President’s LetterLast November I wrote about some of the treasures that have been gifted to the Northern Club over the years. I invited members to reach out and let us know if there was something special which was no longer was suitable in their home which might be a treasurethat would make our Club

more handsome.

Member, Simon LonguetHiggins and his wife Libby have gifted the beautiful Edwardian dining room table that now graces the Library and is well used for meetings and meals. The table came from Simon’s grandfather’s home in Sussex via his parent’s farm at Pakiri and was gifted in memory of his parents, long standing member Thomas and his wife Anne.

Past President Sir Rob Fenwick who had loaned the Club an impressive and large oak trophy cabinet that sits on the first floor landing of the Club adorned with silverware got in touch and said for the Club’s 150th he and his family had decided to gift the cabinet. And a suitable plaque is being made now to remind future members of its provenance.

Sir Rob’s daughter Isabel became the fourth generation member of Fenwicks when she joined the Club late last year.

Her two great grandfathers were members –Dr George Fenwick OBE and Sir Frank Mappin Bt. Sir Frank gifted his home and garden to be Auckland Government House which is where the cabinet came from and George Fenwick, Sir Rob’s grandfather,

donated the large collection of rare NZ books and book cases that created the library. Now there are some lovely family connections continuing with the Club.

It must be a good feeling for the Fenwick and the Longuet Higgins families when they visit the Club to see their furniture being well used and cherished in its new home and the memories of their family members living on in their Club.

Next time you are in the Club look more closely at some of the furniture, prints and silverware much of it gifted by members.

Bankside updateIf you have visited the Club you will see the structure of the building is now complete. The first fix of services are well underway and wall linings have begun. Windows have all been site measured and will arrive on site soon.Furniture, fittings, equipment and planted have all been bought and are waiting installation. By April we will really start to see the project coming into its own.

There is a lot happening on site as Alaska move into the final stages. To assist the project, we have agreed with the builder to let them store some of the lift components in several car parks for a short time. We are sorry but this will mean there are fewer than usual car parks so we encourage you to consider alternative ways of either getting to the Club or parking.

Thank you for your patience.
