By Burton Housman, NMC VolunteerThere's a lot in the news about PTSD. Often itseems too technical, too mysterious, too threateningto grasp. Family members, friends and caregiversespecially need to understand its nature as aninjury, its invisibility, its authenticity, its impact, itscapability of recovery, its stigma - and they needhelp in knowing how to address it.Recently a volunteer at the NMCSD ASYMCA tookpart in an intensive seminar on this topic organizedby the Chaplains Corps - Combat Operational StressControl for Caregivers: Understanding andAddressing Combat Stress. It was three days of

intensive training at Camp Pendleton. The ASYMCAis using the resources highlighted by that seminar tooffer a highly needed training program forvolunteers, friends and family members who wantto learn more about combat operational stress. Itwill focus specifically on the following question forcaregivers who are not mental health professionals:What must each of us do to understand PTSDbetter? If you are interested in better understanding PTSDplease call Armed Services YMCA office located atNaval Medical Center - 619.532.8156

From the Desk of Executive Director Paul Steffens:From the Desk of Executive Director Paul Steffens:

I know it is evident to everyone that economic hard times are upon us. Oil prices aredriving everyday costs higher and higherfrom gasoline to groceries and air travel. While we are seeing some impact on donations to support our programs, I am verypleased that the San Diego Community continues to recognize the need to assistmilitary families and continues to support our programs. We are confident that thissupport will continue, as will the need for our programs. To meet this need, we areexpanding our Murphy Canyon Facility by adding a 24 x 60 modular building. Theexpansion is needed to increase our Youth and Community Outreach Programs, including introducing spouse and children programs to other local community centers.

The expansion will also enable us to increase our Family Counseling Programs. Again,I must express our appreciation to Rear Admiral Hering. Without his strong support, this expansion would not be a reality. I also want to thank TriWest Health CareAlliance, the Fletcher Family Foundation, and the individual members of the FletcherFamily for their generous financial support of this expansion project.

In May, we started a series of briefings to San Diego Flag Officers on the MilitaryFamily Support Summary and Needs Assessment. In July, we will sponsor the secondMilitary Family Service Agencies Conference to brief the assessment report, and

develop strategies for improving existing support programs and implementing newprograms to further assist military families. After the conference, we will issue thefinal report, a report that, along with our Strategic Plan, establishes our baseline forthe next five years. In closing, if you know of a military family that is not aware ofour programs, which are all free of charge, please tell them about us. We standready to assist!
