Social PosterIn trying to come up with a concept for the social poster, I knew immediately that I wanted to do the poster about abortion, taking a pro-life stance. For ideas, I researched a lot about abortion, whether it be statistics, reading biographies about women who have had abortions, or learning more about what goes on when a doctor performs an abortion. I then based my sketches on this research. The main thing that I wanted viewers to get out of the piece was regret, because the majority of women who have abortions regret their choice, and it haunts them the rest of their lives. Concepts include a baby’s bloody footsteps following the mother, a gross presenting representing the “gift” of an abortion, and a statistic representing the number of babies that are aborted worldwide every minute

Final SolutionFor this social poster project, I knew that I wanted to do a Pro-Life poster right from the beginning. It’s something that I’m really passionate about, and I felt like it was a topic I needed to portray. I ended up choosing an idea about representing the guilt that women feel after having an abortion; it haunts the majority of women all of their lives and has many different mental/emotional/physical effects on them. I choose to have a simple picture of a woman in a hospital gown walking across the poster, as if walking away from something that she just did, or a choice that she just made. The hospital gown is meant to be a connection for the viewer to a medical environment; it sets the scene of the poster. I then wanted to have bloody baby footprints following the woman. It’s very eerie, but that’s what I want it to be. I want it to represent the unborn baby’s innocence; it’s meant to be like a ghost that haunts the mother because of her decision to abort her baby and take its life away. I also chose to separate the footprints from the mother, spatially, not only to separate them from the mother and avoid confusion, but also to continue to give the impression that the mother is really trying to leave this choice behind her and forget about it. For the text, I knew that I wanted to have the main headline be liquidy in effect, to give it the feeling of blood. I originally had the text very far off to the left side of the poster, but decided to move it back over toward the center more to balance out the composition; there was a blatant implied line of division right down the middle of the poster that needed to be broken. For the additional informative text, I did research on PAS (post-Abortion Syndrome) and used that information to support my case that abortion is wrong, not only because it kills an innocent life, but also because it has major negative effects

on the majority of young mothers who have abortions.

Poster DisplayWhile coming up with concepts for the poster display, I did a lot of thinking about putting the poster in things and locations that are heavily used by women because they are the primary audience for the poster. I came up with ideas like a compact mirror, a bathroom stall door, a feminine products aisle at a grocery store, and on the soles of a pair of shoes. I tried to stay consistent with the concept of the poster, that the choice of an abortion will haunt you forever; mirrors and shoes are particularly reminiscent to me of being reminded of choices in the past.

Final SolutionsFor this final solution to the applications for this social poster, I chose to place the poster in a mirror in a public women’s restroom, and as a web advertisment on a pro-life website. I chose the women’s restroom mirror because mirrors are associated with looking at yourself and your choices. Also because I feel that the primary audience for this poster is women. I also decided to break the poster apart into two mirrors as opposed to only one because I felt it was more dynamic. I also chose to place the poster as an advertisment on a pro-life website in an effort to support and reaffirm the pro-life position. You don’t see pro-choice advertisments on a pro-life website, so I thought that the poster would be at home on a website like this. The ad could serve as a link to another page or website that has to do with anti-abortion issues, or maybe a website that is dedicated

to sharing the stories of the many women who have had abortions and regretted them.
