Nov. 5, 1922
Ah, the life of a pharaoh in ancient Egypt! Elaborate palaces, surrounded by ser-vants, adorned with gold and precious
jewels and a burial fi t for a king. Who can beat it? And probably the most fascinating of all the pharaohs was the young King Tutankhamun, better known to us as King Tut who began his rule in 1333 BC at the age of 9. His reign was short-lived, however, as he died in 1324 BC. Scholars have extensively studied his short life of 19 years, but much of his life and especially his death remains a mystery to this day.

THE 18TH DYNASTY AND RELIGIOUS UPHEAVAL
Tutankhamun was born in 1343 BC. He was named Tutankhaten, the ‘aten’ from the god depicted by a sun disc. Life was good for Tutankhaten as it was thought he was much loved by his parents and heir to the throne his father, Pharaoh Ahkenaten held for 17 years. Dad was a very power-ful autocratic ruler who decided to abolish the ancient Egyptian religious practice of polytheism, or the worship of many gods, to monotheism, worship of a single god. Up until this time, the ancient Egyptians had worshipped multiple gods – upwards of around 2,000 – for possibly thousands of years.
Change did not come easy. Akhenaten was obsessed with his newfound religious be-liefs and life for Egyptians revolved around this change. The government was no longer run by priests, but by Akhenaten backed by a powerful military force. He built a new capital city of Amarna and forced the more than 20,000 people of Thebes to move there. Everyone was required to worship the god Aten and images of the old gods had to be destroyed.
THE DEMISEOF AKHENATEN
It should be no surprise that Akhenaten would be a very unpopular king once he es-tablished a mandatory change in religious beliefs and practices. When Tut was 7 years old his father was forced to abdicate the throne. He died shortly thereafter. Tut did not immediately take over the throne. Someone by the name of Smenkhkare Ankhetkheperure began a two-year reign starting in 1336 BC. Rumor has it that she was actually Nefertiti, Akhenaten’s chief wife and Tut’s stepmother. More about these relationships later.
ENTER KING TUTAt the ripe old age of 9, Tutankhaten be-came the reigning king. He was not alone and had the advice and counsel of Ay, a fam-ily member, as well as General Horemheb, military commander and his deputy. The young king ordered the restoration of many of the old temples in Thebes. He also worked on foreign policy - improving re-lations with neighboring lands - and may have fought in battles against Egyptian en-
emies.
When Tut was 12 years old, he changed his name from Tutankhaten to Tutankhamun to align himself more with the god of Amun and the Amun priests rather than the mono-theistic god of Aten of his father’s reign. It was during this time that he moved the royal family back to their roots in Thebes.
KEEPING IT INTHE FAMILY
It was thought that the Egyptian gods and goddesses practiced incest to maintain the bloodline. Since pharaohs were considered living gods, incest was a perfectly accept-able practice for royalty in ancient Egypt. Tut’s family was no exception.
Upon becoming king, Tut married Ankhesenpaaten, his half sister. Ankhesen-paaten’s mother was Nefertiti, one of Tut’s father’s wives. Some researchers name Kiya as Tut’s mother and some reports say that DNA studies indicate his mother was actually one of his father’s sisters, Queen Tiye. She was seen as quite infl uential dur-ing Tut’s reign as king once her husband, Tut’s father, died. Tiye’s fi rstborn, Prince Tuthmose, is rumored to have been the Moses who led the Israelites to the Prom-ised Land of bible fame.
Tut’s main advisor, Ay was Tut’s stepmoth-er Nefertiti’s father and his wife’s grandfa-ther. Confused?
Tut and his wife, Ankhesenpaaten, who also dropped the “aten” in her name and replaced it with “amun,” were thought to
have two children who were stillborn. The mummies of these infants were found in Tut’s tomb.
THE END OF TUT’S LIFE A shroud of mystery has surrounded the death of Tut. He was only 18 or 19 years old at the time of his death. For a long time, it was thought he was killed by a blow to the head. Some historians say there is evi-dence of an infection from a broken leg; others suggest several bouts of a severe form of malaria that can cause death; and still others purport Kohler disease, a bone disorder. Recently, some German scientists have suggested he died from Sickle Cell disease.
FAST FORWARDTO CARTER
AND CARNARVONIf the ancient Egyptians were correct in their belief that a pharaoh would live for eternity if only his name was remembered, then Tut is sitting pretty in the afterlife. He was considered a minor king with a short-lived reign, but the discovery of his tomb has provided more than 15 minutes of fame.
Tut’s tomb was discovered in 1922 by the English archaeologist, Howard Carter who was fi nanced by Lord Carnarvon. It was

found in the Valley of the Kings in Thebes where many pharaohs were buried. It was thought that the tomb was quickly put to-gether, likely due to Tut’s early death, but still contained about 3,000 treasures. It was the custom to have a space of 70 days be-tween death and burial; however, preparing a tomb grand enough for a pharaoh took much longer than 70 days. It is possible that Tut’s demise prompted the use of a tomb that was being prepared for another pharaoh. Nonetheless, there was enough in the tomb to tell the story of his riches. Much of the contents are on display in the Egyptian Museum in Cairo; and some tour the world, such as the exhibit currently at the Denver Art Museum.
THAT CURSED TOMBIt’s been the belief since shortly after the discovery of Tut’s tomb that anyone enter-ing it was cursed with not only bad luck but an untimely death. It all started with the death of Lord Carnarvon just a few short weeks after he entered the tomb in early 1923. Soon thereafter, he was bit by a mos-quito on his cheek and eventually suffered an infection and died from it. Tales of the curse were rampant after that.
The “New York Times” reported in Decem-ber 1922 that a messenger going to Howard Carter’s home found a bird cage with a co-bra in it that held Carter’s dead bird in its mouth. The cobra was the symbol of the Egyptian monarchy worn on the head of the pharaoh to ward off the enemy. This tale likened the incident to the cobra break-ing into the home of Carter who was break-ing into the tomb of Tut. Others have since disputed this by reporting that Carter’s bird had been given to a friend to bird-sit who in turn gave it to another acquaintance.
Another common misconception is that there is an inscription on Tut’s tomb that says: “Death shall come on swift wings to him that toucheth the tomb of the Pha-raoh.” Other reports say the inscription reads: “Death shall come on swift wings to him who disturbs the peace of the King.”
Neither is true.
Many rumors have suggested the majority of people present at the opening of Tut’s tomb died shortly thereafter, but Egyptolo-gist Herbert E. Winlock states that out of those 26, only six died within 10 years. Howard Carter himself, who had likely spent the most time in the tomb, died from natural causes in 1939 – 16 years after he fi rst found the tomb.
Other than good old fashioned rumor and sensationalism, if there were an inordinate number of deaths of those involved with the opening of the tomb, there could be a reasonable explanation. Some scientists say that the tomb likely contained con-tamination such as bacteria and molds. The bacteria Staphylococcus and Pseudomonas genera, and the molds Aspergillus niger and Aspergillus fl avus have been found in unopened tombs and can be especially dangerous for individuals with weakened immune systems.
TUT AND THECURSE LIVE ON
Movies, games and song:
• The 1939 fi lm, “We Want Our Mummy” starring the Three Stooges who explore the tomb of King Rutentuten (“rootin’-tootin’) and Queen Hotsy Totsy. And if that wasn’t enough, they made “Mummy’s Dummies” 10 years later with a toothache storyline.
• Victor Buono played King Tut in the Batman TV series for two years in the mid 1960s. Tut was the villain here.
• The video game “Sphinx and the Cursed Mummy” features a young and naïve mummy.
• Anyone around in 1978 is likely familiar with the song, “King Tut” performed by co-median Steve Martin and his backup band called the Toot Uncommons. The original performance was seen on an April 22, 1978 “Saturday Night Live” episode.

I have met people who carry outward anger. That is people who take their anger out on other people through losing their temper or simply blam-ing others for their diffi culties. I’ve met people who have inward anger. That is people who might pretend to be happy, but inside their anger is eat-ing them alive. However, they may be in such denial, they do not work with healing the anger. How many people just want to stay angry and not DO anything about it? Plenty it seems. This is called being passive.
The people who I have known to ex-press outward anger would be adults and adolescents with whom I have worked. The adolescents I’ve known were typically angry with their par-ents and/or circumstances. Many of the adolescents did not want to or know how to heal their anger, so their anger remained. Unfortunately, the anger develops into addictive pat-terns, academic diffi culties, and re-lationship diffi culties. Some of the adolescents work around the anger (meaning they selectively express their anger outwardly) some suppress it, and some do not. Some may heal it later.
The majority of the angry adolescents I have worked with were misunder-stood. Many adults do not take the time to understand the angry adoles-cent, whether that adult is the parents or teacher. It becomes easier to simply tell the adolescent to NOT be angry and then attempt to force the him or her into compliance. I’ve never seen forced compliance lead to anything positive. It may lead to temporary fi x, but not positive change. Many teens and preteens are prescribed ADHD and ADD medications, such as Ad-
TAI YI-PASSIVITY
derall and Ritalin. People need to make their own choices and hopeful-ly people research these medications, but if someone asked me my opin-ion on ADD/ADHD medications, I would say it can be very detrimental to the child’s health.
Our society is so programmed (pas-sive) to drug up the problem rather than fi x it. I have worked with many adolescents that were on ADD/ADHD medications. All it did was suppress and keep the child in per-ceived compliance. It did not resolve anything; it simply made the adult temporarily feel better. My opinion is that adults/parents/teachers have become passive and have allowed themselves to be marketed to expect their adolescents to be silent about change and to be obedient. Many are told that if this does not occur, then the parents need to purchase legal drugs to ensure compliance. Unfortu-nately, many times, it can lead to ille-gal drug use later. The body becomes dependent on a substance to stay ‘in control’. The body can also become acclimated to the prescription drug creating a physiological and psycho-logical ‘need’ for a new substance or stronger substance. Many teens take the prescription drug and simply sell it to other students and then replace the physical prescription effect with an illegal drug. All this so our teens will shut up and sit down so that we have the energy to earn a living and survive our life? This is passive, not proactive.
Watch for next week’s article for a continuation of information on pas-sivity and how Tai Yi can benefi t in healing it. Listen to Empowerment Through Healing on Castle Rock Radio, www.castlerockradio.com at 3pm MST every Wednesday for more information on healing!

Tammy’s TipsHOW TO SEND AND
GIVE FRESH FLOWERS TO SOMEONE SPECIAL OVER THE HOLIDAYS
Fresh cut fl owers make you feel important. Flowers will say you’re worthy.. Sending fl ow-
ers also makes you dear to the heart of the person receiving the fl owers. The holidays are a special time of the year and fl owers provide a chance to tell someone they’re special.
A bouquet of fl owers is a wonderful hostess gift, fl owers are great for that person that is hard to buy for and can create a smile on an elderly persons face that last for days. Whether you send roses or a bouquet of daisies you can’t go wrong with freshly cut fl owers.
Fresh fl owers is a pick-me-up for friends that are down in the dumps. Flowers during the holidays will tell them they’re not forgotten. Don’t forget anyone you know that’s in the hospital. There’s an old saying that goes “As the fl ower dies the person will heal” Check with the hospital to see if you can send fl owers. Flowers are not allowed in certain parts of the hospital. You can deliver the fl owers yourself, have a fl orist like, The En-chanted Florist, deliver them. Fresh cut fl owers are so easy to send any where in the world.
Here is a list of things to do:
1. You could pick a Birthday bouquet out of your garden, but that’s a little hard to do here in Colorado. So the next best thing is your Hometown
Florist, like “The Enchanted Florist” They can design a beautiful Birth-day or Anniversary Bouquet Just For You! Don’t forget Valentines Day is Just Around the corner. If you think about it there is a Holiday for just about everyone.
2. Stop by and Pick out the fl owers you want for a Get Well Gift and deliver them yourself. Pick up a Spooky Bouquet on your way to a Halloween party. This is especially good if you want to make a good im-pression.
3. Go by The Enchanted Florist Pick out the vase and the fl owers that fi t the occasion Any Occasion and have them delivered. If you have a friend that’s having a Christmas party, send fl owers in advance so they can be displayed at the party and hostess doesn’t have to rush around to fi nd a vase.
4. If your sending fl owers out of the area for Thanksgiving, The En-chanted Florist can help you choose the fl owers for the occasion and then contact one of their preferred fl orist in that area. The Enchanted Florist can help you send fl owers anywhere in the world. You can have fl owers delivered to your next-door neigh-bor or send fl owers to a friend across the world. Mom is sure to smile on Mothers Day when she gets fl owers delivered to her door. This is always a great way to surprise someone far away on a special holiday. Fresh Flowers Will Always Bring A Smile to that Special Someone!

Get A Luminous, Radiant Glow
Time to Partyby Nick Yanez
In a small diner outside of his town; a food trailer, Bernard sipped his cup of coffee. Through the window he saw a storm, gray and frightful. He worried about his dog. He worried about his home. It seemed so dangerous. The waitress approached his table, she was very dull. Her feet dragged across the stained tile without a care in the world. There was nothing to care for. She carried the pot of coffee to Bernard, who looked hopelessly lost sitting alone at his table for two. Bernard waved down the waitress who topped him off. He sat and began to think. He though of the invite he had to his cousins holiday party; the one he lied to get out of. He started to think it wouldn’t have been that bad. Then, Bernard did what he always does when he gets sad; he left the diner and got into The Delorean, where he traveled
back in time to accept the invitation.
There he was at the holiday party. It took place in the most fantastic place, a bowling alley called Pinz. There, he laughed, bowled, drank, and snacked on the delicious buffet of food. He saw his cousin, his niece, his co-worker, and his dear old friend. As he was snacking down on seconds, he took a moment to look out the window. It was a beautiful snowfall, white and free. He thought of his dog playing in the snow. He thought of his home frosted in wintry goodness. He felt safe.
Bernard is special. He has The Delorean. Not all of us are so lucky. If you can’t go back in time, then be sure to make the right decision the fi rst time. Book your holiday party at Pinz today! We have plenty of party packages to fi t your company or family holiday parties. Just give us a call at (719) 487-7469. Don’t second guess it, don’t be down on the holidays; just do it, because there’s no going back.

SCIATICA JUST ONE CAUSE OF
BACK PAINDEAR DR. DONOHUE: Our base-ment fl ooded, and I was chosen to clean it. All that pushing, lifting and scrubbing did a number on my back. It’s been bothering me for two weeks. I never had a back problem before, but my dad used to have them all the time. He said it was sciatica. I believe that’s what I have. How can I get rid of it? -- M.J.
ANSWER: Don’t jump to conclu-sions. Sciatica (sigh-AT-ik-ah) is only one cause of back pain. The fact that your father had it has little bearing on your having it. Did your dad arrive at the diagnosis on his own? Many peo-
ple do. Quite often, they’re wrong.
The sciatic nerve is a large nerve formed by the intermingling of nerve roots coming from the lower segments of the spinal cord. It and its branches run from the lower back through the buttock and down the leg to the ankle and foot. Pressure on the nerve at any point in its course irritates it and pro-duces the pain of sciatica. The most common cause comes from a protru-sion of one of the back’s disks, which presses on the spinal cord rootlets that combine to build the nerve.
Low-back, buttock and leg pain are the hallmarks of sciatica. The leg pain is on the back of the leg or its outer side.
Even though the diagnosis is a bit iffy here, sciatica -- and most of the other causes of low-back pain -- get better in three to six weeks. You don’t have to completely rest. Strict bed rest is contraindicated. Walk around and perform the normal activities of daily life, but don’t lift, push or perform manual labor. Use heat or cold on your back, whichever you fi nd ben-efi ts you more.
Tylenol (acetaminophen) usually controls pain. If it doesn’t, one of the nonsteroidal anti-infl ammatory drugs (Aleve, Advil, Motrin) can be tried.

relati onship issues & personal growth.

719-210-0668or
An injection of steroids into the back takes care of infl ammation that adds to the pressure on the nerve. Surgery usually isn’t necessary. The long-term outlook is good.
If the pain hasn’t gone by four weeks, see a doctor. See the doctor promptly if pain increases or you lose control of your bladder or bowels.
The booklet on back pain provides more information on this common problem. To obtain a copy, write: Dr. Donohue -- No. 303W, Box 536475, Orlando, FL 32853-6475. Enclose a check or money order (no cash) for $4.75 U.S./$6 Canada with the re-cipient’s printed name and address. Please allow four weeks for delivery.
***DEAR DR. DONOHUE: I remem-ber your once writing about how a person with COPD ought to breathe. My dad was just diagnosed with COPD, and I would like to pass that
information to him. Will you please repeat it? -- S.A.
ANSWER: That is pursed-lip breath-ing. The person puckers the lips as though going to whistle or give a kiss. Then he inhales through his nose and exhales through the pursed lips. Ex-haling should be more prolonged than inhaling. This technique keeps the airways opened to allow more air to get into the lungs and more carbon dioxide to get out of them.
“COPD” stands for “chronic obstruc-tive pulmonary disease”: emphysema and chronic bronchitis.
***Dr. Donohue regrets that he is unable to answer individual letters, but he will incorporate them in his column when-ever possible. Readers may write him or request an order form of available health newsletters at P.O. Box 536475, Orlando, FL 32853-6475.

In dividends of sixty, our seconds, and minutes, and hours tick away. Time tends to go faster than we all
expect; the clock ticks life away, With every click of a second, and ringing of the top of the hour, something is com-ing to an end. Now we’ve all heard that “with every end comes a new begin-ning”. This may be true; however, it doesn’t make the end any easier. The fall regular season for sports is rapidly approaching its conclusion. It’s been a truly great year for our local high school athletes, and here’s a look at the teams who will be given a new begin-ning, in the form of playoffs.
THE PIGSKIN PLAYERS
The Palmer Ridge Bears and Lewis-Palmer Rangers met just a few weeks ago. Lewis-Palmer edged the Bears, to jumpstart a four game winning streak. The Bears? They rebounded with three straight wins. Both the Bears and Rangers stand a great chance in this years upcoming playoffs. Each Team hopes to make its claim to a state title.
For Palmer Ridge, it’s simple. Play some defense. Sacks leader Jeremy Aquino (4) and Interception ace Winn Howard (2) will lead the Bears’ march to keeping high scoring offenses con-fused and punished. When the Bears defense shows up, the offense follows. Palmer Ridge averages over 30 points a game when holding its opponent to two touchdowns or less. That means this team is capable of the blowouts. They’ll look to stir some magic this November.
For Lewis-Palmer it’s simple, as well. Keep it up. The Rangers have just one loss all season. Their playoff rank-ing is sure to be high, and their of-
fense high scoring. Ben Shaum (751 passing yards this season) and Colton Goeas (921 rush yards) look to con-tinue their offensive explosions after the regular season comes to a close. Coach Ramunno looks to capture 25 years of good football, and turn it into great football; maybe even a state title. You can catch the last regular season game for Lewis-Palmer at Don Breese stadium this Friday, November 5th, at 7:00pm. They’ll be taking on confer-ence rival The Classical Academy. It may be a “classic” as the rangers look to take them boys to school.
THE KICKERS
Of the things over looked in American society – Food, Technology, Freedom, Electricity, World Power Status – soc-cer, may be one of the biggest. Why is it that Americans just can’t see this sport in the national spotlight? I have no answer. If you are an American who appreciates the sport, and are in need of a soccer fi x, the Palmer Ridge Boys’ Soccer Team can oblige. In their last ten games (nine of which they’ve won) the Bears have allowed only three goals, while scoring thirty-nine! Nick Ober-meyer leads the scoring onslaught with ten goals on the season. No doubt he’s been given plenty of help from players like Owen Braley, who has ten assists this season. The Bears were overlooked coming into the season, and now their second place in their division. It’s safe to say that Palmer Ridge has reached the end of being underestimated; in all sports. Next year, a new beginning. Ex-pectations. Their time has come.

Are you looking for a new, tasty and healthy snack? How about trying a handful of almonds every day? According to accredited practicing dietitian Sara
Grafenauer, there is signifi cant scientifi c evidence to show that including a fourth of a cup of almonds into a balanced daily diet helps lower LDL cholesterol, an important factor when it comes to preventing heart disease.
Health authorities around the world recommend eating more plant foods for good health. This is because plant foods such as fruits, vegetables, grains, nuts and seeds pro-vide protection against many of the common lifestyle-re-lated issues seen today. The traditional Mediterranean way of eating, which includes plenty of plant foods, is consid-ered to be one of the healthiest in the world.
Almonds, Brazil nuts, cashews, chestnuts, hazelnuts, mac-adamias, pecans, pine nuts, pistachios and walnuts are all nuts that are packed full of benefi cial nutrients for good health. Enjoying nuts regularly as part of a healthy diet has been shown to protect the heart and may reduce the risk of developing type 2 diabetes.
All nuts contribute fi ber to the diet, and eating foods rich in fi ber, especially soluble fi ber, helps to satisfy hunger for longer. Dietary fi ber helps to lower blood cholesterol and is essential for healthy bowel function. Eating nuts in moderation can have benefi ts for weight control, and nuts naturally contain a broad range of important vitamins, minerals, antioxidants and other phytochemicals.
Just because nuts are high in fat doesn’t mean they are unhealthy. Nuts are a great source of the good fats -- monounsaturated and polyunsaturated fats -- which are essen-tial for regulating blood cholesterol.
Use the following ideas to enjoy nuts in your daily diet:
• Munch on pistachios as a pre-dinner ap-petizer.
• Roast chestnuts or pine nuts and toss them on a salad.
• Chop walnuts and add them to a dip.
• Chop pecans or walnuts and mix them into yogurt.
• Sprinkle chopped, roasted hazelnuts or al-monds onto low-fat ice cream.
• Coat fi sh with macadamia nuts or pista-chios.
• Add roasted pine nuts to your favorite pasta dish.
• Make a great pesto by blending pistachios or macadamias with fresh herbs, Parmesan and a little olive oil.
Eating almonds can make a positive difference to your waistline, as they contain dietary fi ber and protein, two nutrients known to increase the feeling that you’ve eaten enough.
“Almonds also are a great source of the antioxidant vi-tamin E, proven to promote cardiovascular health. They are rich in magnesium and potassium, essential for proper blood fl ow and the maintenance of healthy heart func-tion,” Sara explained.
Try swapping your current snack food for a handful of almonds or adding almonds to your favorite recipe. This simple recipe for Almond Trailblazer Mix makes going nutty easy to do!
ALMONDTRAILBLAZER
MIX1 cup whole natural almonds2/3 cup dried cranberries2/3 cup raisins1/2 cup banana chips or dried apple chips1/2 cup chocolate chips1/3 cup roasted sunfl ower kernels
Spread the almonds in a single layer in shallow pan. Place in the pan in a cold oven; toast at 300 F for 8-10 min-utes, stirring occasionally, until lightly toasted. Remove the nuts from the pan to cool. Toss with the remaining in-gredients until well-mixed. Store in an airtight container. Makes 12 servings.

New DVD Releases forWeek of November 1, 2010
PICKS OF THE WEEK“Toy Story 3” (G) -- Hands-down, one of the top three fi lms of the year, and Disney is pulling out the stops with its home-video releases. There’s a four-disc (two DVD, two Blu-Ray) combo that is packed to the rafters with special features that include tons of behind-the-scenes featurettes and games. Also being released this week is a massive 10-disc boxed set of the entire “Toy Story” trilogy packaged in a cute little toy box.
“The Bridge on the River Kwai” (PG) -- Alec Guinness gives a bravura performance in David Lean’s epic 1957 tale of a British colonel leading his fellow prisoners of war to build a bridge for their Japanese captors during World War II. This commemorative set includes a 35-page book with stories and photos from the production, lobby cards, a clip from “The Steve Allen Show” featur-ing Guinness and co-star William Holden, and archival audio of Holden narrating the premier of the fi lm.
“The Sound of Music” (45th Anniversary Edition) (G) -- Like “The Wizard of Oz,” “The Sound of Music” is one of those timeless musicals that is discovered and embraced by every generation since its release. Like most anniversary releases, there are several different packages you can choose from depending on how many special features you want and whether you have Blu-Ray or just DVD. The biggest
and best release is the $70 Limited Edition Collector’s set, which includes 2 Blu-Ray and 1 DVD, a CD of the soundtrack, a 100-page “My Favorite Things” scrapbook, a reproduction of the 1965 souvenir program and a limited edition music box.
“Winnebago Man” (NR) -- Jack Rebney isn’t a household word, but those who en-joy a hilarious viral video know him as The Winnebago Man, or “The Angriest Man in the World.” A compilation video of him having a series of profanity-laden melt-downs while trying to fi lm a promotional video of a Winnebago he’s trying to sell has been making the rounds for 20 years. “Winnebago Man” is a documentary about a guy who goes in search of Rebney, who disappeared two decades ago. He fi nds the elderly motorhome salesman living alone on a mountaintop, completely unaware of his cult fame.

ARIES (March 21 to April 19) Deciding to work out that pesky problem (even though you might have been bored, bored, bored with it) should be paying off right about now. Expect to hear some very welcome news very soon.
TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) Unexpected news might cause you to rethink a previous conclusion. Don’t be bullheaded and try to bluff it out. Make the needed change, and then take a bow for your objectivity.
GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) Money-mat-ters should be considered as you continue to work out your holiday plans. This is a good time to scout out discounts before demand for them outstrips their availability.
CANCER (June 21 to July 22) A calm period early in the week helps you complete most, if not all, of your unfi nished tasks. A new proj-ect appears by midweek, and this one could carry some big career potential.
LEO (July 23 to August 22) Positive results from recent ventures continue to pump up those self-esteem levels, making you Fabu-lous Felines feel you can tackle any challenge anyone wants to throw at you.
VIRGO (August 23 to September 22) Fam-ily and friends might feel neglected because of your almost total focus on a project. Try to rework your schedule so you can have time for both your loved ones and your work.
LIBRA (September 23 to October 22) Don’t be surprised if you suddenly hear from some-one from your past who wants to contact you about the possibility of renewing a long-dor-mant (if not dead) relationship.
SCORPIO (October 23 to November 21) This is a good time to check over what went right and what went wrong with recent ef-forts. This can provide valuable lessons for projects that will be coming up soon.
SAGITTARIUS (November 22 to December 21) Dealing with people who feel they’re al-ways right about everything might be a prob-lem for some. But the savvy Archer should be able to defl ate their oversize egos.
CAPRICORN (December 22 to January 19) This week favors a balance between the de-mands of your work and your need for fun timeouts. Taking breaks helps restore and keep your energy levels high.
AQUARIUS (January 20 to February 18) There could be an occasional setback in what you’re working on. But look at them as les-sons on how to do better as you move along. More supporters turn up to cheer you on.
PISCES (February 19 to March 20) Al-though a more positive aspect infl uences this week’s course, you still need to be sure that those who will work with you have no reason to work against you. Good luck.
BORN THIS WEEK: You believe in keep-ing your promises. It’s not always easy to do, but somehow you do it.

It’s easier than you think to fi nd books you’ll likely enjoy. Ask your reference librarian for a peek at a book called “What Do I Read Next?” This big volume lists authors and books alongside those that are similar in some way, offering hints about others you might enjoy.

FINANCIAL FOCUS
“ELECT”
INVESTMENTS
TO HELP
PURSUE YOUR
GOALS
Provided by Adam Graysonof EdwardJones Investments
It’s election time again, so you take time to learn about the vari-ous candidates and their positions
on the issues. But you also need to make informed decisions in other ar-eas of your life — such as when you “elect” the investments to help pur-sue your goals.
Actually, you can fi nd some simi-larities in selecting candidates and choosing investments. Here are a few “votes” that can apply to either situ-ation:
Vote for vision. When you vote for political candidates, you expect that they have a solid vision for what they want to accomplish. And when you put together an investment strategy, you also need a vision of the goals you’re hoping to reach — and this overall vision should help guide your moves over the years.
Vote for potential. When you vote for candidates, you are showing your confi dence in their potential to be effective legislators. And when you choose specifi c investments, you are counting on their potential to help you attain your objectives. For example, when you purchase growth-oriented investments, you are anticipating that their value will grow so that you can eventually sell them and make a profi t. Of course, the price of these investments will fl uctuate, and if you sell when the price is down, you could lose some or all of your prin-cipal. But if you purchase quality in-
vestment vehicles, and you hold them for the long term, you may be able to “smooth out” some of the market’s volatility and take advantage of your investments’ potential.
Vote for suitability. In choosing a candidate, you’re looking for some-one who will represent your views, as well as the best interests of your community or state. And you also want to choose investments that are suitable for your individual prefer-ences and goals. So, if you’re natural-ly a conservative investor, you won’t want a heavy exposure to riskier in-vestments. Or, if you need a specifi c amount of money in a set number of years, you may want to choose an investment that offers greater protec-tion of principal and possibly a fi xed rate of return.
Vote for clarity. Before you vote for a candidate, you’ll want to be sure you really understand his or her messages and promises. And you’ll need a sim-ilar clarity in choosing investments. Never invest in something unless you understand its risks and potential re-wards.
Vote for experience. In any election, you want to vote for someone who has the ability to carry out the offi ce that he or she is seeking. And before you choose an investment, you should have the experience necessary to eval-uate the pros and cons involved. You can gain some of this knowledge by studying up on the investments that you’re considering, but, given the complexities of the fi nancial world, you also may want to work with an investment professional.
As a responsible citizen, you know how important it is to make your voice heard on Election Day. As a diligent investor, you understand how important it is to “elect” the right in-vestments for your portfolio.
