A YeAr in reviewThis is the time for laying the groundwork for J.C. Blair’s next hundred years. With the implementation of the Affordable Care Act, it is imperative that we prepare for the expected changes and continue to best serve our community. This translates to acquiring the resources needed to meet our mission.

Our Board and administrative leadership are solid in our commitment to this community. Our vision is to bring physicians and services back to J.C. Blair that we have lost over the years. We have explored a number of solutions and have narrowed our focus on a potential partnership with PinnacleHealth in Harrisburg.

Pinnacle is the only potential partner that has consistently assured us that we share the same mission — to bring medical services to our patients in Huntingdon County, to provide the right care, at the right time, in the right place, which is here at home where our patients live.

As we move forward with this potential partnership and work through the details, we need the trust and support of our community. The residents in our community must be confident in choosing J.C. Blair when they need health care. Choose a J.C. Blair physician. Choose to use our lab, our medical imaging, emergency and maternity services.

J.C. Blair excels in the services we offer our community. This year, our Women’s Imaging Center became the first and only imaging center in the region to offer digital breast tomosynthesis (3D mammography), the highest quality screening available for the early detection of breast cancer. Our Echocardiography Program was awarded a three-year accreditation by the Intersocietal Accreditation Commission for its quality patient care in compliance with national standards. Our occupational health director is the only certified medical examiner in the region qualified to provide required commercial driver’s license physicals. This community has a lot to take pride in, when considering what this small-town, community hospital has to offer.

If we do not have the support of our community, J.C. Blair will not be able to continue to operate, with or without a partner. The impact of closing J.C. Blair would be devastating to this community. The loss of more than 500 jobs, supporting an annual payroll of $25 million, which is invested in this community’s businesses, real estate and services, would be insurmountable.

We all have a stake in the success of J.C. Blair in this community. Let’s work together to strengthen J.C. Blair so that we can be here for the next 100 years.

Respectfully submitted,

Frances V. Vaughn Lisa M. Mallon Chair of the Board President and CEO

One in every seven women in the United States will

develop breast cancer in her lifetime. That’s a scary

statistic. However, when breast cancer is diagnosed

at an early stage, the five-year survival rate is

97 percent. The Women’s Imaging Center at

J.C. Blair offers the latest technology so our patients

have the best chance of a positive outcome. We also

work with the Hospital Foundation to increase

awareness of breast cancer so that women — and

men — in our community understand how regular

screening can save lives.

The Women’s Imaging Center became the first

and only imaging center in the region to offer

3D mammography, also known as digital breast

tomosynthesis. This new technology converts digital

breast images into a three-dimensional mammogram

that allows the radiologist to examine breast tissue

one layer at a time. The radiologist can spot very

small cancers, increasing a breast cancer patient’s

chances for survival. A screening trial reported that

breast tomosynthesis plus digital mammography

provided a 27 percent improvement in cancer

detection rates, with a 40 percent increase in invasive

cancer detection.

improving Women’S HealtH now.

3D mammography may rule out worrysome false positives,

reducing the number of women who are called back for a

diagnostic mammogram.

“in addition to the most up-to-date technology in breast imaging, J.C. Blair provides women with privacy, respect, genuine compassion, patient comfort and convenience. we are very fortunate to have this type of facility in our small town. thank you, J.C. Blair, for being there for the women of huntingdon County.”

Our technicians conduct a tomosynthesis exam at

the same time as the regular digital mammogram.

During the tomosynthesis part of the exam, the

camera sweeps over the breast, taking multiple

images in just seconds and creates a 3D image of the

breast tissue in one-millimeter layers, allowing the

radiologist to see breast tissue details that are hidden

in a flat image.

3D mammography is a wonderful example of

neighbors helping neighbors. The purchase of

this equipment was made possible by a leadership

donation from Mrs. Margaret “Peg” Pettinger

through our Hospital Foundation. The 2013

Pennsylvania Pink Zone basketball events also raised

$20,000 for our women’s breast health initiatives.

The Women’s Imaging Center performs more

than 4,000 mammograms each year, offering high-

quality screening and diagnostic medical care in a

compassionate manner to all women who live in, work

in, or visit Huntingdon and surrounding areas.

J.C. Blair’s mammography team of Jaime

weikert, Penny Shope and Jenny Doyle make

the mammography experience as comfortable

as possible, treating each patient with

courtesy, respect, sensitivity and support.

A small hospital with a big heart“i recently was diagnosed with breast cancer and need to express my sincere gratitude to the mammography department at J.C. Blair memorial hospital. As each step of my journey progressed, the department worked quickly in scheduling and performing necessary tasks and procedures i needed. within 18 days, the tumor was found, diagnosed, and removed.

i beg everyone who has been putting off making their mammogram appointment or who has never had one done to please make an appointment. i am living proof early detection works. Because my tumor was small and found early, my treatment should be minimal. you need to know that if you would ever be facing such a diagnosis, you will receive the best care and compassion possible from the trained professionals here. Receiving a diagnosis of breast cancer can be overwhelming and emotional, but being surrounded and cared for by these people made me feel comforted and that things would be oK.

our local hospital is a small hospital with a big heart, and that is one of the reasons i am so thankful to call huntingdon my home.”

Thinking Pink at J.C. Blair

Most people are aware of breast cancer, and even know

that early detection is vital. Still, women who are busy

balancing the demands of career and family often need

a reminder that they should take action to protect

their health. The Hospital and our Foundation strive

to help women in our community remember to make

the necessary appointments.

Grants from the Susan G. Komen, Pittsburgh and

the American Cancer Society to the Alliance for Breast

Care at J.C. Blair underwrote grants to promote

Breast Cancer Awareness Month locally. This included

a “Wear Pink Day” luncheon and supplies for the

digital mammography suite.

We also sponsored events for community residents

to learn more about prevention, screening and the

importance of early detection of breast cancer. The

hospital held a mammography screening day and

women’s health fair, including convenient Saturday

morning hours and weekday evening appointments.

Our Wear Pink Luncheon was held at Juniata

College’s Ellis Hall. The featured speaker, David

Arbutina, M.D., F.A.C.S., medical director of the

Breast Cancer & Women’s Health Institute in Central

Pennsylvania, discussed The Myths of Breast Cancer.

Dr. Lawrence Wallace opened the Orthopedic Care

Center on Wednesday August 1, and on Thursday,

August 2, Huntingdon resident Beth Crownover was

glad he did! Beth fell in her garden and immediately

knew she seriously injured her ankle. She never

expected what the x-ray showed, though — a serious

trimalleolar ankle fracture.

At our ER, Dr. Wallace was paged, and arrived

within minutes. “I read in the newspaper about Dr.

Wallace coming to J.C. Blair,” Beth said. “I really didn’t

want to go anywhere else. When Dr. Wallace arrived

and introduced himself,

he told me I was his first

patient at J.C. Blair. All I

asked is, ‘Can you fix me?’

He said not to worry: ‘I’m

going to take good care of

you.’ That’s all I needed

to know!”

After ordering a series

of diagnostic tests, his

course of action was clear.

Dr. Wallace performed an

open reduction internal fixation to repair the break.

He placed a plate and screws on the outside of her

ankle and screws on the inside.

“Elizabeth was what I call my first and my worst,”

said Wallace. “Her fracture was almost an open

fracture, but the skin was not broken. It was a

complicated procedure and long healing period for her,

but now, a year later, her ankle is fully functional and

there is minimal scarring. ”

“I try to individualize care for every one of my

patients,” said Dr. Wallace. “They are not just a

knee, or an ankle, or a hip injury. I don’t use a

cookie-cutter approach.”

“we are very excited about working with the hospital and health system board, administration and staff with the goal of bringing more physicians and services back to our community. As we work

through the implementation of the Affordable Care Act, we will focus on our ability to provide the best possible access to quality care right here in our community for the residents of huntingdon County and surrounding communities.”

James W. Mansberger, D.O., Chief of StaffOur First Medical Director

president and Ceo lisa mallon announced the appointment of James B. hayden, m.D., as J.C. Blair’s first medical director in May 2013. As medical director, he works part time as a liaison between the medical staff and the health system’s administration and board. his primary focus is related to clinical quality and the development of a medical care model that will meet the requirements of the Affordable Care Act.

Board certified in family medicine, Dr. Hayden has been on our medical staff since 1986 and will continue to see patients in huntingdon and Cassville. his knowledge concerning the “patient-centered medical home” promoted by the Centers for medicare and medicaid (Cms) is invaluable.

“Dr. hayden is very well-respected by our physicians and will be a tremendous help in developing medical care that truly meets the needs of our community.”

At a community meeting in June, residents

met the physicians and staff of Cassville’s

Trough Creek valley Medical Care Center —

including Dr. James Frommer — and learned

more about available services.

J.C. Blair medical services won the 2012 hCBi 3p evolution Award for reinventing its business and its

mission to stay competitive – a new approach to physician recruitment and retention.

Drs. hayden, long and mosely joined J.C. Blair medical services to establish the huntingdon

When it’s a life-threatening emergency, you need

a hospital close to home. Our Emergency Services

Department is ready to save lives 24 hours a day,

365 days a year. When the unexpected happens — a

heart attack, a vehicle accident, an expectant mother

who goes into labor early — you need highly skilled

medical care right now, right here.

Over 16,000 patients required the skilled staff

of J.C. Blair’s emergency physicians and nurses

this year.

One area of emergency care that benefited from

additional resources this year is severe burn care

with the addition of the Lehigh Valley Health

Network’s TeleBurn system. When a patient with

severe burns arrives at J.C. Blair’s Emergency

Department, doctors have

the ability to send digital

photos of the wounds to

burn specialists at Lehigh

Valley Health Network’s

(LVHN) Regional Burn

Center in Allentown, PA.

As the specialists view

the pictures, they discuss

the best treatment options

with J.C. Blair staff.

Lehigh Valley Regional

Burn Center is the

largest burn center in

Pennsylvania. LVHN’s

TeleBurn program has

expanded to serve 34 facilities and was recognized by

the Computerword Honors Program as a Laureate for

information technology in healthcare.

“As a first-time mother and a high risk obstetrics patient, i was overwhelmed with anxiety and apprehension as my due date quickly approached. the day of delivery, i was told a c-section was our best option. i was so grateful to have Katie shade, Rn, working in maternity. twenty-three years ago, Katie assisted my mother with my own delivery. i felt safe with this knowledgeable, well-versed staff. it was comforting hearing Dr. navarro and the nurses talk as the delivery progressed, but if my anxiety level creeped up, the nurse anesthetist would grab my hand and assure me that i was in the best hands with this team. Finally...the quietest little cry, then Jan edwards, Rn, walked around the draping holding our perfect little 9lb., 9.5 oz. baby boy, Dakota. soon after, recovering in my room, my husband, family and son joined me. Dr. navarro, Dr. lee, the anesthesia team and the nursing staff right here at J.C. Blair, went beyond any expectations i had ever imagined.”

On May 20, 2013, our grandson, Baalan William

Ledford, who was 2 months old, had been lethargic

most of the day. Because he seemed like he had a cold

the previous day, we were not too concerned. By 10 p.m.

my daughter, who is a registered nurse, realized that

we needed to get him to J.C. Blair immediately. The

emergency room was already very busy when we

arrived, but within minutes, a nurse came out and

assessed Baalan, and calmly said that she needed

to take him back to be thoroughly evaluated. We did

not understand the danger our grandson was in.

Back in the emergency room, there were several

people surrounding Baalan. He had quit breathing. It

was then that we realized we could lose our grandson.

In those critical minutes, Dr. Kafle, Dr. Sherchan,

Dr. Roth, Dr. Williams and several nurses all worked

at saving his life. Baalan stopped breathing four

times, and each time the team would kick into action.

Baalan had severe RSV and needed to be life-flighted.

We were devastated emotionally. Dr. Roth walked over

to me, put his hand on my shoulder, looked into my

eyes and told me that Baalan was in good hands and

would make it. I believed him. I will never forget that

moment in my life. The team stood watch by Baalan’s

bedside until the helicopter arrived and took him to

Hershey Children’s Hospital.

His condition was already critical when we left our

house. If we would have had to transport Baalan to

State College, Altoona or Lewistown, he would have quit

breathing en route and passed. I will forever be grateful

to J.C. Blair and its staff for saving Baalan’s life!

From the bottom of our hearts, thank you!

J.C. Blair’s commitment to the Huntingdon County

community stretches beyond the care provided inside

hospital walls. Through clinics, classes, health fairs,

tours, internships, screenings, classes and events, we

strive to improve the health and health awareness of

our community. As a nonprofit health system, we also

fulfill an important mission of providing care to those

in need, regardless of whether our patients can pay

for that care.

Through much of this year, J.C. Blair’s community

relations staff worked with the Huntingdon County

Healthy Communities PartnerSHIP to conduct a

Community Health Needs Assessment (CHNA) for

Huntingdon County. The CHNA is a comprehensive

view of the many indicators that impact the health

of Huntingdon County residents, addressing not only

healthy behaviors and clinical care but also social

and economic factors and the physical environment in

which we live. The overall themes of this assessment

identified the need to focus on health education and

promotion, and on improving access to affordable

healthcare services as priorities. J.C. Blair will

continue to work with its community partners to

implement strategies that address these needs,

tailored to the county’s most vulnerable youth, elderly

and adult populations. The complete report can be

found at www.jcblair.org or by calling J.C. Blair’s

Community Relations office at (814) 643-8833.

The expert team at J.C. Blair’s Cardiac Care Center

diagnoses, evaluates and treats some of the most

critical health issues facing members of our community

— heart and lung disease. We provide the right

doctors, the right diagnostics, the right records and the

right treatment, right here in Huntingdon County.

A primary diagnostic tool for any cardiologist is the

echocardiogram, a sonogram that allows doctors to

see the heart beating and to look at many structures

of the heart. Our Echocardiography Laboratory was

awarded a three-year accreditation by the Intersocietal

Accreditation Commission (IAC). This means that

the program has undergone a thorough review of

its operational and technical components by a panel

of experts and is awarded to those facilities found

to provide quality patient care in compliance with

national standards.

After a patient has had a heart illness or surgery/

procedure, he or she can take part in our Phase II

Cardiac Rehabilitation Program. This medically

monitored exercise program combines physical exercise

with risk factor modification to help patients recover

and strengthen their bodies to prevent future heart

problems.

Nearly 200 patients have graduated from J.C. Blair’s

Cardiac Rehab Program since it re-opened in 2011.

Echocardiography and cardiac rehabilitation are just

two of the many heart and lung services offered by

J.C. Blair’s Cardiopulmonary Department. Others

include: cardiac stress testing, EKG and EEG

testing, sleep testing, pulmonary function testing, and

respiratory therapy.

J.C. Blair also strives to educate the community

about heart disease and what area residents can

do to keep their hearts healthy. “Wear Red Day”

was sponsored by J.C. Blair Women’s Heart Health

Initiative and funded by a grant from Mr. and

Mrs. David Stinebring. Featured speakers were
