Genesis 22:7-8And Isaac said to his father Abraham, “My father!” And he said, “Here I am, my son.” He said, “Behold, the fire and the wood, but where is the lamb for a burnt offering?” 8 Abraham said, “God will provide for himself the lamb for a burnt offering, my son.”

Isaiah 53:4-5Surely he has borne our griefs and carried our sorrows…he was pierced for our transgressions; he was crushed for our iniquities; upon him was the chastisement that brought us peace, and with his wounds we are healed.

Isaiah 53:7He was oppressed, and he was afflicted, yet he opened not his mouth; like a lamb that is led to the slaughter, and like a sheep that before its shearers is silent, so he opened not his mouth.

SimeonSuch a lamb was Christ: he was the Lamb, whom all the others typified. He was truly without spot or blemish; and was offered on the altar of his cross, not merely for the good, but in the stead, of sinners. He was really a propitiatory sacrifice, inasmuch as he bore in his own body the curse due to sin, and expiated all its guilt. As there was no variation of the daily sacrifices, but only a repetition of the same, so his one offering of himself is the sole cause of our acceptance with God: nor need that to be repeated, because the virtue of it extends from the beginning to the end of time

John 10:17-18For this reason the Father loves me, because I lay down my life that I may take it up again. 18 No one takes it from me, but I lay it down of my own accord. I have authority to lay it down, and I have authority to take it up again. This charge I have received from my Father.

HendriksenMale or female, old or young, rich or poor: all are guilty before God, and from them all God gathers his people. Aged men, aged women, young women, younger men, and even slaves should live consecrated lives, for the grace of God has appeared bringing salvation to men of all these various groups or classes.

1 Peter 2:24He himself bore our sins in his body on the tree, that we might die to sin and live to righteousness. By his wounds you have been healed.

Hebrews 9:28…so Christ, having been offered once to bear the sins of many, will appear a second time, not to deal with sin but to save those who are eagerly waiting for him.

MeyerThe Lamb as it had been slain must be beheld both here and hereafter, in this world and in all worlds. Not His character, however fair; not His words, however much light they cast on mysteries of life and death; not His miracles, however strong their testimony to His Divine mission: but His appointment to bear the sin of the world, this is the primary aspect in which we are to behold Him.

HenryGod could have taken away sin, by taking away the sinner, as he took away the sin of the old world; but here is a way of doing away sin, yet sparing the sinner, by making his Son sin, that is, a sin-offering, for us.

MaclarenMy task, and that of all preachers, if we understand it aright, is but to repeat the same message, and to concentrate attention on the same fact – ‘The Lamb of God which taketh away the sin of the world.’ It is the one thing needful for you, dear friend, to believe. It is the truth that we all need most of all. There is no reason for our being gathered together now, except that I may beseech you to behold for yourselves the Lamb of God which takes away the world’s sin.
