    Sociologywas defined as the scientificstudy of human interaction and the

    product of such interaction.Human interaction is a social or group

    concept because it necessarily involves twoor more people relating to and influencingone another. Sociological study is focusedtherefore on the nature of human group life

    and the products of group living. In fact, onecan say that the central concept and subjectmatter of sociological study is the human

    group.

    Sociology provides answers to questions such

    as: What is a group? How do groups come about, change,persist, and weaken?

    What is the function or needs do groupsserve for their members?

    What influence does group membershiphave on the person?

    What patterns of inter-group relationsare found within society? What are the nature and characteristicsof the most encompassing, or total,

    social group that sociologists termsociety?

    Central among the products ofhuman interaction with others is thedevelopment of group customs,

    traditions, values, and standards ofbehaviour. Much sociologicalanalysis is given to elements such as

    these because they are preset inevery group, but more important,because they also constitute the

    A society, for instance, as well asgroups within it, is organized in certainways. From the sociological viewpoint,

    much of this social organization

    (families, political and economicsystems) reflects various groupcustoms, traditions, values, and

    standards of behaviour. Customs,traditions, and values warrant muchsociological attention because they
