PINCH VALVE GENERAL INFORMATION What is a Pinch Valve?

The Bio-Chem Fluidics pinch valve is a solenoid-operated device. It is designed for opening and closing tubing to achieve controlled fluid flow. When the solenoid is energized, the valve plunger is retracted. This either opens the tubing (normally closed configuration) or closes the tubing (normally open configuration). A valve in the 3-way configuration has both a normally open and a normally closed flow path, which are operated simultaneously. When the solenoid is de-energized, a spring returns the tubing back to its original open or closed position.

Why a Pinch Valve rather than an Isolation Valve?

Compared to an isolation valve that uses a diaphragm, the pinch valve has several distinctive advantages: An unobstructed flow path with minimal pressure drop. Resistant to damage from particulates in the fluid stream. Ease of changing the wetted surfaces (i.e. the tubing for pinch valves) between operations. Easy sterilization of fluid path. No dead volume inside the valve.

FEATURES OF BIO-CHEM VALVE™ PINCH VALVES Choice of tubing configurations.

The pinch valves are supplied with tubing already inserted in the valve: 2-way valves: one 12-inch (30cm) tubing section. 3-way valves: two 6-inch (15cm) tubing sections joined by a “Y” connector.

Dual tubing configurations (i.e. two tubes being operated simultaneously) are offered for smaller tubing sizes. Multi-tube pinch valves with 4, 6 or 8 tubes and normally open operation are also available.

Choice of tubing materials.

Bio-Chem Fluidics offers two high-purity medical grade tubing materials for pinch valves: Platinum cured silicone tubing. C-Flex® tubing.

These tubing options have been specifically developed to withstand the rigors of usage with pinch valves. The tubing will not stick shut even after prolonged closure. Excellent tubing memory characteristics permit unencumbered flow when the valve is in the open position. In combination with the Bio-Chem Valve pinch valves, both tubing options are rated for over 300,000 cycles. It is also possible to use the pinch valves with tubing other than that supplied by Bio-Chem Fluidics. In that case, Bio-Chem Fluidics will adjust the valve settings to meet the exact requirements of the customer’s tubing.

Stroke set for each individual valve.

The stroke (i.e. the travel between the open and closed positions) is individually set and tested for each pinch valve. Through this process, we ascertain: ~95% full flow in the open position. No leakage in the closed position at rated

pressures. Efficient valve operation with minimal

power usage and heat generation. Maximum tubing life.

Easy tube insertion.

The tubing entry area of the valve body is contoured to guide the tubing into its seat.

Tubing securely seated.

The tubing is securely seated in a groove. The gap between the valve plunger and the valve’s anvil is slightly smaller than the tubing’s outer diameter. The tubing is held in place during operation without need for mechanical locking features. Fluid flow and pressure drop are minimally affected, achieving around 95% of full flow given the nominal tubing inner diameter.

Long life cycles.

Bio-Chem Valve™ pinch valves are designed to last for a minimum of 2 million open-and close cycles. By choosing optional alternative body and plunger materials, the valve life can be extended even further. Thanks to the precise stroke adjustment performed on each valve, we also optimize the tubing life. Both the silicone and the C-Flex® tubing are rated for over 300,000 life cycles.

Continuous duty.

Bio-Chem Valve™ pinch valves can remain in the fully energized state indefinitely without damage to the valve or the tubing.

Low power consumption and minimal heat generation.

The pinch valves’ efficient construction permits the use of low wattage solenoid coils, ranging from 2.8 Watt for 075-series valves to 8.0 Watt for 150-series valves. Heat generation is correspondingly low. Both power usage and heat generation can be lowered further by stepping down the voltage after actuation. With most of the pinch valves, voltage reduction of 66% is possible, reducing power consumption by 89%.

Optional features, particularly for medical applications.

Override button for manual opening or closing of tubing. This feature provides flow control in the case of power loss. It also facilitates tubing changes, especially when working with hard tubing, such as Tygon®.

Pre-configured, factory-installed mounting flanges. The flanges can be fixed so as to be on the inside or the outside of the bulkhead. The customer can choose the orientation of the mounting holes vis-à-vis the tubing. The flanges are securely fixed to ensure the valves permanent position despite of frequent manipulation and tubing changes.

“Quiet” operation. Through the use of noise-dampening materials on internal valve components, the noise generated at actuation of 075-series and 100-series pinch valves is reduced dramatically.

The noise level drops from approximately 72 dB to 52dB. This feature is recommended in noise-sensitive environments, such as hospitals. Position feedback sensor. An infra-red optical sensor can be factory-mounted on the pinch valve. The sensor detects the position of the valve pusher assembly. It sends an electrical signal back to the controller confirming the open or closed valve position. PPS body material. For applications where the valve body may come into contact with corrosive liquids, chemically resistant glass-filled PPS material is available for the valve body and plunger. Use of the PPS body extends the valve life to 5 million cycles.

PINCH VALVE TUBING

A. Platinum-cured silicone tubing

1. Test Standards. The Bio-Chem Valve silicone tubing is tested in accordance to the standards set by the United States Pharmacopoeia National Formulary XVII, 1990, Class VI Biological Test for Plastics. It is FDA Masterfile listed (MAF 819).

2. Durability. This tubing has been selected for use with pinch valves. Platinum curing performed on the tubing during the extrusion process imparts superior strength and durability. The byproduct of this process, ethanol, is completely removed. The tubing has a low compression set and will not stick shut even after prolonged periods in the closed position. Excellent memory characteristics ensure full opening and unencumbered flow. The silicone tubing is rated for 300,000 pinch valve cycles.

3. Sterilization. The silicone tubing can be sterilized through steam autoclaving, boiling, dry heat, steam, and gamma radiation.

4. Gas permeability. Silicone tubing has a poor gas permeability rating.

Besides being already installed in the Bio-Chem Fluidics pinch valves, silicone tubing is also available in 50-foot (15-meter) coils. The coils can be ordered under the part numbers listed below:

B. C-Flex® tubing

1. Test Standards. The C-Flex® tubing used on the Bio-Chem Valve pinch valves is tested in accordance to the standards set by the United States Pharmacopoeia National Formulary XVII, 1990, Class VI Biological Test for Plastics. It is FDA Masterfile listed.

2. Material. The C-Flex® tubing material is a thermoplastic elastomer based on styrene-ethylene-butylene. It does not contain leachable plasticizers.

3. Chemical compatibility. C-Flex® can be used with many acids and alkalis. It is not recommended for use with oils and organic solvents.

4. Durability. This tubing has been selected for use with pinch valves. The tubing has a low compression set and will not stick shut even after prolonged periods in the closed position. Good memory characteristics ensure full opening and unencumbered flow. The C-Flex® tubing is rated for 200,000 pinch valve cycles.

5. Sterilization. The C-Flex® tubing can be sterilized through steam autoclaving, ethylene oxide (ETO), and gamma radiation.

6. Gas permeability. C-Flex® tubing has a fair gas permeability rating. It has lower gas permeability than silicone.

Besides being already installed in the Bio-Chem Fluidics pinch valves, C-Flex® tubing is also available in 50-foot (15-meter) coils. The coils can be ordered under the part numbers listed below:

B. Valves for silicone or C-Flex® tubing to be installed by the customer

The Bio-Chem Fluidics valves can be purchased without the tubing installed. The customer can then order the tubing separately and add the tubing at a later time.

For this option, follow the same valve selection process as outlined above. Then follow the part number convention process for the determining the valve part number. C. Valves for customer-specific tubing

If the customer intends to use the pinch valves with tubing other than Bio-Chem Fluidics-supplied silicone or C-Flex® tubing, this requirement can be accommodated. The customer should provide a sample of the tubing to Bio-Chem Fluidics, who will select the appropriate valve size and adjust the stroke and force settings to match the tubing diameter and durometer.

Bio-Chem Fluidics will assign a special part number to this valve.

PINCH VALVE PART NUMBER CONVENTIONS

A. Single or dual tube pinch valves

The part numbers are constructed according to the following pattern:

1. Shell size corresponds to the diameter of the solenoid shell. Available sizes are 075P (3/4” diameter), 100P (1.0” diameter) and 150P (1.5” diameter).

2. Flow path options are “2” (2-way), “3” (3-way), “D2” (dual 2-way), and “D3” (dual 3-way).

3. Flow configuration options are “NC” (normally closed), “NO” (normally open), and “MP” (3-way with one port normally open and the other port normally closed).

4. Voltages offered are “12” (12 Vdc) and “24” (24 Vdc).

5. Tube size designators are assigned according to the following table:

6. Tubing material options are “S” (silicone) and “B” (C-Flex®). In case the valve is to be delivered without tubing, the material designating letter is replaced by a hash mark (“#“). The tubing size designator must still be indicated as before.

7. Valve options can be designated by the following letters, which should be added in the sequence indicated below:

4 – PPS body material. Q – “quiet” valves, available for 075P and 100P normally closed valves. M – mounting holes situated on the bottom of the valve body. F – position feedback sensor. K – manual override button, available for 075P and 100P valves without dual tubing. When the manual override button is chosen, the “M” for mounting holes cannot be selected. L – factory-installed mounting flange, available for 075P and 100P valves. The flanges will be installed at 90º to the tubing path. When an option is not selected, the corresponding part number position is simply left blank.

For use with soft-walled tubing with inner diameters from 0.010”/0.25mm to 1/16”/1.59mm.

Features of standard 075P series pinch valves.

Continuous duty solenoid operated valve. Can remain fully energized for indefinite time period.

to protect tubing and extend valve life. Chemically resistant PPS plunger and

D. Options 1. Glass-filled PPS body material (suffix = “4”). Changing the body material from ASA/PC to PPS

provides two advantages: a. Enhanced chemical resistance in the case of spills onto the body or when using aggressive

cleaning agents on the valves. b. Longer cycle life, extending the valve life cycles from 2 million to 5 million.

2. “Quiet” operation (suffix = “Q”). Implementing the “quiet” option reduces the valve noise level from about 72 dB to about 52 dB. The “quiet” option is available for: a. 075P2NC-way normally closed valves. b. 075P2NO-way normally open valves. The “quiet” option cannot be used on 075P3MP three-way valves. The noise level of the 3-way valves is inherently attenuated by tubing dampening the motion in both directions.

3. Mounting holes (suffix = “M”) situated on the bottom of the valve body (i.e. the plastic). The dimensions are as follows: a. A (thread) = #2-56 b. B = 0.50 inches / 12.7mm center-to-center c. C = 0.125 inches / 3.2mm The mounting holes cannot be used in combination with the manual override button.

4. Position feedback sensor (suffix = “F”). The feedback sensor can be mounted on 075P pinch valves in the normally closed and the three-way configurations. (Please see page XX for details about this option.)

5. Manual override button (suffix = “K”). The manual override button is available for all 2-way and 3-way valve configurations. Its uses include: a. Flow control for emergencies during electric power loss. b. To facilitate tubing changes.

fit. b. Can be cleaned with alcohol, bleaches and other

cleaning agents. c. White color. d. Distance between mounting hole centers = 1.25” /

3.2cm. e. The flanges can be installed at angles other than 90º to

the tubing and/or with orientation to the inside of the bulkhead upon request.

This mounting flange can be purchased as a stand-alone item under part number MFP-075. Please see page XX for details.

E. “Hit and Hold” voltage reduction Within 100 ms of valve actuation, the voltage required to hold the valve in position can be reduced. The voltage step-down results in the dual benefits of power conservation and heat reduction. The amount of the voltage reduction possible is 66% (i.e. 24 Vdc to 8 Vdc or 12 Vdc to 4 Vdc) for all 075P pinch valves that do not incorporate the “quiet” feature. This results in a power usage / heat generation drop of 89%.

The 66% voltage reduction can be accomplished using the Bio-Chem Fluidics CoolCube-R hit-and-hold circuit. Please see page XX for details.

For the 075P pinch valves with the “quiet” feature, voltage can be reduced by 33% (i.e. 24 Vdc to 16 Vdc and 12 Vdc to 8 Vdc) after 100 ms for a power usage drop of 55%.

E. Options 1. Glass-filled PPS body material (suffix = “4”). (Not available for dual-tubing valves.) Changing the

body material from ASA/PC to PPS provides two advantages: a. Enhanced chemical resistance in the case of spills onto the body or when using aggressive cleaning

agents on the valves. b. Longer cycle life, extending the valve life cycles from 2 million to 5 million.

2. “Quiet” operation (suffix = “Q”). Implementing the “quiet” option reduces the valve noise level from about 72 dB to about 52 dB. The “quiet” option is available for: a. 100P2NC-way normally closed valves. b. 100P2NO-way normally open valves. The “quiet” option cannot be used on 100P3MP three-way valves. The noise level of the 3-way valves is inherently attenuated by tubing dampening the motion in both directions.

3. Mounting holes (suffix = “M”) situated on the bottom of the valve body (i.e. the plastic). The dimensions are as follows: 1. A (thread) = #4-40 2. B = 0.687 inches / 17.5mm center-to-center 3. C = 0.218 inches / 5.54mm The mounting holes cannot be used in combination with the manual override button.

4. Position feedback sensor (suffix = “F”). The feedback sensor can be mounted on 075P pinch valves in the normally closed and the three-way configurations. (Please see page XX for details about this option.)

5. Manual override button (suffix = “K”). The manual override button is available for all 2-way and 3-way valve configurations except for dual-tubing valves. Its uses include: a. Flow control for emergencies during electric power loss. b. To facilitate tubing changes.

6. Factory-installed mounting flange (suffix = “L”). The mounting flanges are available for all 100P pinch valve configurations. They will be installed at a 90º angle to the tubing with the orientation to the outside of the bulkhead. a. 30% glass-filled polypropylene material provides secure

fit. b. Can be cleaned with alcohol, bleaches and other

cleaning agents. c. White color. d. Distance between mounting hole centers = 1.56” /

3.97cm. The footprint is identical as that of Sirai pinch valves.

e. The flanges can be installed at angles other than 90º to the tubing and/or with orientation to the inside of the bulkhead upon request.

This mounting flange can be purchased as a stand-alone item under part number MFP-100. Please see page XX for details.

F. “Hit and Hold” voltage reduction Within 100 ms of valve actuation, the voltage required to hold the valve in position can be reduced. The voltage step-down results in the dual benefits of power conservation and heat reduction. The amount of the voltage reduction possible is:

66% (i.e. 24 Vdc to 8 Vdc or 12 Vdc to 4 Vdc) for all 100P pinch valves that do not incorporate the “quiet” feature. This results in a power usage / heat generation drop of 89%.

50% (i.e. 24 Vdc to 12 Vdc or 12 Vdc to 6 Vdc) for all 100P pinch valves with the “quiet” feature. This results in a power usage / heat generation drop of 75%.

The voltage reduction can be accomplished using the Bio-Chem Fluidics CoolCube hit-and-hold circuit. Please see page XX for details.

OPTICAL POSITION FEEDBACK SENSOR

Position feedback is provided through a compact, factory-mounted infrared optical sensor that instantaneously detects the position of the pinch valve pusher/armature assembly. An electrical signal is transmitted back to the instrument control system, confirming whether the valve is open or closed. With no moving parts, the optical sensor has a virtually unlimited life. The position feedback sensor is an essential feature in many critical operations, such as in life-sustaining medical applications.

FlowTest™

Automated controller for micro-fluidic systems

FlowTest™ is an automated controller that operates up to eight fluidic control devices (FCD’s, such as solenoid valves and pumps), each of which can be run in parallel or independently. Programming is carried out using the dedicated CosDesigner™ software running on a PC or a laptop computer. Multiple programs can be set up, stored and managed. The fields of use include laboratory and industrial applications requiring precise liquid transfers, sampling and injection.

FlowTest™ can also operate as a stand-alone instrument, without a computer. In this mode, programs are loaded using a USB key. The controller is operated by “run” and “stop” buttons conveniently located on top of the control unit.

Click-N-Seal barbed fittings allow you to feel and hear that the fitting is properly installed. When the correct torque is reached, the cap emits an audible click.
