Welcome!Social Bookmarking presentation by Holly BoykinLet me start by saying welcome. Thank you for spending part of your Sunday afternoon with me. My name is Holly Boykin, I am a Technology Coach at Screven County Elementary School and I am over halfway through my masters in Instructional Technology. Today we are going to talk a little about social bookmarking.

Lets begin with establishing a few procedures. There will be some time for discussion and sharing at the end of the presentation, but if you have a question during the presentation, please type a comment in the chat box or raise your hand and I will address you as soon as I can. Ok, lets get started.2Lesson ObjectiveThe participant will define social bookmarking and identify three ways in which a social bookmarking site can be used to enhance instruction.

The objective of this lesson is for you to be able to define social bookmarking and identify at least three ways that social booking can be used to enhance instruction. Our focus question for this lesson is How can social bookmarking be used to enhance instruction? Lets get started.3Does your desktop look like this?

Does your desktop look like this? OR Do you know anyone who has a desktop full of internet icons? If you will just respond by clicking the checkmark if you are someone you know keeps up with their favorite websites by creating icons of them on their desktop. There is a third grade teacher at my school who does this on her computer and her student computers. All the icons look the same, I dont know how she or her students can tell what is what. Thank you for responding, lets move on to the next question.4Do you love bookmarking your favorite sites?

Let me ask another question. Do you love to bookmark your sites on your web browser? Again, you can respond by clicking the checkmark.5Have you ever lost your bookmarks or your favorites?

Have you ever lost your bookmarks? If you have, please respond by clicking the checkmark if this has ever happened to you. I am a big fan of Mozilla and a few years ago, my Mozilla crashed and I lost all of my bookmarks. It took forever to find all of my favorite sites again.

Once you learn how to bookmark your favorite sites on-line, you will never need internet icons on your desktop or favorites or bookmarks on your web browser. Better yet, you will be able to access your favorite sites from any computer that has an internet connection and you will be able to share them with the others.

For those of you who have experience with social bookmarking, please type one or two words that describe an advantage of using a social bookmarking site over traditional web browser bookmarking. Again, thank you for responding. For those of you who are new to social bookmarking, I want to take a minute to quickly explain how social bookmarking sites work. First, you create an account with a service of your choice. I would recommend using a service that has plugs-in that you can add to your browser. I will show an example of a plug-in in a just minute. As you are browsing for websites and you find a site that you want to bookmark, tag the website by typing in keywords that are meaningful to you. The picture that you see on this slide shows what it looks like when you tag a site with delicious. Any comments or questions. Lets move on and talk the advantages of using social bookmarking and how social bookmarking can be used to enhance instruction.14Advantage 1: Efficient

Delicious Button Bookmark Button Tag ButtonOne advantage to social bookmarking sites is that these tools make you more efficient. As I have already said, I love Mozilla Firefox and I use delicious to store my bookmarks. My favorite thing about using these two tools together are the delicious plug-ins that you can install in Firefox. This makes social bookmarking super easy. When I come across a website that I like, I click the tag button, type in some keywords, and go right back to what I was doing. To see my bookmarks, I click on the second button. To open my delicious account, I click the first button. It doesnt get much easier than that! You can install these same types of add-ons with the other social bookmarking websites and with internet explorer. Are there any questions or comments?15Advantage 2: Easy

Another advantage to social bookmarks is that they can be used in the classroom. Several of the fifth grade teachers in my school use their delicious account as the home page on their web browser. When their students open the internet, they can go right to their teachers favorite sites. These teachers prefer using their social bookmark page over having to maintain a website or a blog. When the teachers find a new site, their home page is automatically updated and the site is ready to use.

The picture that you see is a screenshot of my delicious account. My bookmarks are on the right side of the screen. My tags are on the left side. We will look at my delicious account a little more in a minute. Are there any questions or comments?16Advantage 3: Collaboration!

We all know the importance of collaborating with other educators. Social bookmarking makes collaboration effortless! Much like a wiki or an instant message account, when you create a social bookmarking account, you can extend an invitation to others that you want to collaborate with. When you bookmark items, you can add links to their account and you can see what their favorite sites are as well. I am going to bring up my delicious account show you want I mean.
