That means it is very unlikely that we will be back in the pool before June. As they are government owned, that is probably government policy but not yet made public. Some of us have been swimming in the ocean and apart from the last week when it was a bit rough, it has been very enjoyable with the water temperature about 23C. It will be a little chillier by June but let’s see if we can keep it going. If you haven’t tried it, give it a go while the temperature is still very pleasant. A special thank you to Merilyn for stepping up the frequency of Snappets to keep everybody in touch. See you in the ocean! COMMITTEE MEETING, MONDAY 20 TH APRIL The committee meeting due to be held on 25 th March was cancelled because of the virus. Last Monday we held a meeting using ZOOM. Tania acted as host and set it up and Tania, Dale, Bill and Peter connected up OK. Pamela and Barry had problems so Barry was on his mobile to Tania’s mobile on speaker and Pamela was on her mobile to Peter’s mobile and it all worked. Towards the end of the meeting, we got Barry connected as well. All a bit hilarious! Most of the meeting was dealing with minor admin but various matters that had been put on hold due to holidays and the virus are to go ahead, including Instagram, alterations to the website and an application for a grant. We are also organising an online raffle to replace the weekly one while the pool is closed. Details soon! SWIMMING AT THE BEACH About ten of our members have taken to the sea to keep their water-based exercise going. Ocean swimming is much more challenging than the pool and you have to keep your wits about you to adjust to the ever-changing conditions. However you are rewarded many times over when you try it. On a couple of occasions the water was too rough so the group walked along the beach instead. That was hard work! Last Sunday, the wind, waves and swell were all up and Barry was the only one who turned up at City Beach. Everybody else was deterred by the Surfcam images or by their own sixth sense. Barry took to the water and later sent this email to the rest of the group: Where were you this morning? I stupidly decided to brave the wild surf just for the exercise and found difficulty getting back to shore. I eventually made it to the north side of the north groyne where, thankfully as I was on my way to Scarborough, some nice board riders helped me ashore after I had made intimate contact with the groyne and acquired cuts and abrasions. A nice lady had run along the beach to the south groyne and alerted the life savers, so one headed north and I was treated with bandages. I am just about to commend that life saver to Graham Wimbridge who is a great supporter of the City of Perth Surf Life Saving Club. One lesson is - don't swim alone! Barry’s injuries are healing well and he has been back to the beach. Wisely, he’s waiting for calm conditions before he hits the water again.

INSTAGRAM AND FACEBOOK Tania Gregg Stadium Masters can now be found on Instagram as well as Facebook by searching Stadium Masters Swimming Club. We want everyone to “follow” us and “like” us!

To use Instagram you have to download the Instagram app, sign in and then select other people or organisations to follow. You only receive Instagrams from those that you choose to follow. In the case of our Instagram account "Stadium Masters Swimming Club" I have chosen only a few people/organisations to follow at this stage, all relevant to the Club ie, HBF Stadium, Elena Nesci e-swim, Masters Swimming WA, Masters Swimming Australia, Port to Pub, Rotto Swim and Swim Thru Perth. The more people/organisations Stadium Masters follows, you would hope that the more they follow us back. I'll soon follow the other WA swimming clubs, too. Then I can see what sort of posts they are making. It’s good if our members also follow us so that, in their friends' Instagram "feeds", they might see the "Suggested for You" options and hopefully our Stadium Masters account will show up there.

WHAT ARE YOU DOING? In the last newsletter I asked people to let me know what they were doing instead of swimming at “our” pool. Here are some responses. Jackie: My exercise partner and I do Nike run club exercise sessions on my newly oiled deck every day - finally I had some time to do that. Yippee! He is not the cheeriest of gym buddies though.

Peter: I went through my wardrobe and have heaps of clothes to donate to op shops. Audrey, aka the Queen of Nodding Violets: Lots of work in my garden every day. Dale: Trying to keep fit by walking in the evenings – definitely not as effective as swimming. Marg W: Re-doing my hanging baskets. Helen Loake and Mark Anderson: Taking long bike rides. Pamela: Renovating a house. Elizabeth: Sewing PPE for health workers and doing jigsaws. Lynda Joachim from another beach, Main Beach on the Gold Coast: Best wishes to all, love and virtual hugs.

AND GOGGLE HEARD that

June Maher is pretty pleased with her freshly dry-cleaned curtains, and vacuumed nooks

Patrick is cooking up a storm in the kitchen - pressed tongue and home-made tomato sauce

Marg Somes is swamped with sorting all those family photos

Dee thinks she's getting lazy!

Mary and Stuart are going on late night rambles to avoid bumping into people.

I’d love to hear what you’re doing, too, to occupy the time you

would have spent at HBF Stadium, especially if it’s something

you’ve never done before. Thanks, Merilyn.

Jackie’s gym buddy

Audrey watering her new pansies

Pamela installing insulation

BLAST FROM THE PAST: Snappers Swim around Australia Marg Watson

Perth hosted the FINA World Masters Swimming Championships in April 2008. We were fully aware of the extensive preparations going on at the Stadium and were caught up in the excitement, especially at the thought of hosting the “Worlds” in our home pool!

Sue Colyer came up with this idea: to encourage greater swimming participation why not swim around Australia and arrive back in time for the start of the Championships?

The scheme took off! Our circumnavigation started with us swimming north from Fremantle on 1st January 2006 and we planned to be back in Fremantle again by April 2008. Captain Gerry Krygsman worked out the total distance (12,155km). It was wonderful to see lots of people keeping a record of their swims. Each month the Club’s progress was charted on a map. At that time we were lucky to have the use of a big display cabinet downstairs at the Stadium in which the map was hung. It took us only six months to get to Cape Leveque, by the end of November 2006 we had reached Cape York, Queensland and then raced down the east coast to round South Cape, Tasmania in June 2007.

We achieved our goal. In fact we arrived back early and had to do a few virtual laps of Rottnest to use up time before crossing the finish line.

ELENA’S LAND-BASED EXERCISES

Hope you are reaping the benefits of Elena’s exercises. Here’s the first stretch in her Core and Glutes program. You can find the complete series on our website at http://www.stadiummasters.org.au.

Pelvic Tilts: Gently warm up your lower back, glutes, core and hip flexors with pelvic tilts. Start with a narrow range and build range as you go. Perform approx. 20-30 reps and aim to flatten lower back onto floor/mat each cycle.

ASSISTANT RECORDER Bill Woodhouse

Remember when we used to swim in calm water in a pool above a straight black line? Here are some points accumulated before the pool closure. Other files are out of reach in the cage, awaiting our return asap.
