This month please welcome Karen Price, who has some important information about the Quilt Show. Take it away, Karen!

IT’S SHOWTIME!!!!!! (ALMOST) Dear Quilters,

I asked Connie if I could do the President's Message this month. Please read this carefully.

After months of planning Quilt Show 2017 is almost here! The committee chairmen have graciously done their parts very well. We have door prizes and silent auction items, the raffle quilt is done and beautiful, our venue is rented and we have space to hang your beautiful quilts which need to be entered by January 30.

I have been told that you are fantastic about stepping up and covering all the volunteer opportunities at the actual show. At the January meeting, we will have the sign-up sheets for each station and you will get to choose the shifts that work best for you! I am asking that you sign up as early as possible so I don't have a heart attack!!!!!!! Your cooperation will be GREATLY appreciated.

Please work on your block contests, boutique items, enter and finish your quilts. If you are really ambitious, you can bake and freeze your cookies for the tearoom. You are such a fantastic group of quilters, I know that I can count on you.

Two ways to participate:

Appliqué Block Challenge – Must have an appliqué heart included.

Each block must be 9 ½ inches unfinished (will finish at 9 inches).

Blocks may be turned-in to Kimberly Howard any time up to the same day as quilt check-in which is Monday March 20, 2017.

Challenge packets will be available at the Guild meetings for $2.00 each and include a 10-inch square of the challenge fabric and instructions.

Loose Threads from the Vice President Happy New Year! I hope you all enjoyed your holidays and are

ready to do lots of fun quilting in the new year! Santa was very good to me…as always…and brought me some new templates from Fons & Porter as well as a nice gift certificate for fabric, so I’m looking forward to new quilting adventures. VP Challenge! Here’s a reminder about the EMPTY SPOOL CHALLENGE. If you haven’t started yet, please start saving ALL of your empty thread spools. Remember I’m not into rules so any type of spool you use….save it! This is a “challenge” not a competition -- there IS a difference -- so, if you already know someone who has 10 spools and you haven’t even gotten 1 empty yet, don’t worry. You’re still “in the game”. BTW I had a great question. Someone asked if the spools were going to be given away or swapped somehow during the challenge. Nope! You will keep your own spools so please feel free to use up thread from wooden spools or older spools. And remember….there are prizes!!! January Early Bird will be “Quick Valentines”

Our program will be “Creative Quilting for the Economically Frugal: Recycle, Reuse, Repurpose.” presented by Pam Traughber. Pam, a member of our guild, is a long time quilter who used to teach quilting in New York. February Early Bird will be “Fabric Folding” by Kimberly Maher. This is really fun and easy to do.

Our program will be “Ricky Tims’ Kaleidoscope” presented by Lea Hardee. If you are interested in presenting an early bird or educational segment please let me know. You can call me 916.296.8861 or email me [email protected]. I have openings for early birds starting in April. Keep sewing…..Marei Montalvo

We are pleased to announce that our next workshop will be July 21 & 22,

2017 and will feature Gina Perkes. Gina is an

internationally award-winning quilter. In 2015, she received the Best Longarm

Machine Workmanship award at the AQS Paducah show. Her quilt Nostalgia is now part of the American Quilter’s Society collection displayed at the National Quilt Museum in Kentucky. Gina has been quilting for nearly two decades and has developed many tools for machine quilters and a thread line with Superior Threads. She has appeared on several quilting shows and is the author of: Mastering the Art of Longarm Quilting published by C & T. Gina loves working with other quilters, sharing her techniques and helping them find inspiration and gain confidence. She teaches both domestic and longarm techniques and believes that quilting is therapeutic and strives to create a stress-free, fun, learning environment for her students. Check out Gina’s website at http://www.thecopperneedle.com.

Gina will also give a lecture at our guild meeting on July 20th. It will be on “How Do I Quilt This?”. Do you ever find yourself uninspired when it is time to choose a quilting path for your finished quilt top? The quilting process plays a very important role in the overall success of the quilt. Gina will help you to determine an appropriate quilting plan for your quilts by addressing three important topics: function, style, and design. In her slide show, she will share with you photos of quilts in a variety of styles. She will then give you examples of how she would approach the quilting. Two lucky members will send Gina photographs of quilts to be discussed in the presentation.

The workshops will be on July 21 & 22, 2017. They are:

Not So Basic Machine Quilting (Friday July 21, 2017)

Ready to take your free motion quilting to the next level? You will learn many new designs in this class and easy ways to quilt them including: motifs, sashing designs, and fillers. Discover how to select stitching paths which will reduce or eliminate backtracking altogether. Gina will help you to identify your own unique style and build upon it. She will also discuss how to change the look and style of a quilting design by varying added details. This class is filled with techniques, tips, creativity, & inspiration!

Ruler Work I (Saturday July 22, 2017)

Quilting rulers are amazing tools! Gina will show you how to use them to create incredible free motion designs. You will discover how to hold them for better control and accuracy, how to use the registration marks on the rulers for angles and built up designs, and which foot to use. You will leave class with excellent technique and a new supply of quilting designs: both curvy and geometric.

These workshops are hands on and are taught for domestic sewing machines. The cost for the classes is $60/class. You can sign up for these classes at our January meeting. If you can’t make the meeting, please send me a check made out to SRVQG & the name of the class(es) you are signing up for. My address is Lynne Saul, 2325 N. 26 W., Idaho Falls, ID 83402.

Our “Sew Cool” group is back in full swing. In December, we made holiday stockings. Stockings were filled with donated gifts (including toothbrushes and toothpaste donated by Dr. Heninger, DDS and Dr. Frandsen, DDS). We enjoyed meeting the residents of the Good Samaritan Home when we delivered the stockings on December 23. They were surprised and delighted to receive their gifts.

In January we picked up where we left off last summer and are hard at work on our quilts. We are hoping to have several quilts in the Guild’s quilt show in March.

Please help our group! We currently have 12 children in the group, and we continue to grow. To be successful, the children need plenty of adult help every week. Your donation of time and talent is critical to keeping our group active. Your only requirement is to show up and help to monitor planning, cutting, sewing, etc. The children are delightful and I promise you will enjoy your time with them. We meet on Fridays from 3:45 – 6:45 PM at the Good Samaritan Home. Please call (357-4410) or email ([email protected]) if you are able to assist.
