    Communication Studies ProgrammeSynopsisThis is a three-year undergraduate program that prepares our students to work within a fastand developing media and communication environment on graduation. They are equippedwith both theoretical and practical skills. They are given exposure and trainings to allow themto handle real-life communication problems.     This course contextualises the historical development of the social sciences withinworld civilization. 1t introduces students to important social science terminology inpreparation for the understanding of other courses in the faculty. 1t also givesstudents an opportunity to conceptualise and explain social reality through socialscience perspectives.

    • SS! " ' Contemporary Pschology

    The course introduces students to the application of psychological concepts in

    contemporary society. $ain areas of psychology taught in this course are generalpsychology, developmental, social and abnormal psychology. This also includes keytopics such as learning, memory, social communication and motivation which will also

    This is not a conventional history course which deals with events in a chronologicalorder. 1nstead, it discusses history thematically and exposes the student to theprocesses of social and historical transformation.

    • SS! "*# ' %ntroduction to Politicial Science

    This course highlights in detail the range of academic topics in political science toinclude theoretical approaches, basic concepts and definition of politics in the contextof formal government institutions, power relations, value distribution systems andpublic policies. 1n addition, concepts about power, states, sovereignty and politicalculture will be covered. This course also discusses basic political concepts whichlater pave the way for constructing debates and discussions of current political

    affairs. There are four components in this introductory course namely2 the field of political science, political institutions, political processes and politics and society. Withemphasis on these four areas, it is hoped that students will be able to criticallyanalyse and understand the sub*ect of political science

    This course is divided into three ma*or sections, namely, ection 1! 3nderstandingbasic economic concepts, principles and theories2 ection 11! 3nderstanding nationaland global 4conomy, and ection 111! nalysing social issues from the economicperspective. ection 1 exposes students to topics related to the definition of economics, some basic economic concepts, principles and theories and their relationship to us. Theories of demand and supply, the application of elasticity

    concept, as well as different market structures will be discussed in ection 1. ection11 helps students to relate national economy to their daily lives. Topics covered in thissection include measuring a nation5s income, measuring the cost of living, moneyand banking system, unemployment, foreign exchange, international trade and itsimportance among nations. ome basic concepts of open-economy macroeconomicsas well as economic growth and public policy will also be discussed in ection 11. Thefinal section provides students with the opportunity to apply their understanding andknowledge concerning basic economic principles on contemporary social issues thatare related to their respective field of study.

     nthropology and sociology are two distinctive disciplines 63T at the same timefundamentally share one common characteristic, that is, the study of humanphenomena. $ore often than not sociology is perceived as the study of human sociallife in urban societies whereas anthropology is the study of human cultures and ruralcommunities. While sociology is usually perceived to study social behaviors such as *uvenile delinquency, family structure and criminal behaviors, anthropology tends tostudy cultural functions such as the rites of passage, kinship and ritual chastisement.1n this course, the student is expected to understand that anthropology and sociologydo not merely give them the academic insight to society but also plays a fundamentalrole in their lives as they attempt to understand the wider facets of socialrelationships and experiences. $ore importantly, introducing anthropology andsociology will hopefully enable the student to critically question what they already

    know and claim to understand as being part of their society.

    This course will discuss the changes in patterns of communication within a society byfocusing on the historical transition from traditional communication system, itstransformation processes, to its contemporary modern forms. The characteristics of communication that will be focused in this course are human and masscommunication. mong the topics that will be discussed will be culture and society,media literacy, general opinion, persuasion, new communication technology and itseffects on society, and towards information society.

    ocieties are not *ust simply an amorphous mass of people. society ischaracterised by differentiation of people into various categories according to socialdivisions such as gender, ethnicity and class. These divisions form the basis for thedistribution of power, status and opportunities. Who we are depends on how andwhere we fit into society. n understanding of how the intersection of these forceswork in the life of an individual is imperative for all students of social sciences.

    • SS! "2# ' Statistics for Social Sciences

    This course is an introduction to statistical concepts in various fields of the socialsciences. The course consists of! 7"8 0escriptive statistics which cover univariate andmultivariate data, probabilities, the normal distribution and variability sampling2 7&81nferential statistics which deal with hypothesis testing, analysis of variance79#:8, linear correlation and regression analysis.

    This course offers an introduction to the various principles, models, theories, and

    The main topics that are covered in this course are definition, characteristics andtypes of news. The emphasis is given on the ability to write simple news that iscomprehensive, clear and interesting. ;ence, the students are given intensivetraining in writing lead, body and heading of the news. t the same time, students aretaught on how to conduct interview. tudents are also required to be involved in thepublication of $adah amarahan that is specially designed to train students on howto handle newspaper production starting from looking for news, writing the news,

    forming the editorial team, doing layout, selling space for advertisements andmarketing the newspaper.

     SS! &", ' Research (ethods in Social SciencesThe purpose of this course is to give students exposure to the techniques of doingresearch in the social sciences. :arious types of research design such as descriptiveresearch, experiments, case studies, correlation studies, and expost facto researchwill be discussed. tudents will be exposed to the various data collection techniquesincluding observation, survey, document analysis, historical data collection, andlibrary research. 0ata processing and analysis will also be included in the discussion.tudents will also get the experience of using computer in data analysis and reportwriting.

     SS! &".# ' -pproaches to Social %nquiryThis course examines the philosophical foundation for the creation of knowledge inthe social sciences. tudents will be exposed to the ma*or school of thoughtsconcerning social sciences as a science. The course explores the intersectionbetween knowledge, society and culture, and interrogates knowledge production from

    a social science perspective. Topics that will be included in this course are thetheoretical debates in sociology of knowledge, the relationship between empiricalknowledge and cultural values or ideologies.

    This course introduces the students to concepts of desktop publishing 70T/8, whichincludes an overview of word processing, graphic and page composition. 1tfamiliarizes students to the concepts of layout, message, color, typography, formatand components of various publications such as brochures, newsletters, andcorporate slides. t the end of the course, students will develop skills that enablethem to plan and manage a publication pro*ect from conceptualization of ideas,design to production.

    This course introduces the students to the concepts and practices of interpersonalcommunication in two broad parts. =irstly, the basic concepts of interaction amongindividuals. tudents will be introduced to the definitions, functions and ethics of interpersonal communication. Topics on the self and perception in interpersonalcommunication, listening and responding with empathy, verbal and nonverbal

    messages, assertiveness and conflicts are also covered in the first part.econdly, students will be exposed to the more specific contexts of interpersonalcommunication that are interpersonal relationships of friendship, love, family2 conflict2and electronically mediated interpersonal communication.

    $edia law and policy is concerned with the policies and laws that directly shape howthe media operate, that determine the content and channels of expression. The mainfocus of this course is on the relevant aspect of current legal principles. This courseis designed for communication students who anticipate working as professionalmedia practitioners in varied capacities as *ournalists, editors, writers, broadcastprogram directors, photo*ournalists, public relations officers, web site managers, or

    1t is imperative for social science students living in the developing world to have anunderstanding of the theories which govern development practices. 0evelopment is acontroversial term and far from that which has a taken for granted meaning. Thiscourse takes students not only through the various theories on development but alsointroduces feminist critiques to these development theories. n understanding of these critiques is imperative as development is a gendered process.
