The 2014 FIFA soccer world cup is well under way and has already had some exci�ng matches and major upsets. ‘Who cares?’ you might ask—did you know the soccer world cup is the most widely watched sports event in the world? Soccer’s popularity is on the rise even in New Zealand. Who will take the �tle on July 14? The current world champion Spain and major player England are already out! Ross Ramblings

If you drive past Ross School in late June, you can expect to hear singing floa�ng out on the winter air, with students in the

thick of rehearsals for the annual school produc�on. As we go to press the exact plot details are s�ll shrouded in mystery,

but this correspondent can report that The Point of the Pyramid features catchy tunes and elaborate Egyp�an ouMits.

Tickets cost is $2 for adults or $1 for children and the show opens at the Ross Hall at 6.30pm on Thursday 3 July. Show

goers can stay for a cup of tea at 8pm.

The hall may receive a new roof and kitchen at some point in the future, if our mul�-talented bus driver Wayne Jones has

anything to do with it. He is reported to have done a brilliant job fron�ng a Ross Community Society presenta�on to the

Westland District Council last month, making the case for major development ini�a�ve funding to go to the hall. We won't

know un�l later in the year whether funding is available, but apparently a friendly and posi�ve morning tea was enjoyed

aOer the presenta�on by councillors and Rossites alike.

The Ross Pool is also due to get some work, with a new liner expected to be put in this winter. The pool commiPee went to

the community last year, and overwhelming support was received to get this done with Ross endowment fund monies –

money held by Council for Ross, from past sales of community owned land in the Ross area. Regular housie fundraising for

the pool also con�nues biweekly, with the next dates on the 4th and 18th of July at the Empire Hotel.

Regardless of the temperature of the water, the pool area is likely to be filled by the loud shouts of many children next

summer, because the school role has just hit 30 pupils. Gypsy day addi�ons to the Waitaha Valley community are also

seeing new faces appearing at playgroup. Welcome!

The school is also making the most of another Ross water body, by expanding the school cross country event which

involves a circuit (or two) around the Ross Lake. AOer a weather postponement, this event was a fantas�c sunny success,

with South Westland Area School, Kokatahi-Kowhi�rangi and Whataroa Schools joining in. With 150 kids, the big winner on

the day was declared to be the community, with Charlie and Tui tasked with mud crea�on on the fire truck and numerous

parents providing delicious soup, milo, cupcakes and sausages to hungry liPle runners.

This column wrongly reported last month that trees could be purchased to commemorate fallen soldiers. In fact these

plan�ng are available to remember any Ross area residents. You get in touch with Biddy Manera (7554193) for more

As they say in my favourite epic novel series "winter is coming". Well, actually it's here, although it's yet to really sink

its teeth in. We have only had a few icy mornings, but already some tourists have made the most of those

opportuni�es to skate off the road on the Fox Hills. Fortunately here have been no injuries so far, but the ice is there at

�mes so be careful.

The Disco on 13th June at the Town Hall was a great success with the liPle ones. Thanks to those who helped organise

it, and to the all the local businesses that supported it.

Recently Franz Josef Police have had several call-outs in the middle of the night for serious maPers, as have the

Ambulance service. One of these incidents arose at 1.30am aOer a German tourist and his twenty four year old

daughter staying in a campervan had an argument that turned physical at the end of a night's drinking. She knocked his

glasses off, which was not a wise move, but his reac�on was extremely violent and out of all propor�on to the

circumstances. He pushed her over face first in the gravel, knelt on top of her, and punched her repeatedly around the

head un�l people at one of the neighbouring campervans shouted at him to stop. The vic�m suffered significant

bruising and swelling all around her head, tore the corner of her mouth, which required four s�tches, and was

extremely shocked and trauma�sed by the whole incident. Thanks to those who later helped support this young lady

out of the goodness of their hearts. The offender was charged with Assault with Intent to Injure and was convicted in

Greymouth District Court.

We have had a run of incidents involving stock, and fences, and disputes over boundaries. It seems to be a touchy

subject and I won't go into detail, but if people could take basic measures to keep their stock off the road, and exercise

a liPle bit of common sense and goodwill with their neighbours when it came to these issues, it would save a lot of

conflict and avoid Police needing to get involved.

This will be my last ar�cle for the Community Contact. Recently I successfully applied for a transfer up to Kerikeri

Sta�on in the Bay of Islands, which has mul�ple aPrac�ons for me - tropical climate, close to family, incredible real

estate, and great opportuni�es for promo�on. Thank you to the people from all the four communi�es that we serve

who have shown me kindness and friendship over the past two years. Westland is beau�ful and it has been a great

experience.

You may have no�ced from past ar�cles that I am a fan of quotes. I will leave you with one of my favourites from

Hemingway: "The world is a fine place, and worth figh�ng for."

Haast Happenings June

It is raining hard outside tonight. The winter weather has been very varied recently though we have had some excellent

days. The good days have meant that the many contractors have finished the four towers and network for the Haast

community broadband.

The various teams have connected the towers and we await the grand opening

of the network on Thursday 19 June. There will be some visitors arriving at the

school to help with the launch and take part in a shared lunch.

Watch this space as Haast enters the 21st century in communica�ons

technology!

This month 12 Haast Allstars met at

the Haast Hall for Dinner.

Well, haven’t things cooled down somewhat? We’re now into winter and the

snow is on the tops, very invigora�ng, but with the fire burning it was nice and

toasty in the Hall. This month Linnie Horne came in to help us, thank you Linnie

your help was invaluable. We would never be able to run our dinners without

the help from the kind hearted locals in our community.

For dinner we had a big pot of tasty soup which Di Solomon donated and for mains we had tasty silverside, mustard sauce,

mashed potatoes, carrots, peas and cabbage silver beet mix.

For dessert we had bread and buPer pudding from Di Solomon and stewed apples and custard from Paul SuPon all topped

up with fresh cream.

AOer our large meal we discussed our trip to Christchurch and confirmed numbers and preferred accommoda�on.

Planet Watching

Now that Jupiter is no longer visible in the western evening sky, just three bright planets remain well placed for July viewing: Mars, Saturn, and Venus. Venus remains as bright as ever in the morning sky, although the planet falls steadily towards the northeast horizon as the month progresses.

Mars and Saturn are both prominent high to the north in the early evening sky. Saturn remains more or less stationary in Libra, well to the east of Mars throughout the month, but Mars closes in rapidly as the month progresses. You can track its movement night to night by noting its position relative to Spica, the brightest star in the constellation of Virgo. On 1 July Mars lies a few degrees west of Spica, but by 13 July it lies directly below Spica, and by month end it is almost halfway between Spica and Saturn. The first quarter Moon moves through this part of the sky at the end of the first week in July, forming a compact right-angled triangle with Mars and Spica lying due north at 7 pm on the night of 6 July.

Turning to the southern sky, one of the most famous and much-loved objects in the sky is now prominent throughout the night. Omega Centauri is the biggest and brightest example of a globular cluster: a swirling mass of stars swarming like bees, bound by mutual gravity into a dense spherical cluster, shining with the light of four million suns.

Omega Cen is visible to the naked eye even under city lights, and is easy to find using the Southern Cross and the Pointers as signposts. The chart below shows how. To the naked eye it looks like a fuzzy star; binoculars show a bright hazy spot the size of the full Moon; and even a small telescope is enough to pick out individual stars. Too far south to be visible to most northern hemisphere observers, it’s one of the jewels of the southern sky. If you want to learn just one object to show your grandchildren, this should be it.
