Quick Facts

NRG: Official Lincoln Financial Field energy provider *The Solar North solar arrays generate power, but the renewable energy certificates associated

with that generating source are sold to others.

Solar power from NRG — making electricity and making a statementThe NRG team delivered to Lincoln Financial Field a stadiumwide energy solution that also included on-site power generation. Combining both wind- and solar-powered elements, this electricity generation project consists of more than 11,000 solar panels placed on the south facade of the stadium, the stadium’s canopy roof, adjacent pavilions and also over the stadium parking lot. Rounding out the project are 14 energy-generating micro-wind turbines placed along the top of the stadium over the north and south end zones.

One of the challenges for the Lincoln Financial Field project was that not only did the panels need to withstand exposure to the elements, but the rooftop panels also needed protection from potential shock waves from fireworks launched from above during games, which could cause damage to the panels.

Touchdown!NRG installed the 11,000 solar panels in framed modules with a robust mounting structure, capable of withstanding extreme wind and weather. To protect panels during fireworks displays accompanying home touchdowns, NRG undertook extensive integrity testing and incorporated enhanced structural features into those units

Enhancements were also incorporated for the 14 micro-wind turbines. A braking system was installed, ensuring timely stoppage if ever necessary.

NRG goes beyond being the official Lincoln Financial Field energy provider. We’ve introduced sustainability, once

again, to the national stage. From a renewable energy standpoint, the solar panels represent the largest array of its kind in the Philadelphia area, as well as for any pro football stadium. Combined with the wind turbines, the NRG installation’s annual production is more than four times the power consumed during Eagles regular season home game days*, demonstrating the team’s commitment to production of clean energy.

It’s in the detailsThe NRG attention to every fan’s game day experience goes beyond panels and power. Visually attractive solar panel arrangements are incorporated into stadium entrance areas, ensuring that every visitor sees the team’s commitment to production of sustainable energy. And way up high, the 14 micro-wind turbines are painted to match the precise gray used in team colors.

NRG and pro football — a natural partnershipThe energy generation project at Lincoln Financial Field is one of a series of pro football stadium projects developed by NRG. Every solution exemplifies the ability to incorporate the function and beauty of solar into both new and existing architecture. Other stadium energy projects include FedExField in Landover, MD; Patriot Place, adjacent to Gillette Stadium in Foxborough, MA; and MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, NJ.
