CLAIMS

Patent EP1653825 The most flexible patent in Europe Smartcase|TecxSpecx™

[0027] Conventional mobile phones have an LCD display screenfor indicating dialled numbers and other information such asbattery and signal strength, such information may be displayed ona similar panel (not shown) located on the frame, or alternativelyby incorporated an screen, such as an LCD screen, into the lens.A simpler version may employ coloured LED’s arranged on theframe of the spectacles just within the field of view of the user. These provide a lower cost method of indicating a lack of signal orlow battery.

[0028] The spectacles have a rechargeable battery mounted inthe frame. In the present invention, the charging station used torecharge the battery is built into the carrying case for thespectacles. While it would be possible when using a case, a wirecould be used to establish a connection between the spectaclesand the charging circuit in the case, it is preferred to use aninductive loop to charge the battery in the spectacles without theneed for cumbersome connecting wires. The case derives its ownpower by a jack plug connection with a mains power source.

[0029] The carrying case or hard case has a container section andhinged a lid. In addition to serving as a means for recharging theinternal battery of the spectacles, it may act as the remote unit.Hence, the carrying case may comprise a mobile telephone. Forsuch features and others described in more detail below, the casewould require its own internal rechargeable power supply.

[0030] Where the spectacles incorporate a cellular phone, thecase may act as more than simply a charger. Modern cellular phoneshave many functions such as settings for ringing tones and volumes, calendars, diaries, calculators, and web access via WAP, GPRS, 3Gand other protocols. With such control over functionality, simplevoice control is not sufficient to enable access to all the features.

[0031] The case may provide access to these functions byinteracting with the spectacles, either by wire or more preferably, wireless communication. The case doubles as the carrier of manyof the functions of the phone and therefore is provided with meansfor data entry and retrieval. Such means may include a keyboardand a display screen (or touch screen), arranged convenientlyaround the inside of the container section.

[0032] The case can provide features not normally associated witha cellular phone. These include a GPS antenna and receiver, whichcombined with a database and software, can allow the user to findhis way whilst driving, or alternatively as a pedestrian trying tonavigate on foot around an unfamiliar city. This can be achievedby looking directly at the display in the case, or by viewing andlistening to whatever instructions are transmitted to thespectacles.

[0033] Further features may of course be employed such asinternet access via the case as well as the features of any PDA

(personal digital assistant) computer, with the added benefit thatany or all the information can be conveniently uploaded, ordisplayed via wireless communication with the spectacles.

[0034] With such hardware already in place, the case is capableof providing many more features, such as acting as a gamesconsole, or with provision of an aerial, and a suitable tuner, a radioor television. Equally with sufficient memory, either internal or inthe form of memory sticks, the case may be easily configured tofunction as a portable MP3 player, or any other format of music orvideo. Again, use of the spectacles conveniently enables thesefeatures to be employed silently through the ear piece, thereinavoiding offending surrounding people, yet conveniently withoutthe use of wires.

[0035] Similarly, the case may also be capable of playing footagetaken by camcorder or acting as a portable display screen to viewstill pictures taken from a remote digital camera. Alternatively thecase itself can serve as a self contained camera, already havingsuitable display and control means.

[0036]With the potential for this number of features, the case isa likely target for theft. It would therefore be prudent to includesecurity features. These could consist of the use of personalidentification numbers, or potentially finger print or retinalscanners.
