Where Am I??By: Kiara Kilbey

Physical Regions/Features

Located on the east coast of Canada, near the Gulf of St. Lawrence, I am a part of the Atlantic Time Zone. I am west of Cape Breton Island, with the beautiful Appalachians as scenery. I am famous for long, sandy beaches, saltwater marshes, sand dunes, red sandstone cliffs, as well as home to many bays and harbours.

My sands contain sedimentary rock mixed with additional materials of high iron concentration, which oxidize upon air exposure.

An unique feature I am known for are the Singing Sands. These sands are a result of the geological properties of white silica sand; the grains rub together while walked on causing a scrubbing noise the singing.

Climate

I have a fairly mild average climate, with warm summers and cold winters the snow arrives as early as November and can stay until April.

In January, I have an average temperature of -7 degrees Celsius. In July, I have an average temperature of 19 degrees Celsius.

Economy

Being surrounded by water, I am dependent on land and the sea for major industry; agriculture, fisheries, and tourism are the primary economies.

I am rapidly gaining more diversity with the growth and addition of more industries.

I am building on the long-established industries with the potential of bringing in new, such as aerospace, bioscience, information technology and renewable energy.

Leisure & Activity

I am popular for various activities of all kind...

Trails for hiking & biking.

Clamming.

Water sports: sailing, kayaking, canoeing, etc.

Golf courses across the beautiful landscape.

Hunting.

Beaches.

Population

My small population of about 145, 800 is divided between rural and urban inhabitants.

I have the third highest rate in Canada of bilingualism with 12.7% of people speaking both English and French.

Ecosystem/Landscape

I am the greenest part of Canada, with a pastoral landscape of rolling, green hills, pristine forests, endless sandy beaches, ocean coves, and red soil. Several laws have been passed by the provincial government to ensure the preservation of my land by regulation. My landscape influences both economy and culture; inspiration for well-known novels has come straight from the the beautiful land. The towns and villages are slow-paced with old world flavour the perfect destination for relaxing locals or tourists. My more rural areas consist of small farms.
