAN controlled

    Self-crimp option.

Connecting wires are brought directly to the plug. Using the

crimp tool* (TT7702) the crimp terminals are attached to

the wires and pushed into the correct cells in the housing.

The map of cell allocations is printed on the top of the

module. (*To ensure good, gas-tight connections, use of the

    correct crimp tool is essential.)

    Simple and cost-effective

This is the simplest and most cost-effective option, with the

fewest connections within the system. The housing and

crimps (WT2121HC) cost well under a pound.

    Easy

The special crimp tool is easy to use and used with care,

    virtually guarantees high-quality connections.

    Long loom option

WT2121 Full 7-core loom, 2 metres: 12-way plug with 2 metres of 7-core cable, 5.5 metres of twisted data cable

plus earth, hard brake and C2 cables. Trailer socket not connected.

FITTING PROCEDUREDisconnecting the battery: If you do disconnect the battery, make sure the ignition is switched off before you

disconnect. Only disconnect for the shortest possible time.

Refer to Practical Guide atwww.rydertowing.co.ukfor general fitting information.

Details for all cars of where to connect and details of the CAN interface are given on the master sheet in later pages, and on the

car- specific sheets (SmartCAN Data) available in CarData at www.rydertowing.co.uk.

Install all components, including connecting the module to the trailer cable(s). If you decide to

disconnect the battery, do so now.

Make your connections to Can HI and CAN LO. The HI and LO wires are always a twisted pair. If the

instruction refers you to a connector or OBD2, connect to the wires leading to the specified pins.

Cut a suitable length of the grey two-core data cable and connect one end to the red/yellow and

blue/black CAN wires in the short loom, red to red/yellow and black to blue/black.

Connect the other end to the vehicle CAN wires: red to CAN HI, black to CAN LO.

NOTE: The connections to CAN HI and CAN LO have to be excellent, and soldering is not

recommended because of potential heat transfer to sensitive circuits in the car, so each

kit includes a SuperSplice connector. We strongly recommend its use for this interface.

Connect both power inputs to the power source but do not fit the fuses. If you have

disconnected the battery, reconnect it now.

    Switch on the ignition.

Insert the fuses that protect the module and test the installation.

If you have connected the wrong way round to CAN HI / CAN LO, you will not damage the vehicle or the unit, but the

module will not work. The LED in the module will flash in the sequence: 3 rapid - pause/3 rapid - pause, etc. In this

case, simply reverse your connections to HI and LO.

    The correct flash sequence is:

o REGULAR 1 SECONDlocked on and working

    Error sequences are:

o NONENo CAN detected or asleep

    o STEADYIncompatible with vehicle

    o 3 RAPID - PAUSE/3 RAPID - PAUSE, etcCAN wires reversed.

Overload protection: As well as the fuse protection you put on the input cables, the module has on board protection against

overloadsit will shut down any lighting circuit that shorts, etc. In service, making this a very durable unit.

The SmartCAN module recognises the host vehicle: Data from all the vehicles on the application list is programmed into the

Smart module. Once fitted, the module recognises its host and becomes specific to that vehicle.

If the module sends trailer data back to the vehicle: Some vehicles automatically accept data back from the unit and alter some

functions when a trailer is connected. Some require a recode before they do this and others react partially without a recode,

adding new functions when they have been recoded. Recode information is given on the car-specific sheets.

Generic instruction sheets and Car-specific pages: The following pages list all vehicles currently covered and give concise fitting

instructions for each. Car-specific pages can be downloaded as a PDF file fromwww.rydertowing.co.uk.

OBD II: In some cases, the CAN connection is found on the cars diagnostic socket (OBDII)

OBD II(On-board diagnostic) data link connectors (DLC) are the international standard for the diagnostic interface. They have to

be within easy reach of the drivers seat, sometimes in the centre console, sometimes under the dash. Two of the pins are CAN

HI, CAN LO and these are listed in the data chart in these

    instructions.

The images on the right show what an OBD II connector looks like.

will flash rapidly three times, pause, flashagain, etc.

Just reverse the CAN connecions you havemade. When the module recognises the

vehicle and starts working, the LED will flashonce every second. If the module does not

recognise the vehicle, either the LED will lightconstantly or nothing will happen.

Trailer Stability ProgramIf TSP is available, the module will enable it to

be activated, either automatically or byrecoding, according to the vehicle.
