If you are visiting an area at risk fromtsunamis, check with the hotel, motel, orcampground operators for evacuationinformation.

Plan and practice evacuation routes. Ifpossible, pick an area 100 feet or more abovesea level, or go at least two miles inland, awayfrom the coastline. You should be able to reachyour safe location on foot within 15 minutes. Beable to follow your escape route at night andduring inclement weather.

Discuss tsunamis with your family.Discussing tsunamis ahead of time will helpreduce fear and anxiety and let everyone

know how to respond. Review flood safetyand preparedness measures with yourfamily.

Talk to your insurance agent . Homeowners’policies do not cover flooding from atsunami. Ask your agent about the NationalFlood Insurance Program (NFIP).

Use a NOAA Weather Radio with a tone-alertfeature to keep you informed of local watches

and warnings.Ways to protect property:

Avoid building or living in buildings withinseveral hundred feet of the coastline. Theseareas are most likely to experience damageform tsunamis, strong winds, or coastalstorms.

Elevate coastal homes. Most tsunamiwaves are less than 10 feet high.

Follow flood preparedness precautions.Many of the precautions that are appropriatefor floods are also appropriate for tsunamis.

Consult with a professional for advice aboutways to make your home more resistant totsunami and water. Also, there may beways to divert waves away from yourproperty.
