“It is projected that we will see annual global tobacco-related deaths rise from 5 million to 10 million by 2020.” 1

Giving up cigarettes is one of the smartest, and most valuable decisions anyone can make.

Cigarette smoking is a major contributing factor to lung disease and several cancers, plus

a host of other serious health issues that can affect and even end a smoker’s life.

But quitting is much easier said than done. Most smokers have to make several

attempts at quitting before they finally succeed, partly because they don’t have

the resources and professional advice they need to break the habit.

Sykes Assistance Services and our partners know what it takes to quit.

Our CareCoach® program offers smoking cessation support available

24 hours, 7 days a week over 365 days a year via a toll-free

telephone number. Our programs are benchmarked and

supported by evidence-based clinical research and methods

that empower smokers to make smart health decisions

and achieve their smoke-free goal.

Ultimately, our CareCoach® program offers Canada’s

governments and employers a proven way to not only

reduce costs associated with smoking-related illnesses,

but help Canadians live longer, healthier, happier lives.

Healthier employees mean healthier businessesSmoking cessation programs are a smart investment for businesses. In general, smoking results in higher rates of worker absenteeism,

increased medical and insurance costs, and decreased job performance – all of which seriously impact the bottom line. By offering a

reliable smoking cessation program to employees, businesses can curtail those costs and build a more productive workforce.

Every business has unique needs, which is why we make our programs flexible and fully customizable. Our CareCoach® program

gives employees direct, 24/7 access to trained Cessation Counselors who can work with them from the time they are ready to quit

until they achieve a smoke-free life. In consultation with the medical community, we also deliver a variety of treatment options to

Easing the burden on our health care systemSmoking-related illnesses put tremendous pressure on Canada’s health

care system. Hospital visits, diagnoses, and treatments for these diseases

demand time and resources that cost taxpayers millions of dollars every

year. Reducing smoking means lowering that tax burden and directing

health care resources to other important areas.

Our CareCoach® Smoking Cessation program is available to governments

at all levels as a means of limiting smoking and its associated costs across

the country. We take a patient-centred approach, guiding each individual

smoker step-by-step through the quitting process to ensure the highest

chance of success. Along with Cessation Counselors, we also employ

registered nurses and other licensed medical professionals, and use

up-to-date evidence based resources.

“Smoking costs Canadians $9.5 billion each year including $2.68 billion in health care costs and $6.82 billion in lost productivity.” 2

“Over a quarter (29%) of the nearly 5 million people that currently smoke in Canada are interested in quitting.” 3

Planning for a fresh startSuccess in quitting depends on the smoker’s willingness to quit.

Our programs will help determine that willingness, establish the level of

addiction, and suggest appropriate methods and benchmarks (including an

official quit date) to help each client quit successfully. Quitting “cold turkey”

generally doesn’t work and can even be dangerous, so we approach

quitting as an extended process that involves several key steps.

Not all quitters come to us at the same level of preparedness. We build

each “Quit Plan” around the client’s readiness, whether he or she is just

thinking about quitting or has already taken action. From there, we outline

a specific strategy that will take the client to the next level and ultimately

to a successful break from smoking.

Our commitment doesn’t end after the final phone call. Our CareCoaches®

answer panic calls from an individual, their spouse or dependent where the

caller is in the midst of their quit plan and is tempted to relapse. In addition,

our CareCoach® support line remains open to provide clients with additional

help and support for as long as they need it to ensure success for a lifetime.
