China Solar panel industry overview

China has secured its position as one of the largest solar panel manufacturers in the world, with production soaring at impressive rates in the past several years. The industry's production capacity is approximately 2,000MW as of 2007-end(5456MW-global). Actual output is much lower at about 570MW, due mainly to the insufficient supply of solar cells worldwide.

Despite the shortage, outlook in the solar panels manufacturing industry remains generally bright. More makers are entering the line, as evidenced by the 17% growth in the supplier base.

Further, companies are investing in manufacturing systems that will enable them to make solar cells and wafers in-house. Others are expanding into PV power application products where silicon cells do not account for a significant portion of outlay.

1. Monocrystalline silicon panel

The photoelectric transformation efficiency of Monocrystalline silicon panel is about 15% to 24%, it is the most effective technique among solar battery technology, but it is also the most expensive way, so it can’t be implemented widely yet. Steel glass and waterproof resin are often used to encapsulate the monocrystalline silicon enabling the panel tough enough for 15~25 years use.

2. Polycrystalline silicon panel

The photoelectric transformation efficiency of polycrystalline silicon panel is only 12%, 14.9% top. It is more economical compare to monocrystalline, so it can be operated widely. Materials use in polycrystalline is more practical, but the capacity are lower than monocrystalline.

3. Amorphous crystalline

The Amorphous has complete different manufacture process to the previous two. Much simpler process and consume less silicon. It can work with dim light. But it has only 10% photoelectric transformation efficiency, not capable for lighting system electricity generation.

Mono-crystalline Solar Cells

The silicon is melted and crystals formed through a seeding process

Crystals are large – up to 12cm diameter

Sliced into wafers 0.2 – 0.4mm thick

Metal grids are attached front and back to conduct the electricity

Cells are mounted on an acetate base with a glass panel on top to provide protection and waterproofing

About 20% efficient (ie converts 20%of the suns energy falling onto the cell into electricity)

Poly-crystalline Solar Cells

Made of many tiny silicon crystals pieced togetherThe small crystals are inexpensive to make but lose efficiency because the boundaries between the crystals impede the flow of electricitySimilar overall efficiency and cost characteristics as mono-crystalline cells

Pro & corn of solar panel

Pros:No Pollution — Solar power does not release carbon dioxide, sulfur dioxide, nitrogen oxide nor mercury into the atmosphere. Saves you Money — Well, after the initial investment, your utility bills will be much lower and often times there won’t be an amount due at all. Less Consumption — Because it requires no fuel, you will save money on the cost of gasoline. Nearly Maintenance Free — Manufacturers are offering warranties of 20 years and more. Energy Credits — You can build a credit of energy if your solar system produces more energy than you use. It’s Sustainable and Renewable — Fossil fuels such as coal, oil and natural gas are non-renewable and dwindling. Solar energy will never run out. The Noise Factor — They are silent and have no moving parts.

Cons:

$$$ — The main disadvantage is the price. The panels and installation have high starting costs.

Climate Variability — Although solar energy can be used in most climates, the number of hours of sunlight will determine the number of panels you’ll need and what the wattage of power will be.

Aesthetics — Solar panels take up quite a bit of roof space and to some and aren’t pleasant to look at.

Not 24 Hours — They only work when the sun is shining. At night you will have to rely on stored energy from net metering or have an alternative system.

Solar panel development

Solar energy will transfer from isolated system to combined grid system in 2020. Cost of the solar energy is gradually decline from 40/W in 2000 to 33/W in 2003, 27/W in 2004. Average price for solar energy combined system will be RMB3 – 4/KWh, 11~13 times higher then the traditional energy. The key fact to develop the market is to reduce the cost of solar energy, the key fact to reduce the cost is to improve the efficiency of solar panel. Solar panel manufacturing will focus on polycrystalline

silicon Nowadays, the average price of solar energy module:3.8~4.3$/Wp, retail price:5.3$/Wp, by 2020 the price

will be under 1$/Wp.
