Soldiers’ Deaths & Burials in the Arcadia

Valley

1861-1865

The following is mainly the work of researched by John Abney, president of the Iron County

Historical Society and board member of the Friends of Fort Davidson. Names of Iowa and

Wisconsin Soldiers were gleaned from the rosters of the two states’ units by Walt Busch, Site

Administrator, Battle of Pilot Knob State Historic Site.

Records Relating to the Removal of Bodies from Park View Cemetery and Other Area Locations

By John Abney

Four sources relate to the removal of soldiers’ remains from in and around the Arcadia

Valley covering the entire Civil War period of 1861-1865 and not just the Battle of Pilot Knob.

Unfortunately, though all were created from the same records, none of the sources agree with

the other when it comes to the names involved or the overall number of remains reinterred.

The sources include two volumes from the Quartermaster General’s Roll of Honor Names of Union

Soldiers Who Died in Defence [sic] of the American Union… and two other Quartermaster General

reports that summarize the data from the removal and reinternment of the soldiers’ remains. A

side by side comparison of the sources is shown below.

An additional benefit of these sources is that two of them (Volumes XII and XX of the Roll of

Honor) contain the names of the soldiers when they could be identified. A summary of the

known versus unknown soldiers is shown below.

Location

Volume XII Volume XX

Known Unknown Known Unknown

Ironton Cemetery 108 109 Surrounding area 28 Peck’s farm 1 Greason’s farm 1 East of post office 1 Ironton 85 94 Pilot Knob 8 5 Totals 111 137 93 99 Overall Totals 248 192

Again, we know that what was then called the Ironton Cemetery is now called Park View

Cemetery and we know this because of an eye-witness account to the bodies being removed.7

Supposedly though, as the title of the Roll of Honor implies, these were the bodies of Union

soldiers only. If that is correct, then where were the Confederates buried? Not counting the

Confederate dead that were buried in Fort Davidson’s rifle pits and the hills surrounding the fort

after the battle in 1864, we know that Sterling Price left behind some 175 men that either died of

their wounds or were mortally wounded.8

3

So where were they buried? I asked this question to Walt Busch, Site Administrator for

the Battle of Pilot Knob State Historic Site, when I gave him a copy of the list of names from

Volume XII of the Roll of Honor. Looking down that list, he quickly noticed the name of one

of the dead, Captain W. W. Craig of Jeffries’ Regiment.9 Walt explained that Jeffries’ Regiment

was part of the Confederate 8th Missouri Cavalry and that Craig had died during the battle of

Pilot Knob on 27 September 1864.10 Based on this, we know that at least one Confederate

soldier was buried in the Ironton Cemetery and was unintentionally moved along with the

remains of the Union soldiers when the bodies were disinterred after the war. As to the other

Confederate soldiers that died after the Union regained control of the area, the evidence does

not support any clear conclusion.

Taking into account that the remains of one Confederate soldier were unintentionally

moved, could a large number of the unidentified remains be those of Confederates? The earliest

death date recorded for the Union soldiers was that of Private William Greenstreet on 6

September 1861.11 We know that either records or Greenstreet’s Ironton grave marker recorded

this date. As the Union was in control of the area for all but a very short time in the fall of 1864,

it really doesn’t make sense that nearly half the graves of the soldiers buried in the Ironton

Cemetery would be unknown. Unless, of course, the bodies were those of the Confederate

wounded who later died and were buried unceremoniously, without markers (or burial records)

by the Union forces, then back in control of the area. Walt added another interesting possibility

when he looked at the list and remarked that the bodies of the 28 unknown soldiers removed

from the countryside surrounding Ironton could possibly have been those of the Confederates

who were buried where they fell in the hills surrounding Fort Davidson.

Yet, popular opinion in both the North and the South during the first years following

the war was very much against giving any honor to the other side’s dead. The National

Cemetery system was created, in large part, to ensure that the Union dead were given their

proper honor and to ensure their graves would be maintained.12 Through 1871 when the

reinternment program was completed, the remains of over 300,000 Union soldiers would be

moved and reburied at a cost of over four million dollars.13 While publicly funded in the North,

private funding was used in the South to recover and reinter tens of thousands of the Southern

dead.14

Could this be why Captain Craig’s name appears in Volumes XII of the Roll of Honor,

but not in Volume XX? Could some of the other unidentified remains been those of

Confederate soldiers who were identified as such before reburial at Jefferson Barracks National

Cemetery? If so, where were Captain Craig and the other Confederate soldiers reburied? While

these questions may never be answered, work continues verify what has been found thus far. 1 Quartermaster General’s Office, Roll of Honor (No. XII) Names of Soldiers Who Died in Defence[sic] of the American Union, Interred in New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Maryland, Virginia, Illinois, Missouri, Iowa, Arkansas, Texas, Utah Territory, and on the Pacific Coast.
