How/When should you use this deck?
Field teams have had some recent success positioning our
stackable switches against HP competitors low-end directors.
However, this should NOT be your main sales focus. Use itas opportunity presents itself or perhaps as a reason to goback and talk to an HP partner or customer.
End user might be acandidate if
Needs port densityNeeds scalabilityNeeds performance
Needs modular convenienceANDare cost-sensitive
End user probably nota candidate if
Strict internal multi-protocol requirement Strict VSAN requirement Entrenched policy of deploying directors
Not particularly cost-sensitive
Incorporate one or two slides in your standard pitch. Mentioning that somecustomers can deploy the SN6000 as a Director alternative helps portray theSN6000 switch as an enterprise-class solution in manysituations.

Congratulations on your business growth!
Successful mid-size enterprises typically enter aphase where a higher port count SAN is required tomeet an expanding set of objectives & demands.
SAN infrastructure vendors will often suggest aDirector switch, which in the past has been the onlyreliable, manageable solution to maintainperformance and manageability at high port counts.
Unfortunately, Directors are very expensiveto purchase and own compared with theSN6000 solution. Director deployment canrepresent a significant portion of your IT departmentstotal budget.
Is a Director your only option?

Considering a Traditional Director?
Traditional directors offer lots of features Mainframe support (FICON)
Soup to nuts management platform
Redundant components
Modular convenience
Specialty blades
for a very high price Huge startup cost
Software cost/complexity Power consumption
FootprintIs it more than you need?

Why an SN6000 stackable solution may bebetter than a director!
50% or more lower start up costs and lower lifecycle costs
True end to end SAN management with HP StorageWorksSSCM enterprise software and HP StorageWorks EnterpriseFabric Management Suite (EFMS) software
Efficient scaling with stacking ports
Excellent port density
Efficient power usage
Simplified deployment and management
HP differentiation that makes you more competitive in SANdeals

General Comparisons (1)Requirement Entry-Level Director SN6000
Port Density Very poor at low port counts Huge footprint, whether or not you
need the ports
Excellent density at all port counts Does not consume rack space until you need
the ports
PowerConsumption
High, especiallyat low portcounts
Starts low, scales predictably withnetwork growth
Scalability 16 to 256 device ports per
chassis, depends on bladesize
Link multiple chassis for port counts >700 ports
16-, 32-, 48- or 64-port increments
120 device ports per stack
Link multiple stacks for port counts> 500 ports
8 port (4-port increments to 20) and 20-port more granular!
Transparent Router for investment protectionif addition to existing HP solution
Performance Excellent with smaller blades, larger blades areoversubscribed
4Gb or 8Gb backplane
Blade-to-blade traffic goes throughchassis ASICs (latency impact)
Excellent at all port counts inter-switch bandwidth expands asswitches are added
Auto-trunking 20Gb ISL backbone

Includes 8 Gbps optics 16 ports to over 256 ports, the director is always more expensive than the
SN6000 solution IBM $/port varies because of the chassis overhead coupled with blade
cost sweet spot is +200 ports (fully populated), BUT not as sweet as theSN6000 solution!
SN6000 $/port remains relatively constant at all port counts

Power consumption and heat dissipation of directors can be significant - especially at low port
counts. Per-port consumption gradually decreases until sweet spot at fully-populated chassis.SN6000 power consumption starts low and stays low, scaling predictably with the network.
SN6000 per-port numbers are similar to Director best-case but are achieved at every portcount.

Cant ANY Edge Switch be Used in this Way?
No the SN6000 is a unique solution. Other edge switches
do NOT have the same advantage verses Directors.
SN6000 provides the convenience, stability andperformance of a modular chassis switch without the cost overhead of a chassis!
EASY stacking architecture
Other edge switches require 3x the cable complexityfor ISLs (and 3x the optics to purchase) and they canNOT be managed as a single entity.
To achieve a similar performanceratio, non-stacking edge switcheswould have to dedicate over 1/3 oftheir ports for ISLs!
Exclusive 20Gb ISL bandwidth
Stacking port total
4 x 25.5 Gb = 102 GbOver 100Gb of bandwidth dedicated forswitch-to-switch connections. Plus, links
