Mansfield Shire Council identified an
opportunity to assist local
community groups not yet
leveraging the benefits of online
engagement.
As a means to introduce local
community groups to free popular
social media tools - in particular
Facebook, Instagram and Twitter -
along with information about using
these tools in a community setting,
Council engaged Tammy Atkins
Consulting.
This training was hands-on and
practical and included a discussion
about the pitfalls and opportunities
social media presents for community
groups and individuals.
1
A localised social media training
course was designed and delivered.
This included a tailored sixteen-page
workbook, and the creation of
presentations that could be adapted
to the group's needs and wide-
ranging skill levels.
Hosting the workshops across three
weeks allowed participants time to
complete the template for the social
media plan provided in the
workbook, to have a go using it and
to seek advice if required.

Three-hour workshops were held on
Wednesday 15 February, Wednesday
22 February and Wednesday 1 March
2017 at the Mansfield Library.
Participants were provided with a
tailored workbook that included a
template for a social media plan and
general advice and ideas. The
workbook was co-branded with
Mansfield Shire Council and Central
Hume Primary Care Partnership logos.
A high-order agenda was developed.
Feedback forms distributed at the
conclusion of workshops one and two
which shaped the content and
direction of the next workshop. This
ensured the training program met
participant needs.
Where possible the presentations
were localised and included
examples of nearby and regional non-
profit organisations and companies
already engaging online.
Along with teaching participants
how to best utilise online tools,
these workshops had actual, real
outcomes.
Participants had the opportunity to
request one-to-one assistance
between workshops. Individual
advice, including an analysis of
specific Facebook Pages upon
request, was provided to Mansfield
Mens Shed, A Third Hand, Beolite
Village, Mansfield Produce Store,
Central General Practice, Made in
Mansfield and Mansfield Steiner
School.
A Facebook Event and artwork was
also designed for Mansfield Mens
Shed during the class and followed
up afterwards.

The feedback from participants has been positive and demonstrated their genuine
interest in improving their social media skills for the benefit of their local community
group.
Future improvements to be considered are:
A longer break between workshops, perhaps two weeks
Two-hour workshops, instead of three
Participants to access (or bring) devices with larger screens (laptops instead of ipads
and iphones, or use of a venue with a bank of computers)
More use of the workshop hashtag #LoveMansfield
Ideas for future workshops
Based on participant feedback and discussions at the workshop, ideas for future
training include:
An Air BnB specific workshop
A social media workshop tailored for tourism businesses
A regular drop-in session for general social media support

So knowledgeable and so approachable | Thanks Tammy | Tammy provided a tremendous amount of information and follow-up support. I have started to implement skills learned and are keen to use the notes to continue learning. I am also ready to use the marketing materials Tammy shared as examples of school promotion and using the website tools discussed. A professional presentation catering to all levels of proper knowledge. Thank you Tammy and Sue, Mansfield Shire and Gill | I found the last session quite disjointed, though understand it is difficult with people at such different levels | We now need as a group to sit down and work on our social media plans and to work through the suggestions you have emailed us. Many thanks for the great workshop
