So you want to be a teacher?

Tudor Grange Academy Teaching School

Great, this is the book for you.

I chose Tudor Grange SCITT because I felt that the teachers were really passionate not only about their subject but supporting people like me and I found it was an exciting place to be. I’ve received amazing guidance and support and have thoroughly enjoyed my experience so far. Working in an outstanding school, I’ve observed and learnt from the best!

Initial Teacher Training at Tudor Grange Academy SCITT

Amazing.

As one of the first cohort of Teaching Schools designated by the National College in 2012, teacher training has always been at the heart of what we do. Our vision is ‘Delivering outstanding teaching & learning opportunities to benefit young people in an internationally competitive world.’ Taking the most able graduates and supporting them through the challenges and successes of teacher training is one of the best ways to embody this vision.

Choosing a teacher training programme at our SCITT gives you the opportunity to build your confidence about key teaching methods whilst immersing yourself in the everyday life of school. From the first day on the programme, you are treated as a respected member of staff and as our SCITT staff guide you through the 12 month programme, our aim is to ensure you become and outstanding teacher, capable of excelling in the classroom, and able to deliver outstanding teaching and learning opportunities to your pupils.

Our employment rate for our first cohort in 2012, was 100%, something we are very proud of both for our trainees, now all hard-working NQTs and our SCITT staff for helping them achieve this.

The Vision.

Our SCITT Programme offers trainee teachers the opportunity to experience life as a working teacher, whilst receiving on-going support and mentoring each step of the way. It’s not just the teaching you will experience, but also form tutoring, parents evenings, post-school activity, school trips, sporting events, assembly, open evenings – the full school cycle of an academic year! You will receive subject studies focusing on your chosen subject as well as a comprehensive professional studies course integrated fully with day to day classroom practice. There’s an opportunity for experience in a Primary School or a Special Needs school during your training.

Initially spending time observing classes and team-teaching, your teaching hours will gradually increase through the first term, building your confidence and allowing you to flourish in the classroom. Through the second term, you’ll spend 6 weeks at your second placement school, building confidence in class and experiencing a range of other teaching climates and environments.

Working Teacher.

QTS+60

We have a combination of places on offer. Biology, Physics, Chemistry, MFL, English, PE and History, we offer our QTS + 60 programme where you work in schools towards the award of Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) alongside 60 credits of a Masters delivered by the University of Cumbria (distance learning and lecturer visits to Tudor Grange). Some of the places are advertised as School Direct using our partner schools but Tudor Grange is still the awarding body in terms of the HEI provider. This means the programmes are the same whether you follow the School Direct or QTS + 60 routes in the above subjects. Subject to meeting all of the assessment requirements you will achieve QTS and the award of 60 masters credits towards a Masters in Education. We do work with other Higher Education Institute (HEI) providers for a small number of our School Direct subjects and places include Religious Studies, Geography, English, Music and Art. These programmes run as School Direct places with HEIs in partnership with Tudor Grange (Birmingham City University, Newman College and University of Birmingham). These courses lead to a Post Graduate teaching qualification.

All sounds good.

School Direct and SCITT

Anyone! But you need to have the drive and passion to want to teach. It’s not for the faint hearted and whilst the hours are long, the reward is second to none.

You will need a minimum of second class honours degree in your chosen teaching subject, or be able to prove that a substantial amount of your degree was spent studying that subject within your degree. You will also need GCSE Maths, English or the equivalent. Most of all, you will be able to demonstrate passion and rationale for choosing to teach. School-based experience prior to application is preferable as it shows a clear commitment to your chosen career.

You’ll need to have passed your Numeracy and Literacy Skills test well before the programme commences.

The interview process is challenging but allows us to look for the potential in candidates to become excellent teachers. During the day you will deliver a short lesson to pupils in which we are looking for the key qualities needed in good teachers, such as the ability to build relationships.

Faint Hearted!
