Snapchat User Guide

Overview Snapchat is a social media application that is available only for mobile devices, such as cell phones or tablets. The original idea behind Snapchat was to be a way to send temporary images to other users, and have the image disappear within a couple of seconds, leaving no way for recovery of the image. Today, the application has evolved into a more complex application with a variety of uses, both for personal and business tasks. Snapchat is fun for users because it’s interactive and very personal. This attracts people of all ages who want to share their daily activities with friends and family, and maybe even the public if they have business interests. Its popularity is rising, and its profitability is rising along with it. Snapchat has even recently gone public on the stock market, and has increased its user base.

Snapchat’s Many Uses

Photo and Video Sharing: Send temporary photo and

videos “snaps” to your friends, family, and public, to let

the world know what you’re doing!

Advertising: Snapchat advertising gives you the ability

to target specific audiences through a multitude of

advertising options.

Event Advertising: List location specific events for users

to discover through the search function at the top of

the app.

Phone and Video Calling: Contact friends and family

over Wi-Fi or cellular connection for a phone call or

standard voice call.

Real Time News: See content from news agencies from

right within the app.

Location Based Business Search: See local businesses in

your area!

GPS Location Sharing with Friends: Share your locations

with friends and family with an easy to use map

function, or go into ghost mode to be hidden.

● Select the icon at the top left corner of the screen, which may be

represented differently for you, but just click in that area. This will bring you to a page with many options, such as settings, trophies, your personal QR code, and others. Refer to Ex. S-5 for use.

● The button in the lower left hand corner shows a chat bubble. This portion brings you to your friends “snap stories” and recent “snapchats” you have received from other users. A “snapchat” could be in the form of a video from your friend, or a photo from them, or both. If this chat bubble contains the blue dot seen at the top of it, you know that you have unviewed “snapchats” from friends. Refer to Ex. S-3 for use.

● Select the middle button on the bottom of the screen to view

saved “memories”, which are videos or photos you added to your snap story before and elected to save for future viewing. Refer to Ex. S-6 for use.

● The lower right hand corner will bring the user to friends’ stories as well, but in a more enlarged

state, enabling the user to get a better preview of the anticipated content. In this section, the user will also find paid content by news organizations and businesses. Refer to Ex. S-4 for use.

● The top search bar is visible from every panel of the app, allowing you to

search friends, events, nearby locations, and almost anything related to the app. (Note, English version will say “Search”)

● The lightning bolt button turns flash on and off. ● The far right button with an arrow turns your camera from front to back

facing, or vice versa.

Example S-4

This is the core part of Snapchat. Here is where you exchange

photos and videos with friends, and view the stories (collections of

photos and videos) posted by you and your friends. (Note, English

version will say, “Friends” at the top of the screen.)

If you selected the bottom left button from Ex. S-1, you will be

brought to this page.

Click this button to initiate a chat with a friend.

Click on the circle left to their name to view their story.

Click on their name to view snaps they have sent you individually.

Click on the circle at the bottom of the screen to take your own

snapchat photo, or hold to take a video.

If you selected the bottom right button from Ex. S-1, you

will find yourself on this page.

Select any of the large boxes to open the same snap

stories from friends that you saw in the previous window,

or look for sponsored content from companies and news

agencies.

Feel free at this point to click on any of the previously

talked about buttons to return to previous pages in any

order or sequence.

(Note, the English version will say “Discover” at the top of

the screen.) This search function will allow you to see

friends who shared their location, and location specific

events and businesses.

Clicking on the top left button from Ex. S-1 will bring you here.

The red gear will bring you to Snapchat settings. This section of

the app allows you to modify preferences for how you use the app.

Clicking on this button will allow you to share your Snapchat user

name, or your Snapchat QR code, which is the yellow box above

your username. (Note, the English version will say, “Share”).

Click this button to add friends by username or Snapchat QR code.

(Note, the English version will say “Add Friends”)

Click here to add “snaps” to your “Snapchat story”. (Note, the

English version will say, “My Story”)

Or click here to make a unique story, for example, maybe you

want to make a story for your birthday party. This makes it so

either your friends can add “snap” to this, or you can make it

public and anyone can add in the area. (Note, in the English

version this will say, “Create a new story”)

You will notice I’ve left out one button, the, “Bitmoji” button. This

is because this button will take you to a third party app.

Example S-5

If you selected the bottom middle button from Ex. S-1, you

will be brought here. (Note, the English version will say

“Memories” at the top of the page.)

Using the search bar at the top of this page lets you search

through your saved “snaps” from the past. Some of the

options to search by are: date, location, or even category of

“snap”, such as, sports, photos with sunglasses in them, or

many others.

The top right button will allow management of your saved

“Memories”. Things such as deletion, sharing, private locking

authorization, or reposting.

(Note, the English version will have options that say, “All,

Stories, Camera Roll, and My Eyes Only”, respectively.

Advertising with Snapchat “Filters” Snapchat offers advertisers one of many ways to advertise to its user, one of which is the highly interactive “Filters” option. This option modifies the user’s camera experience and puts business content right onto the photo or video of the user.

(Snapchat)

As you can see, these images above are a few of the examples out there of how businesses have chosen to use, “filters” for advertising.

American Airlines made a filter for users at LaGuardia Airport, advertising their airline that flies out of this airport.

Honda chose to make a filter for users that attended the All Star game in LA. This promoted their car company in hopes that users will purchase a Honda car.

Warby Parker, the eyewear company, made a “filter” for Walnut St. Philadelphia, promoting their sunglasses for customers in that area. These are all creative ways to engage your customer with your specific business interest.

Another company with defined success was the Mentos company. Through ad filters, Mentos garnered 300+ million ad impressions, a 7pt ad awareness increase, and a 11.76% potential customer to customer conversion rate. This was all achieved through a national ad campaign, which for most would be expensive, but it’s good to remember that anyone can take advantage at a smaller scale. Take a look at the webpage for more information: https://forbusiness.snapchat.com/success-stories/how-mentos-raised-awareness-on-snapchat
