So here is the crazy part: So6ix is doing all of this by

text message. That’s right, no long ballot form on the

internet that you have to fill out, and no pages to tear

out and mail in to us. All you have to do is text your

nominations to us, and only the ones you care about.

There is no minimum number of categories you have

to submit. If you just want to nominate that favorite

little hole-in-the-wall bar that you love, just text us that

nomination only. We figure, if you don’t care about a lot

of the categories, then how could you have a favorite?

So do your best to tell us who and what deserves the

highest honors. We want to know the Okies’ favorites!

P.S.: Everyone who texts in

their nominations will get a

special and very cool thank-

you from So6ix and from a

company that makes us all

proud to be an Okie! You’ll

want to text in, we promise!

Hello!Thank you for picking up the newest issue of So6ix

Magazine. We told you to stay tuned for more exciting

things to come from So6ix, in addition to our tangible

changes, and well, here we are. I’m extremely excited

about this issue, because part of it has been eight years

in the making. You see, eight years ago when I was just

a 22-year-old trying to start a magazine, I really wanted

to help find out and inform everyone of the greatest

things our city has to offer. The problem was that at that

time, I just didn’t have the recognition or resources to

do it the right way. For quite a while, I was worried that I

couldn’t do it right, so I didn’t want to do it at all.

Well, I guess I can stop beating around the bush and tell

you that this month kicks off the first of several months

of the So6ix Magazine Okie Honor Awards. This will

be the first of a four-issue search for the #1’s out there.

We are determined to find out and inform everyone of

which person, place, restaurant, retailer, festival, charity,

food truck and others are the #1 favorites.

FACTSHALLOWEEN

The first

JACK O’LANTERNS were actually

MADE FROM TURNIPS.

HALLOWEEN is the second high-est grossing com-

mercial holiday after

CHRISTMAS.

A FULL MOON on

Halloween is extreme-

ly rare. The NEXT FULL MOON on Halloween

won’t occur until 2020

and the most recent Halloween full moon was

back in 2001 and be-

fore that it was in 1955.

IRELAND is typi-cally believed to

be the birthplace of Halloween.

SALEM, MASSACHUSETTS is the Halloween capital of the world.

Halloween was preceded by the CELTIC HOLIDAY SAMHAIN. As part of the celebration, it is be-lieved that Druid priests would throw the bones of cattle into a fire, hence the name “bone fire,” or “bonfire,” a fall and

HALLOWEEN TRADITION that continues today

(minus the bones).

You may not have heard of this breed, but it is ranked the 34th

Even though Weimaraners are a little on the large side, they

are graceful and alert. They make great family pets and are

all about deep bonding. And many of them have those bright

blue puppy dog eyes that are just impossible to resist!

This is one remake we can actually say we truly love. Tommy’s

Italian American Grill is back in business after a little hiatus, and we

couldn’t be happier. Tommy’s has a lovely atmosphere. It’s upscale

yet comfortable, a great combination. The staff is oh-so-friendly and

completely knowledgeable about Tommy’s from A to Z. We were

pleased to find many of the original Tommy’s items still on the menu!

We sat down with the wonderful head chef, Joshua Tolle. Of course,

we had to ask what his favorite menu item is, if he HAD to pick

one. Hint: It’s not pasta or pizza. In fact, it’s their 16-ounce hand-cut

premium Black Angus ribeye, grilled to perfection. I love it all, but if I

had to pick my favorite part about Tommy’s, it’s that everything, from

top to bottom, is a house-made recipe, and everything they offer is

made from scratch. Almost everything is made in-house, and what

isn’t is sourced locally. They’re using local homemade pasta from

a company that’s been in business for the last 30 years, as well as

local liquor, like Prairie Wolf Vodka. Even their basil is local, grown only 10.2 miles from the Tommy’s door. And can we just say that we are

extremely impressed with their wine menu? Tommy’s wine menu was specially crafted in part by the house manager, CJ Blakely. The over-

82-bottle Italian-based list will suit any dinner, dish, or evening. This wine list enhances the true Italian experience at Tommy’s. Tommy’s is

a little upscale (which we love), but there is a whole lot of good home cookin’ to be had here. It’s a spot where there is truly something for

everyone. Tommy’s also does lunch during the week, with a newly revamped lunch menu (it’s awesome, trust us!), and brunch on Saturday

and Sundays from 10:30 to 3:00. Two-dollar mimosas? Count us in! In all seriousness, the food is delectable and full of flavor. You get to

experience Italy without leaving Oklahoma. We’re so happy Tommy’s is back up and running. You can bet that we’ll be back again and

again, Tommy’s Italian American Grill.

WHAT WE TASTED: BruschettaGrilled Italian baguette, basil pesto, Roma tomatoes, fresh basil and Parmesan.

Antipasto PlatterRed bell pepper hummus, Gorgonzola, smoked Gouda, fresh mozzarella, black olives, artichoke hearts, roasted red bell pepper, capicola ham, Genoa salami and prosciutto served with toast points.

Tommy’s Original Lasagna A house specialty. Layers of spinach pasta, ground beef, Italian sausage, mushrooms, black olives, garlic, yellow onion, bell peppers, Italian herbs, ricotta, Parmesan and mozzarella cheese, finished with a tomato basil sauce.

Cilantro Pesto Linguine Smoked corn and red bell peppers sautéed in olive oil then tossed with linguine and cilantro pesto. Topped with sliced grilled chicken.

Gelato CakeLayered vanilla, chocolate and pistachio gelato with cookie crumbles.

DUCK CONFITCOOKING WITH CHEF DAVID HENRY

PREPARATION

1. In a bowl, toss duck legs with dry ingredients. Make sure the legs are coated with the salt. Let sit refrigerated for 12-24 hours.

2. Drain any liquid that has pooled in the bottom of the bowl. Pat the legs dry with a paper towel.

3. Preheat the oven to 300°F. In a 9x9 pan (round or square), place the duck legs in a single layer, then top with thyme, garlic and peppercorns.

4. Cover the duck legs with fat, making sure everything is submerged.

5. Place in oven and cook for 3 hours.

6. When finished, remove from oven and let cool to room temperature. Strain the garnish from the fat and make sure you don’t get any of the liquid from the bottom of the pan.

7. When ready to store, place legs and fat in a storage container in the refrigerator. Keeps approximately two weeks.

• 4 duck legs

• Palmful of kosher salt

• One head garlic (smashed and root removed, remaining paper is ok)

• 8 sprigs fresh thyme

• 2 tbsp black peppercorns

• 2 bay leaves

Anchor Down30 NE 2nd St., OKC, OK || 405.605.8070

Sister spot to the beloved Mule in the Plaza District, Anchor Down may just be our newest favorite spot in town. It’s got an amazing atmosphere and building concept, as well as delicious craft food. They’re putting a whole new spin on corn dogs and hot dogs. Complex batters, carefully created dips and house-made chips are all the rage, and we can’t get enough. Honestly, a corn dog can be eaten no matter the season, but this fall you’ll find us hanging out at Anchor Down.

Smokey’s HouseOctober-November, Saturdays or Sunday afternoons || Choctaw, OK 405.390.4980

Step back into a time before local grocery stores and marts were on every corner. Smokey’s House, located in Choctaw, is turning out produce the old-fashioned way. They use natural practices to grow foods like blackberries, grapes, pecans, plums and honey – but keep in mind that certain produce items are only in season certain times of the year. This fall we recommend you take the short drive to Choctaw to pick your own pecans or purchase them prepicked. There’s nothing better than local pecans for all of your fall baking needs.

P Bar Farms Corn MazeOctober-November 14 || Route 66, Hydro, OK 73048

Teamed up with the Sam Noble Museum, P Bar Farm is bringing us possibly one of the coolest corn maze designs ever: “Lost In Time!” This dinosaur-inspired corn maze features more than 3.5 miles of trails. It will take strategy: you’ll be faced with close to 100 decision points. Put on your thinking caps, and if you can think straight, this maze will take you about an hour to complete. What makes P Bar Farms even better is that it’s not just a corn maze. This fun farm hosts miniature golf, a petting zoo, a bounce pad, hayride and more. The not-so-faint-at-heart can experience the haunted maze, the haunted house or the zombie hunting expedition laser tag ride. It’s the perfect fall and Halloween destination wrapped into one. You’ll never want to leave!

Talimena Scenic DriveROAD TRIP! Take a quick trip this fall to the Talimena Scenic Drive, spanning eastern Oklahoma to far western Arkansas. This stretch has an unforgettable 54 miles of changing trees in breathtaking colors. Roll the windows down, turn the music up and take in the crisp fall breeze as you cruise through the Winding Stair Mountain. Endless trails, multiple trailer camping locations and lots of wildlife to see make this a wonderful fall adventure.

S&B Burger20 NW 9th St., OKC, OK 73102 || 405.270.0516

All I can say is WOW. We’ll take 47 of these every day, please and thank you. Honestly, you can never go wrong with ANY creation from S&B’s, but this October special tops the books for sure. The garlic Parmesan cream cheese spread is genius. We’ll eat just about anything topped with this goodness. Fall wouldn’t be complete without the Frankenburger.

The Frankenburger: A gastro patty (beef and pork blend seasoned with smoked salt) topped with grilled ham, Swiss cheese, soft fried egg, lettuce, tomato and a garlic Parmesan cream cheese spread

Art After 5 OKC MOAThursdays in October || MOA Rooftop

Thursdays in the cool (hopefully) October evenings from 5-10:30 p.m., sit atop the Museum of Art downtown and enjoy drinks and complimentary chips and salsa with friends. Not only is it the perfect switch-up from the ordinary happy hour spot, the skyline view is one of the best in the city. Sit with front-row views of the gorgeous Devon tower. Local bands will provide the tunes; all you have to do is sit back and relax. See you there!

FrightFestFriday-Sunday October 2-31 || Frontier City

Face your biggest fear this year at FrightFest! Brave your way through scare zones and haunted houses like the Nightmare Haunted House, 3 Little Piggs, Wicked Woods, Field of Screams and Boogeyman Tales Haunted Maze. These thrills are not for the faint at heart, but what’s October without a little haunting? We don’t recommend these scare spots for the kiddos, but they do have a trick-or-treat trail for them to enjoy. Dive into the Halloween spirit, if you dare.

Revolve Pizza Kitchen100 W. Main St. #105, OKC, OK 73102 || 405.600.6488

I for one will take a pizza any time of the day, because I honestly can’t get enough. Revolve introduced us to breakfast pizza, and OH MY GOODNESS! No more eating leftover cold pizza for breakfast, now that Revolve is serving up legitimate breakfast pizzas. They’ve got delicious flavor combinations that’ll make me get up out of bed any fall morning.

One thing (of the many) that I love about Kitchen 324 is that they always create their delectable dishes to fit perfectly into the current season. Whatever they whip up, it never disappoints. I could eat bowls and bowls of this short rib pasta, and honestly, anything from Kitchen 324 is the perfect match for a fall day.

Live on the Plaza2nd Friday of Every Month, 7-11 p.m. || Plaza District

Each second Friday of the month, the Plaza District is extra lively through the evening hours as shops stay open late, people of the city fill the streets and live music plays. It’s a great atmosphere to walk around with friends or family. Take a look at local featured artists’ work and try a bite from your favorite food truck. Don’t forget to stop for late-night ice cream at Roxy’s, now a brick-and-mortar store. A fall evening at Live on the Plaza is a must.

College Football October-November || Norman & Stillwater

Is it just me or does fall, college football and a big bowl of chili just all go together perfectly? Make sure this fall you don’t watch every game from the couch. Get out and enjoy the atmosphere of college football at the University of Oklahoma or Oklahoma State University.

I think I love this spot because it’s somewhat unexpected. They’re turning out dishes that may not be super common, but that are always executed to perfection and nothing short of delicious. Packard’s is refreshing and one of our favorite picks this fall.

Mickey Mantle’s Steakhouse7 S. Mickey Mantle Dr., OKC, OK 73104 || 405.272.0777

Complexly rich and decadent, this dish is one for the books. Mickey Mantle’s is deep into bourbon season, which pairs quite well with the fall. You just think you loved sweet potatoes until you’ve had these – they’ll change your life! This dish feels very manly, but don’t be shy, ladies, we can keep up, and we promise you’ll want to with the tastiness of this dish.

Warm, roasty, toasty and oh-so-delicious. Give me a chilly day and this dish, and I am set. This is truly fall in a dish; not to mention it’s football season, which also makes this place, with its abundance of TVs, the perfect stop. We’re game (pun intended).

Pumpkin PatchIt wouldn’t be a proper fall guide without pumpkins! Who are we kidding? Fall wouldn’t be fall without pumpkin EVERYTHING. Pumpkin patches aren’t just limited to the kiddos, although if you have a little one to take, we recommend it! Some of these spots have corn mazes and snack bars in addition to beautiful pumpkins to choose from. It’s only once a year that you can head out to the countryside and pick your own pumpkins; take advantage of it while you can. Just to name a few:

DINA PIERCE AND KRISTINE COMBS

Best friends for almost two decades, salon owners for 14 years: meet Dina & Kristine, owners of DK Salon. DK Salon

was established in 2001 with a vision to create an atmosphere where creative freedom and education collide. Dina

is celebrating her 30th anniversary of doing hair this year. She was always good at it and her talents were sought

after by friends in school, but it wasn’t until after she graduated that she decided to go to cosmetology school.

Luckily for Dina, her hair experience started out in a very career-driven environment. It truly became her passion,

not just a job. Kristine, celebrating almost 22 years in hair, had a little bit of an unconventional start to cosmetology.

She grew up in the business, with her grandmother having a salon inside her house, but never really thought it was

what she wanted to do. She wasn’t sure what she wanted to start a career in, so she enlisted into the Air Force.

Kristine was stationed in England for a time, and it was her hairdresser there who opened her eyes to what doing

hair was all about. After her four years of service, Kristine enrolled in cosmetology school and started working her

way up the TIGI education ladder. Kristine and Dina eventually met at

Duncan Brothers salon, where they were both working in education and

management positions. After a few years, they knew it was time to start

their own salon, one that would excel in every aspect: talented stylists,

continuing education, great techniques and more-than-satisfied clients.

DK Salon thrives on having extremely career-driven, passionate stylists

who work every day, because their work is also their hobby. DK Salon

has always been connected to the city and community, attending hair shows and providing hair and makeup photo

shoots for local publications, as well as for the Thunder Girls from 2008 to 2010. When they’re not doing hair, these

ladies love to work out, spend time with their kiddos and try the newest eateries around town. Their advice to our

readers: Go with what you’ve got. If you have straight hair, make it the best straight haircut you can. Don’t worry

about it too much or try too hard. We may sometimes want to look like someone else, but it’s best to truly strive to

be the best YOU that you can be, so find the right hairdresser to make that happen for you. They are always taking

new clients, and would love to help you be the best you that you can be. Just so you understand the talent of these

ladies, Dina was once named one of the top 100 colorists in the nation. DK Salon is not just a typical salon; they’re

doing something special. They grow with their team and work as a family, striving to make the happiest customers

possible by fulfilling their wants and needs.

DK Salon is located at 13917 N. May Ave., Oklahoma City, OK 73134. Phone: 405.775.1560.
