Dear Friends in Jesus Christ,
It is common that people write a WILL before they die.
After the death of that particular person, the WILL is re-
vealed to the concerned persons, especially to his/her chil-
dren; it is the duty and bounded obligation of the con-
cerned persons to fulfill the WILL of the deceased without
any exception. If we look into the life of Jesus we find that
Jesus came into this world, lived in this world, died for us
and raised on the third day; the fulfillment of the WILL of
the Father. That is why usually we say the New Testament
is the fulfillment of Old Testament. Yes, the Old Testament
is the WILL of the Father and the New Testament is the
fulfillment of the WILL of the Father through Jesus. This is
exactly what Jesus tells us on this day of Ascension that,
“Thus it is written that Christ would suffer and rise from the
dead on the third day”.
Now just like the father, the Son Jesus also has written a
WILL for His children to fulfill and that reads like this
“Repentance of the forgiveness of sins would be preached
in His name to all the nations”. Yes, this is the WILL of Je-
sus, to be fulfilled by you and I, and how many of us are
ready for this? This is a call, a call of challenge, a chal-
lenge to repent. Are you ready to repent and turn to
Christ? If we are not able to repent, how can we preach
about repentance?
Jesus asks His disciples to begin the ministry from Jerusa-
lem, because according to St. Luke, it is from Jerusalem
Temple Jesus began His ministry of preaching. So, the
same way as Christians we have begun our ministry in
Jesus from this Church through baptism; so we need to
begin from here the preaching of repentance. This is the
same demand we are asked at the beginning of the Mass,
for repentance. Jesus says “stay in the city until you are
clothed with the power from on high”. Yes, every weekend
when we come for Mass, and if we have not received the
spirit of repentance through the Eucharist, Jesus asks us
to stay back here with Him until we receive it. It means, the
Eucharist and other sacraments are meant to bring the
message of repentance in our lives and that is why we say
the celebration of Mass should be continued outside the
church through our lives. Yes, that could be possible only if
we have received the spirit of repentance in our lives.
As we celebrate this great feast of the Ascension of our
Lord, let us ask for the spirit of repentance. It is good to
remember that Jesus’ departure and ascension was both
an end and a beginning for His disciples. So the same way
let this Ascension of our Lord be an end to our sinful way
of life and a new beginning of life for each one of us, a new
beginning of true repentance, so that we may continue to
rejoice in the Lord and praise Him always. God Bless.
