The SRS Direct Fired Soil Remediation Unit is designed to clean on-site soils contaminated with petroleum hydrocarbons. The unit thermally evaporates petroleum (volatile organic compounds) contaminants and completely oxidizes them in an afterburner. This advanced technology and mobility allows the SRS to adapt to small or large projects of varying degrees of complexity and soil types. The SRS’s main components include generator set, feed hopper and auger, rotary dryer and discharge auger, baghouse, thermal oxidizer and control house.

The SRS is a two trailer mobile soil thermal desorption system designed to treat and remediate soils that are contaminated with petroleum hydrocarbons while meeting the required emission standards for VOC’s, NOx, SOx, CO and particulate. All major components are mounted on a dual-axle single trailer: 1. Feed System: Hopper and screw feeder 2. Primary Treatment Unit (PTU): Counter-current stainless steel rotary kiln 3. Baghouse equipped with a pulse jet self-cleaning mechanism 4. Secondary Treatment Unit (STU): Thermal oxidizer

The feed system, consisting of feed hopper and auger that feeds the contaminated material into the PTU to be treated. The auger discharges the contaminated soil directly onto an inclined belt that carries it to be passed into the PTU. A baffle plate is applied to the front of the cleated belt enabling the dust to fall into the drum without elutriation out of the system.

The PTU consists of a rotary kiln with burner and afterburner. The burner comes equipped withthe required fuel train and is used to heat the soil to a temperature high enough to destroy thecontaminants without incinerating or destroying the soil itself. The kiln’s drum static pressure is monitored to control release of fugitive emissions. If the kiln pressure exceeds the pressure limit, both the kiln burner and the afterburner will automatically shut down. Treated soil exits the kiln via a drag chain conveyor. The soil is then transferred into a drum mixer equipped with a water spray bar for moisturization to eliminate fugitive emissions. Wetted soil at approximately 10% moisture is discharged from the drum dryer onto a belt conveyor which elevates it for discharge into a clean soil stockpile.

The vaporized gases and dust, a result of the heating and tumbling in the rotary drum, are routed into baghouse for air pollution control. The baghouse filters and collects the dust. The baghouse is arched over the primary kiln to ensure that the temperature in the baghouse ismaintained and to prevent heavier hydrocarbons from condensing in baghouse. In order to keep the system running as efficiently as possible, the pressure differential is measured across the baghouse. High differential pressure (plugged bags) or low differential pressure (ruptured bags) will cause the controller to shut the dryer burner down while the afterburner will continue to operate. Dust captured on the bags during operation is pulsed into a hopper and conveyed in seal augers to the dryer soil discharge point where it is mixed with the cleaned, hot soil in the discharge auger. This sealed auger is connected to the baghouse via ductwork enabling any and all remaining volatiles to be captured in the thermal oxidizer.

Baghouse

The STU is made up of an oxidizer or after burner. The gases, including hydrocarbons (organic compounds found in petroleum products) released from the soil, are sent to an air pollution control device called an afterburner or thermal oxidizer. These devices heat the gases to extremely high temperatures in order to decompose de-compose them, destroying hazardous air pollutants, breaking down hydrocarbon-based pollutants and restoring the chemical makeup of the gas to CO2 and H2O before discharging it. The afterburner operates at a minimum temperature of 1600 F and destroys 99 percent of the released hydrocarbons.

Support and Services

The SRS has a fully integrated solid state control system, typically used to control the start-up sequence, firing rate, linking and safe operation of the rotary kiln. The safeguards include interlocks for the burner air, plant exhaust air, flame verification, stack temperature limit, element break protection and shutdown of the system is afterburner gas treatment is lost. The semi-automatic temperature control mode is straight proportional action. A manual mode is also provided to facilitate quick start up and easy determination of sets. The SRS uses platinum resistance temperature detectors for aggregate and stack functions. Element break protection is provided for aggregate elements and stack elements.Semi-automatic temperature control mode is straight proportional action around the preset balance of the aggregate temperature and the burner position. A manual burner control mode is included. The stack temperature limit is adjustable form 100 to 600 F. When stack temperature control limit is exceeded, the burner modulation valve will be forced to low the fire position. Both soil elements and stack elements have upscale burnout protection; the stack forces the control system to return to low fire position. When the burner flame detector indicates that the flame is not present, the fuel value will de-energize and the control system will return to a pre-purge condition.

Controls

Safety

The system is equipped with a complete Automation Direct control system that is mounted in a control room positioned on the second trailer. This SRS consists of a countercurrent rotary dryer fired by number two oil, exhausting volatilized petroleum products into an afterburner that is also fired by number two diesel. The most significant part of the overall control strategy of the system is the link of monitoring devices to controls in such amanner as to give the afterburner priority and dominance over the main burner. This is accomplished by interlocking content monitors for fuel pressure of both burners to the afterburner fuel. If the afterburner goes down from malfunction or by switching off, the main burner is rendered inoperable by closing the fuel lines. In addition, each burner is linked to individual sensors for both fuel pressure and fire. Both burners are independently linked to the blowers, fans and baghouse monitoring devices to provide safe clean operation. Baghouse Differential Pressure is monitored in the baghouse intake plenum and in the bag house exit plenum. A limit range is monitored by the controller so that either high differential pressure (plugging) or low differential pressure (ruptured bags) will shut the main burner down while the after-burner continues to run.
