A view from Kingfish in Jeffersonville shows the fireworks erupt over the Ohio River during last year's 25th annual Thunder Over Louisville. | file photo

• Details on annual Mudd Sisters' benefit for Alzheimer's.

As the Ohio River rises, so do our expectations for a thrilling weekend.

It’s Thunder folks. Can you feel it?

Glorious flying machines will streak across the sky above Clarksville and Jef-fersonville in the daylight followed by the nation’s grandest pyrotechnics show

electrifying the night.Southern Indiana offers the perfect vantage point.

For people watching, too. What else would you expect from SoIn?

Before you head to the riverfront, there are plenty of things you need to know. Like which streets will be closed. Where to park. And most importantly — where to party.

That’s where this week’s SoIn comes in. Inside you’ll find the ultimate guide to what’s happening

in Southern Indiana for Thunder Over Louisville.Well, I’m not too sure what’s happening with the

city of Jeffersonville because it was difficult reaching a parks official. So it’s like a big surprise. Just like the fireworks.

Buckhead is throwing its annual bash with four options, depending on the fatness of your wallet. Flat 12 Bierwerks and Olive Leaf Bistro are hosting parties as they take advantage of their new spaces on Riverside Drive in Jeffersonville.

With rain in the forecast, the Ohio River is expect-ed to crest sometime Saturday. Debris is scattered on the shores of Clarksville and Jeffersonville, so please be careful in securing that perfect viewing spot.

Best of all, the view is free if you so choose. Just look up.

And let the Thunder roll.— Jason Thomas is the editor of SoIn. He can be

NEW ALBANY — The New Albany Highland Railway elec-tric street car line was founded in 1890, according to a Carnegie news release. The Highland Railway was the first electric

line to begin operation in New Albany in 1891, serving the com-munity of Silver Hills exclusively until 1905. A line from the New Albany Ledger on Aug. 27, 1890, reads, “A gentleman who has traveled over much of the world, after walking over the route of the Highland road, said, ‘It is an inspiration. Nothing can excel it for beauty and grandeur.’”

Carnighan is director of the Silver Hills Historical Society.

The society’s website reads, “The Silver Hills Historical Society believes that memory of places and stories have the power to build authentic communities of shared meaning and values, and is dedicated to sharing the fascinating history of Silver Hills through the inspiring stories of visionaries that have played an integral role in the development and ongoing evolution of Silver Hills.”

Exhibits feature new, ancient processes

Trish Korte works in a variety of media, loving the exploration of each, according to a news release from the Arts Council of Southern Indiana. In recent years she has found that she could incorporate all of her passions for printing and layering in the medium of encaus-tic painting and collage.

Korte has always been drawn to physical history, old books, boxes and other fodder. She includes materials worn by experience, or new materials created through deconstructing or manipulation as a constant thread of her art.

She was captivated by the

ancient history of the encaustic process and uses it as a binder for her work. Layer upon layer of pat-tern and color are encased in wax and resin preserving its place and standing the test of time.

Exploring iPhoneography fea-tures mobile photography created and edited with iPhones. Korte and Schultz are artists and art educators at New Albany High School.

In their quest for cutting edge technology and ideas for the classroom they began to explore iPhone photography last summer when their friend, Lexington artist and photographer Melissa T. Hall

suggested photography apps to try. The Hipstamatic Camera app and Distressed FX were to that the duo began to explore.

They found that iPhoneography is great fun with many editing tools at your fingertips. The exhibit is about exploring new tools for creative photographic and digital images and creating unique surface textures with encaustic medium over the surface of the prints. The encaustic medium is an ages-old process that originates from ancient Egyptian culture. Layering this over the digital and photographic prints helps to preserve them and adds a one-of-a-kind look.
