1 SOCIO ECONOMIC PROFILE : MALKANGIRI 1. Location : Malkangiri district is one of the Southern located districts in Odisha. It lies between 81 o 22’ to 82 o 25’ Longitude East and between 17 o 40’ to 18 o 43’ latitude North. It is bounded by the Chhatisgarh State in North, Andhra Pradesh in South, Chhatisgarh in the East and Koraput district in the west. 2. Climate : The climate condition of the district is generally hot with high humidity during April to May and cold during November to December. The monsoon generally breaks during the month of June, Actual annual rainfall of the district is 1096.9 m.m in 2011 which is lower than the normal rainfall (1667.6 m.m). 3. Area and Population : The district has an area of 5791 sq. kms. and 6.13 lakhs of population as per 2011 census. The district accounts for 3.72 percent of the states territory and shares 1.46 percent of the States population. The density of population of the district is 106 per sq. kms. as against 270 person per sq.km. of the state. It has 1045 villages (including 66 un-inhabited villages) covering 7 blocks 7 Tahasils and 1 Subdivisions. As per 2011 census the schedule caste population is 138295 (22.6%) and schedule tribe population 354614 (57.8%). The literacy percentage of the district covers 48.5 against 72.9 of the state. 4. Agriculture : During the year 2010-11, the net area sown was 126 thousand hectares against 4681 thousand hectares of the State. The production of paddy was 3049528 quintals, 15429 quintals maize, 33371 quintals ragi, 626 quintals mung, 4749 quintals biri, 4691 quintals kulthi, and 32991 quintals til, 46661 quintals groundnuts. SOCIO ECONOMIC PROFILE : MALKANGIRI

1. Location : Malkangiri district is one of the Southern located districts in Odisha. It

lies between 81o22’ to 82o25’ Longitude East and between 17o40’ to 18o43’

4. Agriculture : During the year 2010-11, the net area sown was 126 thousand

hectares against 4681 thousand hectares of the State. The production of paddy

was 3049528 quintals, 15429 quintals maize, 33371 quintals ragi, 626 quintals

mung, 4749 quintals biri, 4691 quintals kulthi, and 32991 quintals til, 46661

quintals groundnuts. During 2010-11, the total fertilizers used in Malkangiri

district is about 7147 MT with a breakage of 3991 MT nitrogenous, 2169 MT

phosphatic and 987 MT pottasic and the consumption of fertilizer per hectare is

35 Kg.

5. Irrigation :During the year 2010-11, it is reported by the Deputy Director (Agrl.)

that the irrigation potential created during Kharif and Rabi are 65850 hectares

and 36270 hectares respectively through all sources including major & medium

irrigation projects namely Potteru and Satiguda.

6. Education : There were 1017 nos. of primary schools, 319 nos. of middle schools,

59 no. of secondary schools and 11 nos. of general colleges in the district during

2010-11.

7. Health : The medical facilities are provided by different agencies like Govt.,

Private individuals and voluntary organizations in the district. There are 195 nos.

of the Allopathic medical institutions with 282 beds facilities. 3 nos. of

Homoeopathic dispensaries and 7 nos. of Ayurvedic dispensaries in the district

during the year 2010-11..

8. Veterinary Services : During the year 2010-11, 13 nos. of Hospitals and

dispensaries, 50 nos. of livestock Aid centers were functioning in Malkangiri

district of provide veterinary services to the people.

9. Industry and Mining : During the year 2010-11, 20 nos. of small scale industries

have established with total capital investment of about Rs. 50 lakhs with 89 nos.

of Employment generated in Malkangiri district.

10. Power : Consumption of electricity in Malkangiri district during the year 2010-

11 covers 28.431 million units and villages so far electrified as on 2010-11 is 244

villages which constitutes 23.9% of the total inhabited villages of the district.

11. Tourist : There are 16 nos. of tourist center such as Balimela, Chitrakunda,

Malkangiri, Motu, Satiguda and Rajarani Bandha etc. identified by department of

Tourism and Culture, Odisha . During 2011, 60371 numbers of Domestic tourists

who visited the tourists spots of the district.

12. Transport & Communication : During 2010-11, 243 Kms of State HIghwasys, 84

Kms. Major district roads, 27 kms. of other district roads, 428 Kms. of Panchayat

Samiti Roads, 3545 Kms. of Gram Panchayat Road and 114 Kms. forest roads are

operating in the district.

13. Banking : As on 31st March’2011, there were 20 nos. of schedule commercial

banks having 610 crores rupees deposit and 119 crores rupees credit in the

district.
