“Someone To Love” brings together for the first time the self-portraits taken by Cristina Nunez, enabling her to develop over 25 years her method The Self Portrait Experience®, a process of inner exploration shared with the public. Nuñez believes that “The separation between art and therapy is intolerable” and considers the method as the main part of her artwork.

Cristina Nuñez began taking photographic self-portraits in private in 1988 to overcome self-esteem issues that led her to drug addiction during her teenage. This practice allowed her to shape her own emotions and to reveal her presence to the world. At the same time, through an uncompromising gaze on herself, she created a powerful instrument to project the plasticity of her identity. These images became a form of self-therapy through which Nuñez could gain access to her Higher Self.

“Someone to Love” (1988-2011) consists of 21 large photographs and over a hundred small format images, forming a sort of “lifeline” on the walls of the gallery. The many portraits of the author are combined with some significant images of her ancestors and with the portraits she made of her family, investigating the relationships with them and among them, and showing a constant pursuit of her own roots and identity through the faces and bodies.

Two videos complete the exhibition: Someone to Love, a diaporama with the artist’s voice narrating her story, and Higher Self, a presentation of her neo-humanist philosophy, her innovative approach and her vision of art as a powerful tool for social activism.

THE SELF PORTRAIT EXPERIENCE®A workshop by Cristina NuñezA collaborative self-portrait workshop for the public usually accompanies Cristina Nuñez exhibitions, as The Self Portrait Experience method is a significant part of the author’s artistic philosophy.“Someone To Love” is also the primary source of Nuñez’s method, which is based on the possibility of converting pain into art. Therefore, the exhibition and the workshops can be considered as two sides of the same project.

The images created during the workshops become part of Cristina Nuñez artistic project Higher Self and could be exhibited if the participants agree to publish them.

THE SELF-PORTRAIT EXPERIENCE comes from Nuñez’s personal experience, using the photo self-portrait as self-therapy since 1988, after her troubled adolescence as a heroin addict and a prostitute. The method’s goal is the exploration of one’s own identity and the stimulation of the creative process through a series of exercises and the use of specific artistic criteria for the intuitive perception and choice of the works. Since 2005, Nuñez has divulged her method holding workshops and conferences in prisons, mental health institutions, universities, companies, galleries, museums and photography schools in Italy, Spain, Finland, United States, Canada, Luxemburg and UK.

The works of Higher Self are collaborative self-portraits people take, alone in Cristina Nuñez studio, during the self-portrait workshops.

Participants take a series of images following her guidelines to express their difficult emotions in front of the camera. With The Self-Portrait Experience, anybody can use their own pain –instead of avoiding it- to build an artwork which is useful for mankind and, at the same time, experience the creative process, under the artist’s guidance. Looking at the images and choosing the work of art with the precise criteria proposed by the artist is an intense journey into what Nuñez calls our “cavern”, which always brings unexpected discoveries.

In the self-portrait we are author, subject and spectator. The dynamics of “gazes” between the three roles stimulates our higher self, which expresses itself through the language of art and iconography. The triple role of the self-portraitist intensifies the relationship between the artist and the spectator. It’s as if the artist was saying “This concerns you personally and deeply”.

The self-portrait is the only possible image of the creator of that image, in the precise moment of the creation of the image. It is the portrait of our Creative Self, of our Higher Self.

“We all possess a Higher Self, even those who, because of their ostracism, seem to have forgotten it”

CRISTINA NUÑEZ BIOGRAPHY

Born in Figueras (Spain) in 1962, Cristina Nuñez is a self-taught artist-photographer whose work has been published and exhibited internationally.

Following a troubled adolescence with drugs, Cristina Nuñez has been taking self-portraits since 1988 as a form of self-therapy, to explore her personal and creative identity and to raise her self-esteem, especially in moments of crisis. In 2007 she started to put together her project SOMEONE TO LOVE, her autobiography in self-portraits, family pictures, video and text.

In 2005 Nuñez built THE SELF-PORTRAIT EXPERIENCE®, her own method to expo-re one’s own inner life using the self-portrait, with guidelines for an intuitive percep-tion and choice of the works. Since 2005 Nuñez teaches her self-portrait method in workshops and conferences in galleries, museums, fine art accademies, prisons, men-tal health centers, untiversities.

Her works have been shown at the Rencontres Internationales de la Photographie in Arles, at the Casino of Luxemburg, at the Mois de la Photo in Montreal, at Palazzo Vecchio in Florence, at Palazzo Reale in Milan, at the Centre Nationale de l’Audiovisuel in Luxemburg, at the Museo di Fotografia Contemporanea in Cinisello Balsamo, at The Private Space Gallery and H2O Gallery in Barcelona, at Peri Photographic Centre in Turku and at the Finnish Museum of Photography in Helsinki.
