THE CURRENT SITUATION IN MYANMAR2.
MYANMAR SNAPSHOT
▪ Over 54M people and 10M households (2019)
▪ 66% of the population has no access to the grid
▪ 30,000 + villages are currently not connected
▪ Annual per capita consumption of 156kWh➔ Bottom quintile of nations (energy poverty)
▪ Millions of households rely on battery-‐powered lanterns, kerosene lamps and candles for light and solid fuel for cooking

MYANMAR ENERGY NEEDS ARE GROWING FAST

NATIONAL ELECTRIFICATION SITUATION BY REGIONS
Mandalay Yoma Co. Ltd. – June 2019
GRID EXTENSION, REAL PROBLEMS
One of the most important factors to consider in electrification planning is timing of access. Full grid electrification is expected to take at least 15 years, perhaps longer.
Operation and Maintenance (O&M) costs rise in remote areas since equipment is harder to access and replace due to poorer roads and longer distances, and management costs also rise as activities such as metering and bill collection become more difficult.
Transformer and distribution losses are higher as loads become more spread out.
TRANSITIONAL AND TEMPORARY ELECTRIFICATION SOLUTION
Myanmar has an urgent need for basic power to service lighting for homes, and power for clinics and schools è temporary or transitional electrification option
Non-grid electrification technologies such as mini-grids and solar home systems can provide electricity in the short to medium term
AMBITIOUS GOALS HAVE BEEN SET FOR THE NEXT 15 YEARS
Mandalay Yoma Co. Ltd. – June 2019
The government, along with advisors from World Bank and ADB, has beenworking on a plan called the National Electrification Plan (NEP) where theintent is electricity for all in 2030, with the followingmilestones:
35%
2017 2020
50%
2025
75%
2030
100%
There are 4 main components in the project
1 Grid extension
2 Off-‐grid development
3 Local training
4 Risk & catastrophes management
PERSPECTIVES IN MYANMAR
Mandalay Yoma Co. Ltd. – June 2019
5000 Villages are Key for Electrification through this model
Mandalay Yoma plans for another 100 mini-gridsin 2019/20 & 500 Mini-grids in 3 Years
ENERGY TRANSITION IN ACTION
Bring Energy Access to 20 Million Customers via Decentralized Renewable Solutions by 2020
A STRATEGIC PARTNERSHIP WITH ENGIE
Engie is one of the world’s biggestelectricity utility companies.
The global expertise of Engie combinedwith Mandalay Yoma’s local experienceis key to accelerate Myanmar’selectrification that is a really complexchallenge.
ADVANTAGES OF SOLAR ENERGY
3.
SOLAR ENERGY: AN INCREASINGLY COMPETITIVE SOLUTION
Price of PV modules dropped down during the last decade…
… and therefore PV system total costs strongly decreased.

MYANMAR IS ONE OF THE BEST COUNTRIES FOR SOLAR
Mandalay Yoma Co. Ltd. – June 2019
More than 1400kWh per square meter for most of
the country
MYANMAR IS ONE OF THE BEST COUNTRIES FOR SOLAR
Mandalay Yoma Co. Ltd. – June 2019
1. Specific PV electricity output is in the range between 1400 kWh/kWp and 1600 kWh/kWp (equals to average daily totals between 3.8 and 4.2 kWh/kWp). Very feasible potential for PV generation
2. Seasonal variability in the country is very low, compared to other regions further away from the equator. Ratio between months with max/min GHI is about 1.47 vs Upington, South Africa 2.29 vs Sevilla, Spain, 3.54
DISTRIBUTION OF THE POPULATION VS SOLAR RESOURCES
Mandalay Yoma Co. Ltd. – June 2019
The most denselypopulated areas coincide
with the regions mostsuitable for solar
investment
MINI-GRIDS: DEFINITION
A small-scale electricity generation (10 kW to 10MW) which serves a limited number of consumers via a distribution grid that can operate in isolation from national electricity networks
STRENGTH OF MINI-GRIDS
Good international experience constructing and operating mini-grids that reliably provide electricity –if well-built and well-maintained – for decades.
Many of the component technologies (solar panels, inverters, batteries and diesel generators) are mature and manufactured/deployed at large scales.
Mini-grid’s technologies and practices have been developed, adapted, and tested in many contexts
Can power any kind of residential and industrial loads (inductive and capacitive)
Promote local economic growth through energizing larger productive use loads such as refrigeration, water pumping, saws and agricultural processing
Really competitive price compared to 100% diesel solutions
