Everyone knows that stopping smoking is supposed to “be good” for you

however I will look at what can happen when you stop smoking especially for

long term smokers

Stopping Smoking Can Lead To Health Problems

Page 4: Smoking

I am going to look at what happens when someone gives up smoking.

Subject

Page 5: Smoking

I am going to look at how to stop, what help there is to stop and what you need to know when you plan to stop.

Subject

Page 6: Smoking

I am hoping to speak to people who think it is a romantic notion that smoking is still a cool thing to do.

Smoking is it still cool???

Page 7: Smoking

I am hoping to speak to people who think that smoking is certainly not cool and is indeed very harmful to you.

Smoking is not cool

I Hope To Interview Someone From The Following:

Ash Scotland The Anti Smoking Group

www.ashscotland.org.uk

A doctor or medical expert on the possible effects of long term smoking.

Stopping Smoking

Someone who runs a smoking cessation workshop

Someone who offers an alternative way to stop smoking

Someone who’s illness has been exacerbated by giving up smoking

Stopping Smoking

Page 10: Smoking

ANGLE The angle I am going for is when you decide you want to

stop smoking what can you do to help yourself stop.

Also to give information of the possible illnesses/problems

that may be encountered when giving up.

Why giving up should in the long run be beneficial to you

i.e. how maybe sleepless nights for a couple of days/weeks

is better then getting Cancer/Emphysema/Heart Disease.

Story Arc To start off by talking about giving up

smoking then go to what the possible side effects etc. are/could be and then what you can do to help yourself and where to go for assistance in stopping smoking.

◦Broadcasting of package.◦ Radio 1 Sunday Surgery 10pm◦ Steady Paced Package, Not too fast as to lose

the message and not too slow as to bore people.

◦ Possibly a female voice to present package as a male voice may sound to rough and may put people off whereas a softly spoken sounding voice may attract attention more.

As this is to be broadcast on BBC Radio 1 the target audience would be 15-29 year olds although this package could be played to pretty much any age but for the purposes of this unit it is the above.

Target Audience

After listening to some of the programmes I think this could work on this station and show.

Radio 1 Sunday Surgery

The Surgery with Aled (formerly known as the Sunday Surgery) is a British radio show that airs on BBC Radio 1 on Sunday evenings from 9-10pm hosted by Aled Haydn Jones and every week a special guest.[

Listeners are given advice to problems in certain areas of their life, mostly for common adolescent problems, and other listeners share their experiences and advice and are encourage to give their point of view. The format is similar to "problem pages" found in teenage magazines. The Surgery often has show specifically dedicated to one subject, such as a type of addictive behaviour or dependency. The Surgery has a team of experts on hand to deal with both medical, emotional and psychological problems including medical doctors Mel Sayer, and Stuart Flanagan and psychotherapist Dr. Aaron Balick. Music and SFX I do not think using music will be necessary

for this package although this may change.

I may use SFX maybe someone coughing violently or someone taking puffs of a cigarette or maybe a combination of both?

I do not foresee any problems/issues with any legalities.

I will ensure I get all interviewees permission to broadcast their voice.

Legalities

Page 21: Smoking

I need to ensure I am totally neutral and make this package without bias.

I need to ensure that I show fairness in my package

Ethics

Page 22: Smoking

A Voiceover Actor to come to the studio would attract minimum Equity Rates so if they are a tad too expensive maybe think about using ISDN for the actor to speak over?

As for the recording studio it is always an advantage if there is a sound engineer included in the price.

Costings

Page 23: Smoking

Obviously if you are doing all this as a freelance you need to be able to book a studio and a voiceover actor and also a zoom mic and mbox with protools (although audacity would work too) but obviously you would want to keep costs down where possible which is where Amazon and Play.com come in handy.
