    “Some SeedS

    FELL AMONG

    THORNS, AND

    THE THORNS

    GREW UP AND

    choked it.”

  • All Saints Catholic Parish Page 2 Alpena, Michigan

    From Fr. Joe

On this 15th Sunday in Ordinary Time we hear the

parable of a seed sower who apparently spreads

the seeds with reckless abandon. Why do I say

reckless? Well, some of those seeds fell in areas

that are very unproductive. We may look at such

a sower as being careless, inefficient, or lazy and

just trying to get rid of the seed so he can be

done with his work. But if we see the sower as

God, it tells us something else. What is that? That

God is so very generous, and his generosity

reaches us no matter where we are — on the

path, rocky ground, among thorns, or rich soil.

And, wherever God’s seeds (word) is received, it

    yields a miraculously bountiful return.

To be sure, God’s word is sown when the Holy

Scriptures are proclaimed at Mass and other

liturgies. But it is also sown in some other and

unpredictable places and ways. God’s word is

sown when the day’s joys and challenges are

shared at the family dinner table. God’s word is

sown when expressions of endearment are

    extended, when understanding and forgiveness

is communicated, in speaking words of

encouragement, in challenging injustices. In all

these ways – through us – God’s word achieves

the end for which it was sent.

However, because God’s word challenges us

to conform ourselves more perfectly to His will –

and not our own – we often close our ears to

hearing it (hard, rocky ground) which limits our

living it out. Yes, there is resistance to God’s

word, resistance God overcome with His grace,

but we must cooperate with it – God never

forces himself on us. Still, God sows the seed

(word) lavishly and with abandon. God’s desire

that the Divine Word be heard and lived (i.e.

bears fruit) is so great that God is willing to

“waste” ¾ of it in order that at least ¼ be heard

and evoke a response from us. Now, our job is to

take up God’s word and keep sowing it. We are

to scatter God’s word with abandon and with

hope. And even if only a small portion of what

we sow lands on soil willing to receive it, God

    nonetheless assures an abundant harvest.

Many of us primarily hear God’s word – Holy

Scripture – when it is proclaimed during the

Liturgy of the Word at Mass on Sundays. It really

is naïve of us to think that we can go to Mass

‘cold’ (i.e. without having prepared to hear the

Readings) and be attuned enough to God’s

word to remember the message well enough to

live it. Though not the fault of Mass (with the

Liturgy of the Word taking place relatively near

Mass Intentions & More Fr. Joe & Fr. Scott will both be celebrating Mass daily

    (without a congregation).

The following are the scheduled intentions for this week.

    Monday, July 13 .............................................††Hank & Christine Maj

    Tuesday, July 14 ........................................... ††Roy & Katherine Wilds Wednesday, July 15 ................................. ††Janet DeLorge & Paul King Thursday, July 16 ................................................ ††Gerald & Louis Lay

    Friday, July 17 ....................................................... †Dan McDougall

............................. Living & Deceased of the Parish

    ............................................... ††John & Mark Quast

    ................................ ††Mary R. & Edward E. Seguin

    ……………………...……………….….††Bob Pilarski

*The Mass intention that was scheduled for Sunday, July 19,

††Gerald & Louis Lay, has been moved to Thursday, July 16.

The reason for this is we no longer have five Masses each

    weekend, for the time being.

**Our weekend Mass schedule is subject to change weekly based

    on the availability of volunteers.

***Weekday Masses are celebrated and honored privately, but

are now livestreamed via our YouTube channel and on Facebook.

Date of Adoration Ending Early Due to a scheduled funeral Mass, Adoration will end

at 1:30 pm (instead of 2:00 pm) on Friday, July 10.

2021 Mass Book Opens for Intentions

Reminder: our 2021 Mass Book is open to schedule intentions.

What 2021 Masses will look like in terms of social distancing, is anyone’s

guess. For this reason, we will only be scheduling two intentions for

Sunday Masses and we will not assign them to any particular time.

Reminder: at this time, weekday Masses are still being honored, but

    celebrated privately by our priests.

    Rom 8:26-27; Mt 13:24-43 or Mt 13:24-30

the beginning) sometimes we are still calming

down from just getting to Mass. Maybe there

was an argument on the way to Mass; or still

anxiety from getting everyone ready and

together on time; or worry about work, about

school, a strained or broken relationship, an

underlying health concern; … etc; ... etc; … etc.

Come on, after all, life happens! And, on top of

all of that, there’s the Covid-19 thing. I don’t like

having to get a MassPasSM, having to “check-in”

before being allowed to get in for Mass. I didn’t

get to sit where I wanted to. I don’t like having

to wear a mask. I want to be able to sit next to

somebody. I want to receive Holy Communion

the way I used to AND during Mass, not after.

AHHHH!!! Yes, there are things that may get in

the way of me “hearing” and/or “tuning in” to

the Holy Scriptures being proclaimed. (Actually,

the things we are having to do in order to be

present at Mass during this time of the Covid-19

pandemic, can be a blessing – if we let it. There

is an “intentionality” made by those who

undertake the effort to get a MassPasSM – they

want to be at Mass. Having to “check-in” and

keep social distancing means we generally have

to get to church early, and since we really can’t

talk to anyone around us, there is time to “quiet”

ourselves and let those tensions and worries fade

away – and maybe even pray about them.

What a blessing that can be – if we let it.)

Another way to deepen our understanding of

the scriptures is to take some time – alone or with

others – during the week before the Sunday

Mass to sit with God’s word and actually read it,

and at least get a hint or glimpse of what God

wants you to hear. This is how we cultivate the

soil of our hearts to hear God’s word, so it is not

    wasted on barren hearts.

We also hear God’s word through the words

of others. A challenging remark that moves us to

action on behalf of others; a critical remark that

causes us to look at our own behavior and

choices; a kind remark that brings us joy – these,

too, are ways God’s word comes to us, and

ways we can sow the seed of God’s word in the

    hearts of others.

But it is not enough to hear and/or remember

the word, we have to do it. In James 1:22

(though not one of the Readings at Mass this

weekend) we hear the Apostle say, “Do not

merely listen to the word, and so deceive

yourselves. Do what it says.” The thing is, those

who keep the word, (i.e. who act on it) they are

    transformed by it.

    (Continued on page 5)...

Stewardship in Our Readings May our stewardship of time, talent, and treasure show us to be

among those who have heard the message of Christ and taken it

in, yielding a hundred- or sixty- or thirty fold!

All Saints Parish Weekend & Weekday Masses Livestreamed!

By this time in the pandemic, you have already found your preferred

method of participating in Mass from home. But may we suggest another

option which is watching weekend Mass livestreamed from All Saints

Parish. If you are unable to come to weekend Mass at All Saints (and we

do understand), this may be a way for you to still feel connected to your

    home parish.

Visit our website, alpenacatholics.org, and click on the YouTube button in

the top right corner. Once you are on our All Saints Parish YouTube

homepage, click on the videos tab and you should be able to find the

    recording.

    • You can watch the 10:00 am Sunday Mass live as it is happening or, if

that time doesn’t work for you, check back later and watch it when it

    is more convenient.

    • Daily Mass (which is not a public Mass) is now being livestreamed

weekdays on Facebook and YouTube at 9:00 am. Because of this

addition, there will no longer be the 4 o'clock live feed.

    Letter From A Visitor

The following is a kind letter from someone who was stranded here in

Alpena since the Covid-19 pandemic hit us in early March. It speaks well

of our Parish that someone (in what must have been very frustrating

circumstances) could leave now and feel so deeply blessed, and

grateful for the hospitality of our Parish. Thank you for your part in making

all of our visitors feel welcome. Please continue to do so, and please

keep all of our visitors in your prayers.

“Dear Fr. Joe & Fr. Scott & Staff,

In appreciation of having the privilege of being so welcomed here at All

Saints Parish and able to attend daily Adoration and Sunday Mass since I

was unexpectedly stranded in Alpena four months ago; please accept

this donation to put toward your CSA collections.

Everyone I’ve met since I arrived has made me feel more like a

parishioner than a visitor. My stay here has been so blessed I feel like one

of your Parish Family. Unless God has other plans, I will be leaving Sat. July

11th. I am bringing many memories and blessings with me. All of you will

continue to remain in my prayers and kept in a special place in my heart.

Thank You and God Bless You

Gratefully Yours, in The Love of The Most Blessed and Holy Trinity “

    60 years—July 16

    …(Continued from page 3)

If there is resistance to trying this – either from

yourself or someone else – it might stem from fear

of being transformed. “If that happens to me, I

might have to change the way I’ve been doing

things. I don’t know if I want that. Yeah, I might

not be the most fulfilled at the moment, but I’m

pretty comfortable with the way I am. I don’t

    want to risk being transformed.”

Go ahead — risk it! You’ll be in for the ride of

    your life!

PS. As many of you know, at the present time

due to the need to keep social distancing and

other measures to keep people safe from the

Covid-19 virus, we are not having funeral

luncheons. Those luncheons were made possible

with the help of volunteers who, though maybe

not conscious of it, were fulfilling one of the

Corporal Works of Mercy – that of burying the

dead. They did not have a part in actually

burying the deceased person, but burying the

dead involves the whole process, including

caring for the family of the deceased. (Which is

also a Spiritual Work of Mercy – comforting.)

During this time of precaution, there is another

need for volunteers in regard to funerals in

church, especially since the times of those funeral

services are when our maintenance/janitorial staff

are not present. Just as with our Sunday Masses,

volunteers are needed to sanitize the pews after

the funeral. If you are healthy and physically able

to help with this ministry to the bereaved, please

contact the parish office. Currently, we

celebrate funerals in church at All Saints Parish

only on Wednesdays and Fridays at 3:00 PM. If

we get enough volunteers we may be able to

have funerals on other days of the week.
