Student Council is a New Hit at SJABy: Tess Hart
This year, Miss Synan and Miss Crandall started a studentcouncil for the SJA students in grades 5-8. The student councilallows students to participate in charities, make decisionsabout upcoming events, and share new project ideas.
Miss Synan and Miss Crandall started student councilbecause they received a letter from a student thinking student
council might be a good thing to try. The meetings are held once a month right after
school in Miss Synans room.
The students are expected to be good role models and have enthusiasm forprojects. They should also have leadership, a willingness to participate, dedication, and commitment.
I asked Sophie Malone (one of the 6th grade representatives) what studentscould do to get into student council next year. She said, They can have goodpresentations, get good grades, and try out.
Student council has an upcoming charity project called Nickels for Nails. Theywill collect money to buy nails for Habitat for Humanity. Habitat for Humanity builds
homes for underprivileged families. A specific date for the fundraiser has yet to beannounced, but I can assure you it is coming soon.
Whos Your Valentine?By: Zoey Swanda
Whos your Valentine? St. Joan of Arcs Middle School students are sellingCandyGrams for anybody who wants to get one for that special someone. You can
get them for a family member or a friend.
The CandyGrams are only fifty cents. All of the money willbe raised for a charity called Embrace. Embrace is a sleeping bag
that warms up and keeps pre-mature babies warm. Mostly peoplein India and other third world countries use them.
All the kids loved the idea of raising money for Embrace, saidsixth grade homeroom teacher, Mrs. Mansour.
We started selling them on Wednesday February 8, Thursday February 9, andFriday February 10, after school. On the following Tuesday (Valentines Day) is whenpeople received them. SJAs Middle School will be selling them at the gathering area

Ask Shirley
Dear Shirley,
My mom is so unfair and Ialways have to baby-sit. So when I tell her I dontwant to, she gets mad at me. What should I do?
-Bob Magee
Dear Bob Magee,
My best advice would be that you could reason with her. Maybesay that you will baby-sit, but also say that you want to hang out with
your friends next time she asks. One thing not to do is get mad andyell at her and say, Its not fair. The best way to respond is to keep acalm tone and to reason with your mom. Do not go too far when yourreason, only a little bit.
Sincerely,Shirley
Dear Shirley,
Why is the world spinning?
Sincerely,Concerned U.S. Citizen
Dear Concerned Citizen,
Well first things first, ask your science teacher this question. Theyshould know the answer to your question. But here is my best answer;the world spins for a reason. We have night and day. The sun is in the
universe and so is the moon. We see the sun when it is daytime andwe are facing the sun. The light shows our way. When the sun doesntshine it means that it is nighttime and we are no longer facing the sun.We see the sun because the Earth rotates (or spins).
Sincerely,Shirley

Dear Shirley,
What is a good way to convince my parents to get me a lizard? Please help!!!
- Fran Z. Kocheb
Dear Fran,
You might have heard this advice before, but I will say it now.Show how responsible you are to them. Clean up after yourself, and ifyou already have a pet, take some responsibility on the chores for thatpet. To show responsibility, clean it, pick up after it, and maybe take itout for a walk without being told. Making sure your homework is doneand not forgetting your commitments is a part of showing them that
you are ready to have a lizard. Show your parents that you can beresponsible for a pet.
Sincerely,Shirley
Dear Shirley,
Im a student at SJA and in my class I only have acouple friends in my class, and I dont quite fit in. Howdo you think I can still keep my old friends but also fit
in with the popular crowd?
From,Curious Student
Dear Curious Student,
To make some new friends try to find common interests. Seewhat they like and you may have some of those same things incommon. What not to do is do everything that they do. If they do bad
things or not follow the rules, dont follow them in their bad habits. Agood way to keep your old friends is to keep in touch. Secludingyourself is not a good way to get friends. In the process, you couldeven end up losing some of your old friends.Keep in mind that if you have to change yourself in order to get peopleto like you, dont bother. Changing yourself, like your attitude towardsthings, shouldnt happen. A true friend likes you the way you are. Keep

Often times we hear fromthe older children at the school, and we pay special attention tothe cute faces of the youngerstudents. But what about themiddle grade of our whole school. .. the fourth grade?
On Thursday, January 2, Itook a look at what was going onin the fourth grade room andinterviewed a couple of studentsto learn more.
The students were havingD.E.A.R. Time - which meansDrop Everything And Read.During this time, the studentsread and worked on any otherassignments the teacher gavethem. I asked Madison Hansmanand Hannah Scofield a fewquestions. I learned that Hannahsfavorite subject is handwriting, and she enjoys this because itsreally fun, and shes good at it.
Another topic I looked intowas one favorite memory theyhave from fourth grade so far.
Their answer was, We enjoyplaying sparkle because you canlearn so much in a fun game.
After I finished up with thetwo girls, I asked Miss Synan, the
fourth grade teacher, a fewquestions. I asked her whatsubject she enjoyed teaching themost, and her answer was mathbecause she enjoys seeing theirfaces light up when somethingclicks.

SJA Never Forgets the SaintsBy: Vincent J. Chonis
The 2011-2012 school years SaintContest ended with a twist. The sixth grade
won, and they also won when they were infifth grade.
Eighth was our challenge, was astatement made by the winners . Ourprincipalactually didnt start the contest.
Mrs. Wallace said she does not knowhow it started, but it was just a tradition.
The questions are picked by the teacherswhen they research five saints. Theteachers are the experts.
Then each class fromfourth gradeand above sends three students to
represent their class. Our principal thinksthat the kids on the teams benefit from thecontest the most. She thinks that becausethey end up studying, learning, and thinkingtheir hardest.
The kids watching also benefit. Theysee how important it is to learn in their life.
They see how studying helps.
