Hi <<First Name>>, Snapchat is fun; it rewards interaction with Trophies and provides a vast library of filters that will turn you from messy to cute in a single swipe. Teens LOVE it. However the truth is, they use the app because their parents don't. There is a secretive nature to its disappearing content; there are no consequences when the proof disappears after ten seconds, or so they think. Their Lives Are Better Than Mine We can all be guilty of promoting our best self online; our Facebook Newsfeeds are full of weddings, holidays and dining- out but we don’t necessarily take selfies when the baby has kept us up all night, or when the dog has covered us in mud. There is now a growing concern that these constructed online personas are leading to an increase in mental health issues in young people, particularly girls. Dr Bernadka Dubicka, the Chair of the Child and Adolescent Faculty at the Royal College of Psychiatrists was reported in The Guardian recently saying; “There is a growing crisis in children and young people’s mental health, and in particular a gathering crisis in mental distress and depression among girls and young women… Emotional problems in young girls have been significantly, and very worryingly, on the rise over the past few years." Snapchat Whats New

Hi ltltFirst Namegtgt

Snapchat is fun it rewards interaction with Trophies and

provides a vast library of filters that will turn you from

messy to cute in a single swipe Teens LOVE it

However the truth is they use the app because their

parents dont

There is a secretive nature to its disappearing content

there are no consequences when the proof disappears

after ten seconds or so they think

Their Lives Are Better Than Mine

We can all be guilty of promoting our best self online our

Facebook Newsfeeds are full of weddings holidays and dining-

out but we donrsquot necessarily take selfies when the baby has kept

us up all night or when the dog has covered us in mud

There is now a growing concern that these constructed online personas are

leading to an increase in mental health issues in young people particularly

girls Dr Bernadka Dubicka the Chair of the Child and Adolescent Faculty at

the Royal College of Psychiatrists was reported in The Guardian recently

saying

ldquoThere is a growing crisis in children and young peoplersquos mental health and

in particular a gathering crisis in mental distress and depression among girls

and young womenhellip Emotional problems in young girls have been significantly

and very worryingly on the rise over the past few years

Snapchat fuels these personas through their use of fun

custom filters which can change the users face shape

add makeup and smooth skin along with many other

options

This week Hello Giggles quoted a seventeen-year-old

girl as saying

Sometimes I will put makeup on to just go outside to

take a picture to make it look like my life is glamorous

and I naturally look this way Filters work magic

So even if their hair needs washed and a big spot just appeared on the tip of

their nose they can send a fun selfie to their friends However by doing this

exclusively not only are they presenting an unrealistic representation of

themselves to their friends but they may not be embracing and becoming

comfortable with their own appearance

Why Wasnt I Invited

Earlier this year Snapchat released a new feature called Snap Maps an

interactive map where you can view Snapchat Stories from all over the world

Users can also see their friends and view their Stories from this screen Snap

Maps does this by pinpointing a userrsquos location placing an icon called a Bitmoji

on a map The location can be highly accurate right down to the street or even

house number which broadcasts the userrsquos exact location to everyone in their

contact list

Users have expressed anxiety and concerns over being

able to see their friends together and in one location

while they are at home and unaware of any plans to

meet When they see their friends together without

being invited they feel like they are missing out

Many Safeguarding professionals have expressed concerns over the risks

presented by broadcasting a geolocation in this way Not only does this

broadcast a users current location to anyone who they accept as a friend but

there are other risks involved such as inadvertently sharing that their entire

family is on holiday and there is no-one at home

We highly recommend that users activate Ghost

Mode for this function to hide their

location If you dont activate Ghost

Mode your location on Snap Maps will be

updated when the app is open even if it is

running in the background

When 10 Seconds Lasts a Lifetime

Snaps which are sent from one user to another

disappear after they are viewed Snap Stories

disappear after 24 hours

Even though teens use these features because there are fewer consequences

than posting permanently they need to be made aware that they can lose

control of the content they share

While Snapchats servers do automatically delete the content there are many

ways for content to be saved or recorded For example if a recipient saves a

senders Snap by screenshot or

screenrecord the sender will see the

Screenshot icon However there are third-party apps which will save Snaps

without activating this function and users have also bypassed this restriction by

taking a photo of the screen with another device

What to do if a Child Shares a Sexually Explicit Image

It is an offence to take or share an indecent image of a child under 18

Therefore a child who takes an image of themselves and shares it technically

commits a criminal offence Although the Police do not prosecute children who

have made a simple error of judgement the fact that it may be investigated

causes children to worry and could be a deterrent to them coming forward

It is never too early to invest in positive conversations with children and young

people and it is always good to reassure them that no matter what happens

they can always come to you for help Please do reassure them that everyone

including the police will simply want to help them

The key is EARLY reporting and EARLY

intervention

Most social media sites have strict policies that prohibit

nude photographs However they are also clear in

stating that they are reactive ie they DO NOT

proactively monitor all content that is posted on their

platforms They only rely on users to report anything

that may be a breach of their terms and conditions So

when an image is reported especially a nude image

social media platforms will normally remove the content

immediately

If a child confides in you about this issue BE CAREFUL ABOUT WHAT YOU

SAY and how you say it Never take away hope that something can be done to

help Every time you get the chance to reinforce the fact that the sooner they

tell you theyve made a mistake the sooner you can help them and very often

IT CAN BE FIXED
