Ball Joints on Tie Rod Ends Cause Noise While DrivingApplications: Audi A4, A6, A8, VW Passat, Skoda Superb (ref. no. 4B0 419 811 E)

The Problem:

The ball joints on the tie rod ends cause noise whilst driving.

The Cause:

The old design (ref. no. 4B0 419 811 E) failed prematurely due to overloaded joints. This reference is no longer fitted by Audi, VW or Skoda and has been replaced.

The Solution:

febi’s tie rod end - febi no. 22044 (ref. no. 8E0 419 811 B) - features:

- Larger diameter (25mm vs 22mm) to increase load carrying capacity (Fig 1)

- Sturdier body (Fig 2)

- Snap ring replaced by a flange to protect rubber boot (Fig 3)

Important:

With the new design, the rubber remains in the body (Fig 4) to ensure comfortable driving and prevent high frequency vibrations being transferred to other parts.

Attention:

The use of unsuitable tools can cause premature failure of the joints. Please pay attention to the special requirements of the 4-joint-axle, in which the items are applied. Always follow the manufacturers’ installation instructions!

Mechanical/Electrical Power Steering Pumps - Fitting Guidelines for the Installer

Replacement Unit

Check ‘new’ unit has same number of bolt holes and centres match unit being replaced (Fig 1). Angle of flow and return pipes on new unit must match identically with old unit (Fig 1).

Position of pulley on shaft must match unit being replaced (Fig 2).

System must be flushed to ensure no contamination is left to damage seals in replacement unit. AMK recommend Wynn’s Flushing Machine.

Fitting Inspection

The pulley on the replacement unit is in line with all the other pulleys i.e. water pump, alternator, crankshaft, if not, do not refit the belts (Fig 2).

Care should be taken to ensure pipe connection unions do not become cross-threaded when reconnecting unit (Fig 3).

Before Road Testing

Once installed, pump must be primed before fitting drive belts to avoid damage to dry pump on start-up.

The system must be bled to extract all air prior to lowering wheels on to the ground and road testing.

Introduced during the 1970s to retain vehicle control under extreme

braking conditions, ABS (anti-lock braking systems) have come a long way. Benefiting from general automotive electro-mechanical developments, their importance has increased as now they are used for vehicle stability, traction control, speedometer, cruise control and even navigation systems.Initially used in top end luxury cars, ABS is almost universal now and even base line vehicles have them as standard. The market potential for the specialist is huge.

ABS sensors operate pretty much as any other automotive speed sensor (cam/crank, gearbox etc). They tend to be fitted at the wheel and are subject to road debris, water, salt and corrosion, not ideal conditions for electronic component life expectancy. However ABS sensor misdiagnosis is as common with ABS sensors as it is with EMS (engine management systems).

ABS Wheel Speed Sensor Function

Wheel speed sensors measure road-wheel speed and direction. The information they generate is used for ABS, traction control (TCS) or vehicle stability (ASP) systems to prevent the vehicle’s wheels from locking or spinning. They increase the driver’s control of the vehicle.

How They Work

There are two basic wheel speed sensor types: passive and active.

Passive sensors

Similar in operation to Inductive cam/crank sensors, they consist of a soft iron, permanent magnetic pin around which is wound a fine copper wire coil. The unit is fitted close to a rotating trigger wheel which

is mounted onto a rotating assembly, such as the disc, drum or hub. When the trigger-wheel rotates past the pick-up assembly the alternating teeth generate a small inductive voltage in the copper windings. This voltage signal is used by the ECU as wheel speed information.

Active sensors

Active sensors are like the Hall type sensor found in distributors, etc. The pick-up assembly has an in-built amplifier, which relies on a supply voltage (normally 5v, can be 12v).

The rotating element is a multi-pole (north, south, north, south, etc) magnetic ring, which can be located onto a rotating assembly as with the passive sensor. Increasingly, active sensors are incorporated into the wheel bearing seal and use magnetic powder instead of fixed magnets.

The rotating, alternating, magnetic poles generate a magnetic flux within the sensor element which amplifies and regulates the signal for the ECU to use as wheel speed information.

Caution is required when fitting active sensor wheel bearings as they can be installed backwards rendering the sensor inoperative. Pay particular

attention to the instructions enclosed with this type of sensor!

Note that some manufacturers use active sensors with built-in aerials, for radio transmission of information to the ECU.

Differences between active & passive sensors

Active sensors give a digital output with a square wave signal. Passive sensors give a sine wave signal.

Active sensors are capable of sending wheel speed information down to 0mph. Passive sensor accuracy declines below 25mph.

Active sensors generally have three wires; one power supply, one signal and one earth/shield. Passive usually have only two as they do not require a power supply.

Reasons for failure:

In common with most other automotive sensors, the principle cause of failure is the operational environment. Wheel speed sensors operate in harsh conditions, coping with extreme vibration, water, temperature fluctuations and dirt. Connecting wires are stressed by suspension and steering movements.

Testing

The principle tool in diagnosing ABS sensor failure is on-board diagnosis by the ECU. Failure of the sensor usually lights the dashboard ‘MIL’ (malfunction indicator lamp). The technician’s job is to pin-point the sensor that failed.

Most aftermarket code-readers in common use can access ABS sensor information. Although an invaluable time saver, code-reader information should be a guide, only, not treated as a definitive answer. Check the codes, then check the validity of the information with traditional diagnostic tools. Never renew a sensor purely from fault code information.

Speed sensors are as easy to test as their EMS counterparts. Start with basics. A fault could be caused by something as simple as the incorrect size/profile tyre being fitted. Check whether the correct type of sensor is fitted.

Once a suspect sensor has been identified start with a visual check for corrosion, physical damage (including sensor air gap) and connection problems. Check the sensor statically i.e. resistance checks, then check dynamically by spinning the wheel and measuring output, ideally with an oscilloscope to check for correct wave shape. Passive sensors can be disconnected and tested as a ‘stand-alone’ unit. Active sensors, due to their required voltage input, have to be connected with the ignition on when testing. If all is well, check feeds back to the ECU, specifically earths.

There are many ‘problem’ vehicles but BMWs deserve particular mention. Issues include >92 cars suffering from poor quality rear ABS sensors (replacements are modified). Wiring harness damage in the 7 Series is caused by the tilt sensor behind the nearside rear wheel arch (reported by a fault code reader as rear ABS sensor fail). Also BMWs suffer from faulty ABS pump relays and rear ABS sensor earth faults. These all demand some lateral thinking before the fault can be identified.

Driving a car with poor brake pedal feel is scary. A light touch on the pedal stops the vehicle one moment, the next it takes slamming your foot down for the same result. Ferodo brakes offer great consistency - we can prove it.

SO WHAT IS PEDAL FEEL? AND HOW CAN CONSISTENT PEDAL FEEL HELP YOU?

‘Pedal feel’ is the product of pedal effort and pedal travel. ‘Pedal effort’ is the force needed to apply the brake pedal to get the car to slow down. ‘Pedal travel’ is the distance the brake pedal travels to activate the brakes.

Poor pedal feel leaves a driver uncertain of their brakes, dangerously out of control on the road. Safe, stable brakes should give a consistent pedal feel.

Safe braking is not just the ability to stop, but also the certainty that each time it will take the same pedal effort and pedal travel. Ferodo offers exactly this: great performance, plus excellent stability guaranteed.

THE TEST: The pedal feel of Ferodo brakes was tested against that of brakes from other major brands, both aftermarket-only suppliers and suppliers to VMs. Consistency of pedal effort and pedal travel were tested as brakes were applied 3 times at 4 different speeds (12 times in total) with constant deceleration of 0.3 g.

PEDAL EFFORT: Competitor brakes show a lot of variation in the amount of pedal effort needed to brake effectively.

MAX. VARIATION IN PEDAL EFFORT: Ferodo brakes clearly show the lowest maximum variation in required pedal effort. Ferodo offers the highest consistency, across different speed categories.

PEDAL TRAVEL: The distance (in mm) the brake pedal moved when the vehicle was braked to achieve the same deceleration of 0.3 g.

MAX. VARIATION IN PEDAL TRAVEL: Ferodo beats the competition hands-down, again showing the greatest consistency between applications across different speed categories: an almost imperceptible variation of only 2 mm!

THE RESULTS Ferodo beats the competition convincingly, again proving the safety and stability of Ferodo brake pads.
