Our brief
As experts in meteorology,
hydrology and oceanography, we
promote efficiency, safety and
the environment in all aspects of
society.
We operate under the auspices
of the Swedish Ministry of the
Environment.
We are just over 500 employees
located at five sites and we
generate a turnover of about 65
million USD a year.

Products and services
for a weather-
dependent society
24 hours a day, every day of the
year, we supply forecasts and
decision-making data for
operations that are strongly
dependent on the weather.

We monitor our
planet’s behaviour
Continuous data collection gives
a good picture of the complex processes in the
atmosphere, in the oceans and on land. A large
number of fixed observation posts, 60 000/day,
are collected by SMHI..
A well-organised network of
observation posts with measuring stations for
collection of data is an absolute precondition
for making reliable forecasts (in Sweden about
1200)

Calculation models
– an increasingly clear
picture of reality
With know-how about the processes in
the atmosphere, the watercourses and
the oceans, we construct mathematical
models for forecasts, eco-monitoring
operations and climate simulations,
among other things.
